BruiseLee··on Accenture dubs 800k staff 'reinventors' amid shift to AI
My employer wants to rename all software developer positions to "prompt engineers". This is to emphasize our shift to be "AI-first".
BruiseLee··on Tell HN: Cursor charged 19 subscriptions, won't refund
File a dispute with your bank. You did not authorize the charges and you tried working with the business (Cursor) to resolve the issue. Save the emails as the evidence in case your bank needs it.
BruiseLee··on $10k to highest coding challenge score
Does not work for me

  curl -X POST -H 'Authorization: Bearer ***' \
  https://challenge.sphinxhq.com/api/mortys/portal \
  -H 'Content-Type: application/json'
  -d'{"planet": 0, "morty_count": 2}'

  {"error":"planet must be an integer"}
BruiseLee··on The seven second kernel compile
Back in pre-module days, Slackware shipped with "big" kernel with lots of drivers compiled in. The advantage was that this way the kernel could boot on a wide range of hardware. But it was very bloated (for the time) and the users were expected to recompile the kernel with unnecessary drivers removed. I remember compiling it on Pentium 60 with 16MB of RAM. Took 1-2 hours or so.
BruiseLee··on An SF Housing Nonprofit Blew Almost $500K on a Flawed Effort to Tax Amazon
It's just grift. $360k spent on salaries and bonuses goes surprisingly fast.
BruiseLee··on Resolving an unusual WiFi issue
I have a company-issued laptop with some corporate spyware installed. I'm not actually required to use it for development, so I don't use it. But I have to switch it on from time to time or else I get a nice email from IT.

Anyway whenever I switch it on my wifi goes to shit. Apparently it does some SSID scanning every 5 seconds and then keeps sending the scan result to the "mothership". So I switch it on once or twice a week for an hour or so to do its spying thing.

BruiseLee··on Ask HN: What made you feel that coding as a skill can make you achieve feats?
Language: Sinclair Basic + ToBoS compiler. Running on ZX Spectrum clone. I wrote some computational program to help with my dad's research. It was successfully published so this was the first "useful" thing I ever did using my coding skills.

BruiseLee··on Whose breath are you breathing?
6000 ppm is a normal level after 1 hour meeting in a closed conference room. Assuming non-openable windows (which is normal in modern offices).
BruiseLee··on The Worst Perk at Google
Only the ones that use Hadoop cluster.
BruiseLee··on I've locked myself out of my digital life
I lost access to my bank account in UK because my token ran out of battery. The only way to fix this is to fly to London and show up in person. This is a pain because I can't even figure out my account balance - and this is something I must report for U.S. taxes.
BruiseLee··on Your phone may soon replace many of your passwords
Being locked out is an improvement?
BruiseLee··on Ask HN: How to Make 1M $?
Easy. Just make $84k per month. You'll get to 1 mil in about a year.
BruiseLee··on A Small Ode to the CRT
Or Chinese Remainder Theorem
BruiseLee··on Ask HN: What was your best interviewing experience like?
Google (pre-pandemic). Awesome trip to Bay area. Very interesting interview - in a room with a white board covering entire wall. Mostly coding but also talking about algorithms, data structures, and concurrency. Met some great engineers. Unfortunately had to decline the offer due to family matters.
BruiseLee··on Ask HN: Jobs for devs who are slow coders but great at conceptualizing?
Software architect: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Software_architect
BruiseLee··on Ask HN: Why do so many geniuses work for evil companies?
Maybe they are evil geniuses?
BruiseLee··on My dishwasher won’t start until I let it update its firmware over the WiFi
In case of modern appliances, you are not the only customer/user of the product. Other customers are various advertisers that are interested in data about you. The updates provide enhancements for these other customers.
BruiseLee··on “Intel Software Defined Silicon” Coming to Linux
Imagine the possibilities: pricing per core/per billion of instructions executed. Turbo boost add-on package for only $9.99/month. AVX512 free with enterprise subscription or only $29.99/month for individuals.
BruiseLee··on Linux on the Desktop: Part Two
Indeed it does: https://github.com/openSUSE/opi/blob/5fc82de009fb3e792550607...

I'm not sure what this proxy is for though.

BruiseLee··on Ubuntu to Make Firefox Snap Default in 21.10
Forced updates that can be delayed but not disabled.
BruiseLee··on We still believe in private offices (2015)
Right. Anyone passing by can look at employees' monitors. So they feel the pressure to "look busy" at all times - not much difference from open office.
BruiseLee··on IPv4 vs. IPv6 FAQ
Believe it or not this feature is intentional. It is for your privacy so you cannot be tracked by your IP address...
BruiseLee··on The Insecurity Industry
And naturally the ones to decide which software is unsafe will be the lobbyists from the most powerful tech companies like Microsoft or Google.
BruiseLee··on Open offices have driven Panasonic to make horse blinders for humans (2018)
Atlassian by any chance? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8wUOUmeulNs
BruiseLee··on Ask HN: How do you handle SMS and MMS?
You'll need some service provider that will route your messages for you. Twilio is the probably the biggest, but my recommendation would be Telnyx.
BruiseLee··on Copilot regurgitating Quake code, including sweary comments
It's not like decimal or fixed point does not suffer from rounding errors either. In fact for many calculations, binary floating point gives more accurate answers.

In accounting there are specific rules that require decimal system, so one must be very careful with the floating point if it is used.

BruiseLee··on Treasury Calls for Crypto Transfers over $10k to Be Reported to IRS
No, it's worse. FBAR is required if you have $10k in total. If you do, then you have to report all accounts, even the ones that have just one dollar on them.
BruiseLee··on Undefined behavior in C is a reading error
The compiler is allowed to act as if this loop executes exactly 16 times. That means it could unroll and vectorize it for example.
BruiseLee··on Working over 55 hours a week associated with higher risk of stroke, heart attack
Does posting shit on Hacker News during business hours count as work? I guess it does (from health/well-being perspective) because that is also a sedentary activity in front of a computer.
BruiseLee··on Apple is sued for telling you that you're “buying” movies
Actually that is correct in many countries (including US). After a period of inactivity (typically 3-5 years) the bank is required to turn over the money from inactive accounts to the state. This process is called escheatment. I'm not joking.
