Bishop_··on Valve says Counter-Strike 2 for macOS not happening, there aren't enough players
Valve actually collects really good stats on stuff like this

https://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey/Steam-Hardware-Softw...

Looks like linux barely beats out macos

Bishop_··on Ideas that changed my life
Where are you getting them for free? Every time I tried to download books they end up having a ton of weird errors that make it difficult to read.
Bishop_··on Ask HN: Having trouble getting senior applicants, wondering what to do about it
DevOps isn't exactly an ancient field. I know you said you're already junior heavy but even if building someone up takes you six months you're going to likely be better off in the meantime than trying to find someone able to produce the value you need from day one.

My employer is also having trouble attracting senior frontend devs right now and our take seems to be that there's a lot of competition for good candidates, that's unlikely to change in the short term.

EDIT: Not to doom, but times are changing, might be worth evaluating if you really do NEED a senior. A lot of the way people look at used cars, and housing, (and gas prices), and remote work has changed in the past few years. Maybe easily acquiring senior devs is something that is also changing.

Bishop_··on Forgetting a Child in a Car Is a Horrifying Mistake. Is It a Crime? (2009)
Seems like an opportunity for a carseat product that sends your phone a push notification when you get out of range if it detects a child in the carseat.
Bishop_··on The Unlicense is an inferior license wrapped in an atrocious name
I am largely ignorant to license law so forgive this probably basic question

If the idea of public domain is clearly established in law should it not be enough to have a license file that simply reads.

Everything in this repository is public domain, all contributions to this repository are public domain.

Obviously if someone were to submit code stolen from a project under another license it would create an issue. But the same could be said for any project.

Bishop_··on Ask HN: Great Blogs by Programmers
His series of posts on Another World and its ports are a solid read.
Bishop_··on Show HN: Medusa – Open-source alternative to Shopify
The linkedin and github links in the footer aren't set. Best of luck.
Bishop_··on Take-Two Sues Enthusiasts Behind GTA Fan Projects Re3 and ReVC
Porting the mobile port back to PC is one of my biggest complaints with remasters. Final Fantasy on PC went that route and I would honestly rather pay Square $15 for an emulated version then the releases we got.
Bishop_··on The STEM Crisis Is a Myth (2013)
From the (admittedly small) pool of folks i've talked to. It seems like you leetcode until your eyes bleed and hope you nail the interview.
Bishop_··on Satan should chair your meetings: A literature lover’s guide to office politics
So how do you convince other leadership and the people you lead that this attitude is better? I've had folks on both sides of the fence who feel strongly that hierarchies should be absolute and following top down decisions is more effective.
Bishop_··on Amazon reverses course, expands work-from-home options
Yeah, but your boss being able to do it to you makes him feel important and powerful!
Bishop_··on Companies excluding Coloradans from remote jobs to avoid sharing salary ranges
My current employer migrated from AWS to GCP (Before my employment with them) because they don't like Jeff Bezos, things are sometimes... odd when dealing with very small businesses.
Bishop_··on The World Economy Is Suddenly Running Low on Everything
I'm assuming next time there's so much as a hint of the next pandemic every country will immediately close it's borders to try and get into a New Zealand situation.

Of course, that's assuming the next pandemic isn't in 100 years when we forget everything we learned this time around.

Bishop_··on Best practices for remote software engineering
This (might) help you, It helped me anyways.

Bishop_··on The real reason to end the death penalty
You can let someone go if you found out they were innocent. This is still bad that they serviced time in prison while innocent.

However it is currently impossible to unkill someone, which makes executing someone for a crime they didn't commit significantly worse, this seems a reasonable place to draw a line to me.

Bishop_··on Isamu Akasaki, inventor of first efficient blue LED, has died
Yes, I was getting annoyed by an access point I bought that had blue status lights but amazingly it has a setting that turns them off either always or during specified hours. I'm floored that every device doesn't allow you to disable them.
Bishop_··on Free Software: An idea whose time has passed?
I'm currently imagining a nightmare scenario where those gas station tv ads are playing inside of the car. I sincerely hope that day never comes.
Bishop_··on Microsoft in talks to buy Discord for more than $10B
I would love something like this for wow raiding, sometimes I want to say something thats relevant only to my fellow class/role but the raid leader is saying something important. We ended up just having a teamspeak server running in parallel with discord for my class, which worked but is understandably not optimal.
Bishop_··on Bring Your Own Client
If a terminal is more your style you can even use Spotify-tui[0].

Requires some setup and having an additional client installed for the actual audio playback but it's still interesting using Spotify from a terminal.

Bishop_··on Typing, RSI, and what I do differently
Yup, I have had tendonitis in my forearms since I was 19, hurts pretty much all the time. Still not sure if i'm ever going to get rid of it or if I need to just keep dealing with it.
Bishop_··on Context switching costs more than we give it credit for
I prefer silence also, but even music with lyrics was better than the sales guys cold call pitch, somehow that absolutely SHATTERED my flow state without fail.

Strangely enough I find working in the "white noise" of a coffee shop lets me hit flow state even better than silence. Not sure if thats more due to the "i'm in this place to do the thing" effect or the actual noise though.

Bishop_··on Signal community: Reminder: Please be nice
One of the best parts of OSS is that if the maintainers don't have the time or the priorities to solve your problem you can fix it yourself and get your change upstream, or fork it. It blows my mind that some people can take OSS for granted.
Bishop_··on The Lies that can Undermine Democracy
The source you're citing is citing another source, which is behind a paywall.

I'd like to look at the time series data as well, but it looks like either the "Data Integrity Group" didn't provide or The Epoch Times felt it unnecessary to share the data in the article.

> The Epoch Times was unable to verify the allegation independently.

Bishop_··on Justice Dept files suit against Facebook for discriminating against U.S. workers
I'm making an assumption that facebook only wants to hire what they perceive is the top 1% (Or some other number) of programmers regardless of background.
Bishop_··on Almost 60 percent of business closures are now permanent, new Yelp data shows
I haven't thought about it too deeply, but i'm wondering if theres just an unsolvable gap between "business owners just bury bad reviews" and "irrational customers can sink small business owners."

I'm assuming that manual curation of reviews is necessary here, it may not be.

Bishop_··on Almost 60 percent of business closures are now permanent, new Yelp data shows
Is there a straightforward way to monetize the review business without resorting to what's essentially extortion (BBB, Yelp) or having a feature subsidized by other methods (Google reviews)?
Bishop_··on Crowdsec: A Fail2Ban alternative written in Go
The concept of "herd immunity" far predates COVID-19 and is an accurate enough analogy for what they're trying to accomplish.
Bishop_··on The disruption con: why big tech’s favourite buzzword is nonsense
Do you have a citation for that? That doesn't seem like a good thing long term that 98% of gains are in one "industry"
Bishop_··on Digital banking, now halal
I kind of assumed it was one of those religious rules that might get thumped around a lot by those who are very devout but conveniently ignored by most average folks, like some christians not eating meat on Fridays.

Unfortunate that rules that seemed to have been designed to be fairer to those borrowing ended up making them more expensive.

Bishop_··on Digital banking, now halal
Are you familiar with how muslims in muslim minority countries do banking? Are there sayariah banks / credit unions that I am simply unaware of due to my ignorance? Or do they simply not use banks? Or do most just not care about the rule as I think would be implied by conventional banking being more prevalent even in a country with as many muslims as Indonesia?
