BulgarianIdiot··on Windows 11 insider preview now shipping with Rust in the kernel
Doors 17 secret club preview now shipping with Mold at the center.
BulgarianIdiot··on Microsoft Freezes Salaries for 2023
It's unclear why you keep explaining how options work. No one said otherwise.

And it's also a fact BOTH options and grants are given to employees, depending.

I didn't use one instead of the other, and frankly the existence of this entire thread is a bizarre amusement to me at this point.

BulgarianIdiot··on Musk says Twitter to soon allow calls, encrypted messaging
Ooh, now isn't your naivety adorable here. Intent and direction is what really matters! Like, say, when you get in a cab, and he's just sitting still, but he really intends to drive, and he's looking longingly in the right direction where you wanna go. Meanwhile the taximeter is counting up... And you missed your flight. But the intent and direction matter.

If "we'll do it eventually" was a legitimate excuse for not shipping, then theft would be legal. You know, "I'll return it eventually." You go to the bank, take a loan and then you never pay back. But not to worry, you intend to pay it. Eventually.

It's like the way Twitter pays rent right now. "I'll pay it, eventually." Oddly, he doesn't mind having an office for free right now, though.

If it's unclear, there's no distinction at all between a scammer and an entrepreneur, except the latter ships when they say, and the former doesn't.

Long term we're all dead. Time matters.

As for me being wrong about zero successes, can you be slightly more specific. What is that "first thing" he promised? The blue checks? The blue checks that helped drive away most advertisers, losing him billions, in order to earn less than 50 mil/year in subscription fees?

That's the "success" you want me to count?

Thanks for the laugh.

With great successes like that, X Corp. will be bankrupt before year's end.

BulgarianIdiot··on New, Simplified Twitter Blue Pricing
What's simplified?
BulgarianIdiot··on Microsoft Freezes Salaries for 2023
Employees get both options and grants, depending on their position and so on. And stock does go up. It's Microsoft. Otherwise you can... just not use the option. The purpose is to encourage employees to help the company and raise the stock. In theory at least.
BulgarianIdiot··on Average Age at Death (U.S.)
I'll just cautiously raise hand and say that how old you die is not necessarily the whole story on the quality of your life, and the state of your community. Of course the difference is still big and worth studying.
BulgarianIdiot··on Microsoft Freezes Salaries for 2023
What's funny about it. Employees also get stock options.
BulgarianIdiot··on Musk says Twitter to soon allow calls, encrypted messaging
When he said he'll put humans on Mars by 2020 that was even more interesting news, what happened, and why are we not learning? You may think that was a long shot, but it doesn't matter if it's a long or short shot with him, he speaks before he even tells his engineers about what they're supposedly to "ship soon".

The list of Twitter features he promised when he bought the company is long and he has zero successes so far.

BulgarianIdiot··on Musk says Twitter to soon allow calls, encrypted messaging
He says a lot of things and never ships. We have to very be stupid to cite his promises as news at this point. Do we never learn? Just to remind you, he "fully expected" to have robotaxies in 2017, and put humans on Mars by 2020. He blocked fast speed train projects and took public money to build a Hyperloop he never built. And so on, the list goes on forever.

In the case of Twitter, he joined in late October last year talking about the "everything app", talking about how soon we'll be able to make payment transactions, monetize ads in replies, see detailed information how and why we're shadowbanned, compete with YouTube, make Twitter an "optimized giant neural network" and, oh, save humanity from the "woke mind virus" because "nothing else matters if this is not solved".

He says literally whatever. What he shipped so far is few underbaked features started before he bought the company, and wrecked the verification system in a failed attempt to monetize Twitter (by reports he lost 89% of ad revenue which was 5 billion a year, to earn about 600k Blue subscribers for revenue of less than 50 million a year, do the math).

Watch what he ships, not what he says.

BulgarianIdiot··on Tucker Carlson bringing show to Twitter
Twitter is least likely to ban him due to the temporary chaos and incompetence of the "leadership". As lawsuits & losses pile, Musk will have to step down and then the "free speech" honeymoon is over. Also, I doubt Twitter has money for Carlson's show, the kind that'd justify him doing it, and paying his staff and himself enough to cover his costs and basic life's needs.
BulgarianIdiot··on Musk's attempt to monetize Twitter has failed
Subtle reminder: he signed the 44B offer while trying to play chicken with the board and extort them into changing Twitter in ways he wanted, but without intending to actually buy it. He later tried to repeatedly get out of the deal, but Twitter had done their homework, so he was forced into it, realizing he'd be out at least a dozen billion for failing to go through (not just the $1B fee everyone is talking about).

