C1sc0cat··on The public has a right to know how companies that pay no taxes pull it off
Not shure single digit effective is possible nowadays even outside IR35 - and HMRC has unliterally ruled that some professions are in side IR35 eg all it/developer contractors.

Actors, film / tv professionals and lawyers etc are for the large part still treated as "self employed"

C1sc0cat··on The public has a right to know how companies that pay no taxes pull it off
From a national insurance POV I think you meant.

For income tax apart from the £2k(divi) and £500 (savings interest) allowances, it is already on the same basis.

Switching to OMOV One member one Vote for selecting presidential candidates instead of the 18th century open primaries some of which don't even have secret ballots I belive.

That is only signed up and dues paying members of the party vote to select candidates

It would be lower wage support staff probably in in the USA not highly paid SV engineers.

Its the same in the UK where I used to work (British Telecom) criminals used to approach call centre workers to get info.

Maybe you should do what our CCNA instructor did - if you brick one of the routers you have to fix it yourself.

Is it such a terrible "learning" Experience that yanking the power cable out is a bad idea as others have said the pi's should have better power supplies.

C1sc0cat··on The Paranoid Style in American Politics (1964)
I must admit as an outsider I think that might happen.

The GOP needs to do what John Smith, Tony and Gordan did and kick out the entryist faction that is destroying the party but I suspect its to late.

Probably as the pi was designed for 6th formers to use - letting 8-10 year olds lose on them :-)
C1sc0cat··on I Hate Coordinate Systems
I feel seen :-)

In my first job I updated someones (doing a PHD in fluid mixing) Fortran code.

The original software to run an experimental rig just put up a ? prompt and you typed numbers in to drive the experiment.

You had to memorise which number was used for what and at which point you had reached.

I updated it to prompt the user and at every step display what options where available and also allowed you to go back a step.

I even went as far as to use Mixed Case Hollerith segments!

I used to work for BT a while back and on the "Engineering" side there where many problems with the drawings of plant being wrong or lost.

Also workmanager aka workmangler was known for sending linemen (engineers in BT speak) to the wrong place and also sending multiple teams to the same fault

And what proportion of 18/19 year olds goto university?
C1sc0cat··on Ask HN: Jack-of-all-trades of HN, how do you approach job search?
Yeh its a grossly abused term.

What it should be is you can work at /understand all the OSI TCP/IP layer's

Layer 8 and 5 is a bonus - politics if you haven't heard the v old joke

C1sc0cat··on Can too many brainy people be a dangerous thing?
In the UK I think having to many politicians who only have a PPE is a problem
C1sc0cat··on SRE Teams: Hash
cough back in the 80's I was employed by a division of British Telecom explicitly partially as DEV/OP on a billing system as I had SYSAD experience on the platform.

Later on mid 90's the BT World wide intra net was run by a full service team that handled hosting admin and development

C1sc0cat··on SRE Teams: Hash
Is that not a problem with the training / education of entry level.

This was the problem the raspberry pi was designed for GCSE and A Level students to actually get hands on experience, so that when you go to to university you had at least the basics.

Its also contrary to all best parliamentary practice and should be ruled out of order.

C1sc0cat··on Evolving Reddit’s Workforce
That is because of the historic lower status of "engineers" as well you need to compare these salaries to doctors Lawyers.

Or in the UK train drivers ;-)

C1sc0cat··on 30 Lines of Code Blew Up a 27-Ton Generator
And any "engineer" would know you have to back test any simulation - and predicting the exact failure modes is hard.

Having a real world failure under controlled conditions - would show where failure points are and possible fixes.

There's initial results that indicate that its likely - you wont get hard data for another decade plus - but take it from me you don't want to get CKD or similar organ damage.

Yes I suspect some one suggesting to HR that one of the ways to increase diversity and combat institutionalised racism would to be a transparent pay survey might be in trouble.

Some of the longer term effects are scary though - I suspect that younger people might not be so blasé about chronic illness.

At minimum younger people who have had covid are looking at a lot more regular check-ups for the rest of there life.

C1sc0cat··on California appeals court rules Uber, Lyft must reclassify drivers as employees
Why do you think that? its stops states playing beggar my neighbour is one good argument against doing this.
C1sc0cat··on California appeals court rules Uber, Lyft must reclassify drivers as employees
So if a US state did something like Ireland and Holland do and help big companies dodge taxes - you'd be fine with that?

There is a good argument (for the good of the country as a whole) that sales tax should be harmonised.

C1sc0cat··on California appeals court rules Uber, Lyft must reclassify drivers as employees
To be fair only "workers" and employees should be able to vote on employment law then, no students no pensioners.

This is why employment law needs to be take away from the states - have one federally defined set of laws - stops a race to the bottom.
