BoxwoodSeed··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
I agree, but then learning to code isn't much of a hurdle. It's a similar effort to learning vim. The difficult part is getting to know the language. I never coded in Haskell for example and learning to use that language would take effort. On the other hand, it would be pretty easy with an LLM at hand.

It might even help in figuring out whether Haskell would be a good fit. Something I couldn't do, as I do not know the language. Then again, it's not a question that really gets asked much in a corporate setting. Most things are just solved in a few popular languages, whether that makes the most sense or not.

I am reminded of the scene of a guy walking through various layers of security to access a computer that isn't connected to any network and still wonder what the hell this guy's job was in Mission Impossible (1996). The data got stolen either way, because of course it did, but what highly sensitive work can you even do on a computer not connected to any network?

If there's too much security in the way, it seems to me that work becomes impossible.

I don't really understand why people insist on treating cheating like something that has to stop. Back in the days before the Internet was a thing, just playing board games, cheating also happened. There are even board games designed around the concept of deception.

Play single player games, then you can complain about cheating AI opponents.

Linux people aren't techbros? What are they called?
BoxwoodSeed··on Newborn girls and boys show different attention patterns within hours of birth
Quite obviously? Male and females are differently wired, so to speak. A Norwegian comedian did an entire documentary about it back in 2010 [1].

SizeUp isn't a tiling window manager as far as a youtube video showcasing it goes and neither is Rectangle. It's more like an alternative to the Windows aero snap thing.

A tiling window manager is a different concept.

BoxwoodSeed··on I said no and Apple said yes
It's alright, but a step down from tiling window managers that you can use on Linux.
BoxwoodSeed··on I said no and Apple said yes
Next time you try Linux on the laptop, go with Void.
BoxwoodSeed··on I said no and Apple said yes
Isn't the only difference that people using servers are expected to have deeper knowledge? As someone using Linux both on servers and on a desktop, I see little difference.

Apple doesn't even have a tiling window manager as far as I know.

BoxwoodSeed··on What happened to the Snowden archive
Based on everything I thus far know about WWII, I do not have the impression that Hitler wanted war [1], nor do I have the impression that their ideology demanded it.

If you also read what they published about themselves, instead of only what others wrote about them, the whole thing becomes a lot more nuanced.

BoxwoodSeed··on No country for mediocre mathematicians
There's also the thing where trade work is in the process of pricing itself out of what normal folks are willing to afford. Combined with Youtube tutorials and AI help that is getting better, it wouldn't surprise me if more and more people would just decide to do all this stuff themselves at a fraction of the cost.
BoxwoodSeed··on A 12TB Steam “teraleak” spills more than a decade of lost PC gaming history
There's not only Mt. Everest. You can also take a stroll to your local hill. Or watch footage of someone else doing the climbing.
BoxwoodSeed··on A 12TB Steam “teraleak” spills more than a decade of lost PC gaming history
Good excuse to become a data hoarder, but bad timing giving the pricing situation.
BoxwoodSeed··on A 12TB Steam “teraleak” spills more than a decade of lost PC gaming history
Imagine if there was a lift to the peak of Mt. Everest. That existing alone would undermine the achievement of having reached said peak.

Also, it's very hard to get multiple difficulty settings right. It's much better to have cheats available to make the experience easier and learn to get better at the game through those.

BoxwoodSeed··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
The default state should be adult. Kid devices should have something special on setup that makes them kid devices.

Or even better, don't have anything like that at all anywhere other than in front of the screen. I really don't see how it is a good thing for a six year old to interact with the Internet in any way.

BoxwoodSeed··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
It won't be only facebook in the long run. Once this works for facebook more and more sites will be pressured to use age verification by law. Once that works well enough it will probably come for all sites, even ones that don't really need it. Take a look at the cookie law and how people handled that to see a recent example.
BoxwoodSeed··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
I disagree. The proper thing is to not have this at all in any shape or form.
BoxwoodSeed··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
There's little use protesting free things. But you can run Linux without systemd entirely. Void is a pretty good experience, for example.
BoxwoodSeed··on California lawmakers unanimously pass Linux exemption from age-verification law
I still think it is a better idea to ban children from the Internet altogether, but without enforcement. Then the parents can decide and if things go south, the parents are to blame and not whoever runs a website.
BoxwoodSeed··on The Internet Is Kind of a Predatory Cesspit Now
I'm using an addon that just changes my unique fingerprint every ten minutes. Not sure if that helps or not.
BoxwoodSeed··on Google will expand age checks on Android worldwide till the end of the year
Linux is also ready to support age verification through systemd. Luckily, there are still distros without it, like Void Linux. I switched to it recently and now my media PC boots faster than my TV takes to turn on.
BoxwoodSeed··on Google will expand age checks on Android worldwide till the end of the year
I'd be totally fine to solve this problem by banning children from the internet altogether. Not that I'd enforce this or anything. Just so no one other than the parents can be liable when things go wrong.

There's more and more evidence that internet access isn't healthy to have for children anyway.

BoxwoodSeed··on Show HN: Vimgolf.ai – Learn Vim by playing through a map of levels
Uses unholy amounts of CPU making my laptop's fans spin out of control. Editing is very slow, too. Not really a good impression of vim. I'm still going to recommend people to use vimtutor to get used to vim.
BoxwoodSeed··on DEF CON bans Meta-style 'pervert glasses'
> people don't like the idea of being filmed in public,

I don't think that this can be the main issue, given how nobody really cares about security cameras in public spaces or all the cameras modern cars can come with, nevermind dash cams.

BoxwoodSeed··on DEF CON bans Meta-style 'pervert glasses'
It's so weird to me how people don't like these kind of glasses. They are basically a dash cam for your entire life. Seems like a pretty valuable thing to have.

The only thing I object to is the facebook association.

BoxwoodSeed··on For most US drivers, EVs offer emissions benefits and cost savings
It is indeed an infrastructure problem, but the infrastructure has to come first.

They provided you with one? My bank made me buy my own device. It's an online bank, so I'm not sure if using the app allows for better tracking than simply using their normal website. So far I haven't been forced to use an app, so I guess not.
BoxwoodSeed··on ECB launches survey on the new euro banknotes
The existing designs are fine, are they not? Even if they only spent a single Euro on all of this, which I doubt, it would still be a wasted Euro.
BoxwoodSeed··on The growing vigilante movement to knock out Flock surveillance cameras
There's a small but important difference between surveillance in certain settings (like a prison) and surveillance around the clock. There's also a difference between keeping records forever and not keeping records at all.

The Panopticon was designed in a way that inmates would not know whether they were watched or not and there was no camera to record everything to be reviewed later by AI agents, either. It also wasn't something that caught on.

Personally, I don't mind surveillance in certain public spaces, as long as the public has access to everything that is recorded in real time and whatever archives are kept. If it's a camera in a public space you'd think it would be better if not everyone had access, then it's probably a camera that it would be better no one had access to.

BoxwoodSeed··on The growing vigilante movement to knock out Flock surveillance cameras
You know how animals in captivity behave differently from animals living in the wild and why this is judged to be a bad thing for the animals? Humans under surveillance also act differently from free humans and it's a bad thing for the same reason.

It is in essence an attack on the human spirit.