The scammer got scammed.

BulgarianIdiot··on Bees on Delta N339NW Wingtip
This story is fucking hilarious, and the ending is hysterical.
BulgarianIdiot··on Proposal for Twitter to move inactive accounts to cold-archive instead of purge
And the funny thing is they indeed sell anything from the offices that's not bolted on couple of months ago.
BulgarianIdiot··on UK at risk of falling behind in global hydrogen race
I've never heard or seen a single reason that explains why hydrogen is a viable direction to go in. Maybe for limited routes for trucks. But those don't need a wide public network of fueling stations.
BulgarianIdiot··on A mutation turned ants into parasites in one generation
You're asking questions which have more to do with our own higher cognition instincts and how our mind factors social behavior, rather than how an ants sees it. So maybe the examples should move towards how society deals with parasites who lack critical social features like empathy, morality, honesty. And if studies are correct, it seems we let them rise to the top.
BulgarianIdiot··on Proposal for Twitter to move inactive accounts to cold-archive instead of purge
You, who wrote this here, spend more time and resources coming up with it, than Elon has time and resources to allocate for implementing it, after firing 90% of the company. It won't happen. He wants to free up space, and sell the names, with minimum effort involved. That's all.

Twitter is being dismantled and sold for parts.

BulgarianIdiot··on We’re purging accounts that have had no activity at all for several years…
I'm almost sure part of Elon's harebrained scheme is to keep the names and sell them. So it'll be interesting if any names actually get freed.
BulgarianIdiot··on People are trying to claim real videos are deepfakes
Where "people" are apparently Elon Musk's lawyers.
BulgarianIdiot··on Geohot raising for tinycorp as an Nvidia competitor
You think "big teams are doomed, small teams are the future" is very kind to engineers who are under constant pressure to justify their existence in an Elonified tech sector?

"See, he fired 90% of the company and Twitter is doing just fine!" (ignoring he can't ship any major feature, and also we have bugs and outages every week). "We should do the same, big teams are doomed, small teams are the future."

Meanwhile, I'm really "being aggressive" by saying "I'd be really happy if we stop propagandazing this tech bro BS [...] and start respecting the work of our colleagues."

I suppose aggression is in the eye of the beholder in this case. Geohot was extremely dismissive and arrogant when he joined Twitter, which prompted me to explore what's his actual background (myths aside) and what I found was a lot of Geohot air and nothing else.

It's always the people who never had to build something significant who always have the most cocky armchair advice for those who do, funny that.

If you're victim of this advice, I urge you that we recall our common sense, instead of propagating this toxicity further.

BulgarianIdiot··on Twitter user growth is higher than ever (2022)
Yup, the Elon circus wore off, so he suspiciously stopped bragging about engagement and daily active users in recent months.
BulgarianIdiot··on Geohot raising for tinycorp as an Nvidia competitor
Geohot has never shipped anything (except two hacks he stole on a forum).

He joined Twitter just few months ago boasting how he can run Twitter with 5 guys and he alone will fix search & UI (he fixed nothing and quit a few weeks later).

So I'd be really happy if we stop propagandizing this tech bro bullshit that suggests everyone in the industry is just twiddling their thumbs all day, and start respecting the work of our colleagues more.

BulgarianIdiot··on DHH: TypeScript sucked out much of the joy I had writing JavaScript

BulgarianIdiot··on Linearly interpolating pixels that are in a gamma encoded color space
I'm frankly curious about the thought train that led you from "Carmack makes a technical post about gamma correction" to "he can't lead in a tech company"
BulgarianIdiot··on Linearly interpolating pixels that are in a gamma encoded color space
Well sure, many were aware of gamma correction, but everyone's so used with how incorrect compositing looks, that it works "fine" in their mind. And being aware of gamma doesn't mean you truly grok the extent of visual corruption that spreads in images while compositing, scaling, editing etc.

