Bilters··on Ask HN: Sites like HN on other topics?
Yeah I would love to get an invite too (if you have another spare one)
Bilters··on Reddit Captures 7% to 16% Less Audience Time During Blackout
I also believe there will be another drop when the apps actually are shut down. Now people are loggin in to get the last details without much hassle. I did this myself, it’s muscle memory to open Apollo and browse it, even with some subreddits closed. When the app are down… there will be the another spike, which Reddit has to overcome. At that moment I will most probably also shut down.
Bilters··on The 'Fuck You' Pattern
Whenever I put a google search down, and see one page of Pinterest on there I immediately go back to the search box and go for; “-site:pinterest.*”. I absolutely hate that site with a passion.
Bilters··on Ask HN: Best non-business books to read on vacation
Some suggstions on my end would be: Ready player one - Ernest Cline Mistborn trilogy - Brandon Sanderson A short history of nearly everything - Bill Bryson Dune - Frank Herbert
Bilters··on Show HN: BeforeShutdown – a macOS menubar todo app with reminders on system off
Yes I do this every day. Just because I'm always working on network drives and if I just close down the lid, the favourites in my Finder will disappear every now and then. When shutting down the laptop completely I eliminate this effect.
Bilters··on Show HN: How good are you at spotting lookalike domains?
I was expecting this to be harder as well. With swapped unicode letters. Maybe you should make them different levels, 1 = easy like you had, 2 = with upside down letters, 3 = greek letter replacement (unicode swapping)
Bilters··on Ask HN: What were your most impactful podcast episodes from 2019?
If you're a history geek you should definitly check out Dan Carlin's Hardcore History. This year he only made 2 episodes. 'Supernova in the east' II & III. At a whopping 4 hours each these feel more like an audiobook crammed with history rather than a Podcast. But I can definitly recommend them both & the complete works of him of course.
Bilters··on Ask HN: What were your most impactful podcast episodes from 2019?
I can second this. Even though I stumbled upon this podcast only 2 weeks ago. Just after the first episode I knew I had to hear more stories, so I started listening these back to back from the start. I can highly recommend this.
Bilters··on Category:Obsolete occupations
Sure; Last year I visited the place, at the cathedral island the lamps are lighted every evening.[1] It's a great sight, the guy walks fast, so if you want to make a beautiful photo you have to be quick. [1] https://www.getyourguide.com/wroclaw-l2036/wroclaw-cathedral...
Bilters··on Category:Obsolete occupations
A lamplighter is still employed by the city of Wroclaw. So the job is not 100% obsolete but rather extremely rare.
Bilters··on Estonia has a new way to stop speeding motorists
I can totally stand behind this idea. It’s way more equal than money. Every single person get 24 hours a day, but not everybody has €200 (or however high the fee may be) free at hand. Although I think there should be still an upper limit. Saying if you speed more than X there’s more consequences involved rather than time and/ or money.
Bilters··on Ask HN: What are weird and/or novel ways to do web UIs?
I would say the website which shows you and tells you what you're doing in the browser; https://clickclickclick.click/
Bilters··on How long would it take to create a Windows 1.0 capable machine from scratch?
Don't really know. But if you decide to do so, please make a video series about it. I really enjoyed the series Ben Eater has produced making his 8 bit computer. [1]

Bilters··on Ask HN: What tools have most helped your day-to-day productivity?
http://bulletjournal.com/get-started/
Bilters··on Show HN: Location History Map Explorer – Gamified fog of war world visualisation
I like the concept of the app! Especially how the fog view looks. However I think $17 is a bit steep for me to download the app.

One question directly arose me; ie I visited a place somewhere in Croatia now, come back to the app in 5 years, but the place in Croatia has been completely reconstructed. Will I see the state of when I was there or will it be the current state?

Bilters··on Kactus: Design version control without changing tools
I’ve seen multiple version control apps pass by in recent years. However they seem to focus too heavy on one particular tool. For me as a designer I’m really looking for a version control system / app which handles multiple files from multiple software applications. On a regular day I use, Photoshop, Illustrator, Indesign, After Effects, Premiere Pro, and some other smaller tools as a base. If there ever could be a (local— because of the large file sizes in video) versioning system which brings them all together that would mean the world. Preferably in a nice gui application. And I know these apps have failed in the past but I think there might just be a market for it. (Instead of versioning it all in the finder / explorer myself)
Bilters··on Self-Crashing Cars
If we’re talking about the self driving cars here like mentioned in the article, the cars could go to a dealer / workshop on their own. You’ll only have to tell the car “I don’t need you for the next x hours”. So you go ahead and have the firmware updated.

Unfortunately there’s no quick fix about the current cars having the “guided” self driving principle.

Bilters··on Font editor FontLab VI is finally released
Looks like a great update! Definitely how they re-worked the bezier approach! There are some innovations here which I would love to see in Adobe Illustrator as well.
Bilters··on Spotify hit with $1.6B copyright lawsuit
Wow this a great explanation! The level of complexity is higher than I thought at first. Thanks for this!
Bilters··on Show HN: The Most Talked about Books on Hacker News, Stack Overflow and Reddit
I've seen a couple of 'most mentioned' pass by in recent years, all seem to have a different algorithm & outcome of all the most mentioned books. If I compare yours to i.e. http://hackernewsbooks.com/ the top mentioned book is vastly different than the one on your site. I mean this is not a problem at all, just found this interesting.
Bilters··on Show HN: A stop-motion video of an engine
Thanks for sharing what you've used to transcribe / subtitle your video's with. I've been looking for a source like this, and sounds like you're happy with their service. I'll give it a go on my next video project.
Bilters··on Ask HN: What are your favorite web front-end ressources?
I didn't know about dev docs, but it looks like a great resource! I've been using Kapeli's Dash for a bit now, but this seems to be a free alternative, thanks!
Bilters··on Show HN: Extremely simple CSS font embedding
Nice tool! Especially with quick testing on fonts like you state in the documentation. But i'm wondering what is your source for the fonts?
Bilters··on Disney to pull movies from Netflix, plans launch of ESPN, Disney streaming
A diversified market for every distributor another platform isn't going to work. I recon people are not willing to take more than 3/5 subscriptions for watching their movies / series. And what if you want to watch that single movie, you need to go and buy that one, or do they offer a platform where you can rent / stream that one movie?
Bilters··on Atom 1.19 – Improved Responsiveness and Memory Usage
This might be an intersting article to read on the side; https://josephg.com/blog/electron-is-flash-for-the-desktop/
Bilters··on Video Wall on the Raspberry Pi: Configure it by taking a picture of your screens
Wow I like the idea; this could wel be elongated to very large scales! Nice work!
Bilters··on Ask HN: How did you find your great side project idea?
I like the simplicity of your app, however I think it lacks some design. Looks like it's pulled straight from a bootstrap kinda thingy, without putting your own 'Riker' sauce over it.
Bilters··on Show HN: 3mail – email newsletter
Could you please be more specific on what we can expect when we do sign up?
Bilters··on Ask HN: Do you keep a developer diary?
I just browsed over their site, and I found it a very interesting concept. Thanks for the tip!
Bilters··on Ask HN: Building a website ok, but a connecting to a CMS?
I'm familiar with Wordpress. I did set it up a couple of times, but I used a theme were i could re-do some colouring, and fonts etc. Now i've got a website, and I would like to add a CMS behind it, It could be Wordpress or another one, but the connection I can't seem to make. Build a website, then connect the HTML / CSS to Wordpress. Do you have any resources where I can look into to start making this connection?

Thanks
