Tell that to the Google. Their employees scoffed about working with the Pentagon and dropped the contract, but happily helped China build an authoritarian social-punishment system.

Then denied it ... and then more details kept coming out showing Google continued working on it, just more quietly.

I REMEMBER THOSE! Wow.

Really, that campaign is a great way of showing younger folk just what they're taking for granted, and what used to be thought of as "futuristic", and how close the present matches the predicted future.

BrandonMarc··on As Costs Skyrocket, More U.S. Cities Stop Recycling
Consider also: recycled black plastic is often made from electronic waste, which isn't done very carefully, and so black plastic often has heavy metals from computer components. Problem is, this recycled black plastic is often used for food containers.

What could possibly go wrong?

BrandonMarc··on The money, job, marriage myth: are you happy yet?
I always liked how Dave Ramsey explained it.

* If you're broke and the car breaks down, it's both a car crisis and an extra financial crisis (need money to fix the car).

* If you have enough money saved and the car breaks down, it's merely a car crisis ... and, given that you're capable of fixing the car, it's less of a crisis, at that.

The whole dynamic changes.

Then again, I also remember when they swore they would never create a chat client.

I wonder if the day will come soon when tow trucks feature inverters and outlets as a standard feature, in order to help "gas up" a stranded (electric) motorist.

BrandonMarc··on The Evolution of Reddit’s Architecture (2017)
I think you're looking at the re-design from a user-experience perspective, and this is probably wrong. Think of Reddit as a for-profit company, and then consider what that company might want out of a re-design. They'll talk in public up one side and down the other about making it a friendlier place and easier to use, but ... consider some alternative motives.

What might those be? I suspect some VERY important goals of the re-design are:

INCREASE USER ENGAGEMENT - get users to stay longer, and if they leave, make it less permanent ... tactically:

• all external links open in a new tab now

• infinite-scroll

• simplify subreddit / multireddit management

INCREASE AD VIEWS & AD CLICKS - with users more engaged, monetize their attention:

• make subreddit designs far more uniform, with fewer CSS tricks to really change the layout / experience

• make it difficult / inconsistent (!) to try to do some impressive CSS design, to discourage subreddit managers from taking layout changes beyond a certain threshold

• make the "post" ads just a little less obvious and a little more enticing

• make the "post" ads far more common than before

---

I could be wrong on all these. I suspect I'm right on several.

Indeed.

Tesla has its nay-sayers and financial enemies shorting it, yes, but there is decent reason to wonder if they'll be around 10, 20 years from now. If I buy a Model 3 in 10 years and plan to drive it 10 years, that's a very important consideration.

Good point.

BrandonMarc··on Apple can delete purchased movies from your library without telling you
Which story? I mean, Orwell's 1984 comes to mind frankly, but that's from the mid 20th century, not 10 or 20 years ago.
BrandonMarc··on The United States Is Now the Largest Global Crude Oil Producer
That's what I'm hoping for. You may notice I mention "quality" electric car ... and from what I can see, Tesla is the only producer of quality electric cars, period.
BrandonMarc··on The United States Is Now the Largest Global Crude Oil Producer
For my part, I'm not anxious about range; price is the main issue. The car purchases over my lifetime have been $5000, $2500, $1, $4000, $11000, $8000, $12000 ... and I have never bought new.

I do not see a viable electric vehicle for me. Tesla looks awesome, and I cannot find an affordable one near me. Hell, there are TWO (count 'em, 2) used Model-3's within 20 miles of me, and they're selling for $50,000.

LOL and Model 3 was claimed as the "affordable" one. I make 6 figures, and look at my car-buying habits. * Model-3 is just not in my wheelhouse, and probably won't be for many, many years.

I'd love to buy a quality electric, and I don't see it happening any time soon. Anyway, this is just one more data-point ...

... * and to anyone who suggests I change my habits, I'll reply: 401k is important to me, saving for my first house is important to me, saving for kids' college is important to me, and staying debt-free tops everything (aside from a mortgage someday).

BrandonMarc··on Sheryl Sandberg Misled Congress About Facebook’s Conscience
This is what I wondered when Congress was raking baseball players over the coals for using legal or quasi-legal or illegal steroids / hormones, whatever it was. The congresscritters were indignantly putting on a show trial to humiliate some athletes who, yes, broke the rules ... but all I could think was, "You're an f-ing politician. You preach here about honesty?!"
BrandonMarc··on There Are Whales Alive Today Who Were Born Before Moby Dick Was Written (2013)
... taken over their natural habitats, and then bred them into distorted shapes that would not survive in the wild. Chickens, for example, have been cross-bred so that their breasts are freakishly huge compared to their ancestors ... some chickens have a harder time walking upright due to this. We couldn't send these animals back into the wild because their current genes didn't evolve / adapt in the wild in the first place.

I've read on HN about Facebook doing similar things. They brag up and down about the amazing benefits they give employees, while at the same time moving headcount to contractors who don't get to eat the free food ... literally.

BrandonMarc··on California Moves to Require 100% Clean Electricity by 2045
Those companies donate to political campaigns. Or if they don't, after this threat, they will. Seeing as they are the major polluters, this in the end won't push the needle very much in terms of emissions. Typical.
BrandonMarc··on California Moves to Require 100% Clean Electricity by 2045
Note how it's end-user consumers (and government offices). So it won't hurt CA's business users, cause them to relocate to other states.

As always, devil's in the details. In the meantime, the headline looks impressive, which is frankly all these critters care about.

BrandonMarc··on California Moves to Require 100% Clean Electricity by 2045
Indeed. Don't give me an amazing goal plus a far-off horizon. If you want me to take you seriously, give me a concrete smaller goal and a very soon time-frame.

Instead say, "we will drop it by 10% in 3 years." Now you're telling me some useful truth to which I can hold you accountable (ooh, politicians HATE that). Incidentally, 10% in 3 years would be a perfect milestone to 100% in 30 years, so if these politicians WERE being honest (they're not), then they should have no reason to refuse the 10% in 3 years idea.

BrandonMarc··on California Moves to Require 100% Clean Electricity by 2045
Politicians giving themselves a ~ 30-year runway is a farce. Promise you'll reduce it by 10% in 3 years, and I'll take you seriously.

This is garbage. Just like the return to the Moon promised by Regan, Bush, Clinton, Bush, Obama, Trump ... always "15 to 20 years from now" ... and NEVER happens.

By the way - 10% in 3 years would be a perfect milestone to 100% in 30 years.