I heard explanations how it'd be slow, or doesn't matter, or what am I talking about, all ultimately variations of "works as coded, won't fix".

There are clearly people at Adobe who are aware of the issue in some capacity, and their efforts have weird specifics, such as... they noticed text anti-aliasing looks weird, so they added an Advanced Control called "Blend Text Colors Using Gamma" option in Color Settings. The bizarre thing is that none of this is specific to text. It's just that text has many small complex shape edges, and you notice it more on text (like Carmack noticed it on the star field). They didn't fix vector art rendering, for example. And the option default is not even the correct gamma for a document, but 1.45 which makes no sense at all. They just "eyed it" and went with it.

There's also a Blend RGB Colors Using Gamma option which is disabled by default. If you enable it, it corrects SOME operations, but not others, with no rhyme or reason. However, you can't really tweak those yourself, because if you do, the settings are not saved per document, they're global. So if you tweak them... then ALL Photoshop files you open will look wrong, because they were originally made for another configuration of these settings. Which leaves you with 32-bit color channels. I have Actions that convert an image to 32-bit to scale, and back to 8/16-bit, just so it's gamma corrected.

It's... a f***ing mess.

BulgarianIdiot··on Linearly interpolating pixels that are in a gamma encoded color space
BTW, I was a beta tester of Photoshop at Adobe like 20 years ago and I kept pestering them about it. None of the engineers there, including tenured "fellows" could comprehend the problem. Extremely aggravating.
BulgarianIdiot··on Linearly interpolating pixels that are in a gamma encoded color space
The fact we still have botched gamma compositing and scaling is one of my personal grievances. In 3D graphics people have mostly learned to use linear light space as otherwise lighting is really wrong, the more the simulation resembles how light really works.

But in, say, Photoshop the gamma is still wrong, unless you switch to 32-bit space, which produces huge files and removes access to most filters. You don't need 32-bit precision for proper gamma. You just need gamma correction when combining/interpolating/blending color values. Alas. Ignorance is pervasive.

BulgarianIdiot··on End of Covid-19 as a global health emergency
Did you miss the horrors of the Chinese lockdowns? The Australian "quarantine centers" practices & abuse? What about people in Greece who were banned from leaving their homes or neighborhood? I'm barely scratching the surface, there was so much stupidity in how we handled the pandemic, worldwide.

You're simply ignorant. Very, very, ignorant, and very arrogant which blinds you from your ignorance. That's a classic toxic combo.

For the record, I'm double vaccinated, wore masks before anyone else did, after most everyone else did, and FFP2/N95 respirators at that, not surgical masks, and I obviously avoid tight crowds and wash my hands.

But your attitude is counter-productive and frankly disgusting. Every issue has two sides. A reasonable person is aware of this and plays the uneasy, but necessary balancing game to avoid extremes. You are NOT a reasonable person. You're a loudmouth who thinks they're on a religious mission to shut the mouths of "gaslighters" who do not sufficiently praise authority, which is blameless and infallible. You're part of the problem.

BulgarianIdiot··on For Bluesky to thrive, it needs sex workers and Black Twitter
He absolutely isn't. And we can debate that if there's any confusion how what he's doing is the exactly opposite of what I'm talking about.

I frankly can't comprehend anyone who would see Elon's day to day erratic solo decisions that change the rules on the platform, and compare them to the nature of a standardized, predictable, basically "eternal" protocol like IP is.

Twitter also has no feature to build communities on top of it, who can moderate themselves. It's "flat". I this it has a feature to this effect, something roughly comparable to a "subreddit" would be, but no one is using it and it's clearly underbaked too.

BulgarianIdiot··on End of Covid-19 as a global health emergency
Every time you increase compliance through force, you increase the incidents of abuse and incorrect use of the force. That's not a fallacious or even surprising revelation, and it's not specific to anything in particular about COVID-19.

It can be detrimental overall when the measures to be enforced are mostly security theater, rather than effective. Unfortunately, my observations are that both after 9/11 and during the COVID-19 crisis, force was on the bottom line mostly used to oppress and abuse, less so to decrease risk of terrorist acts and infection respectively.

In a smarter, less corrupted society, where these measures we're trying to enforce are well thought out, tested and effective, the use of force would still be necessary, despite compliance in general would be better due to effective information campaigns. Alas.
