BigTuna··on Flight rules for Git – What to do when things go wrong
If you're using a rebase workflow this is much easier than interactively rebasing when you just want to squash the last N commits:

git reset --soft HEAD~N

This rolls back the history and places all the changes in those commits into staging. Commit with a new final message and off you go.

BigTuna··on North Texas citizens organize to monitor police with video cameras
Watchguard Video, which provides dashcam tech for police departments, is working on a streaming video solution that sends the live video feed back to HQ. I've seen a demo of the system and it's really neat. Cell, WiFi, satellite and a few other receivers are built into one board and firmware dynamically switches the active connection to the device with the strongest signal, ensuring the highest throughput as well as redundancy. It's all locked away in the trunk where it can't be accessed. It won't stop a determined rogue officer but it's a step in the right direction.
BigTuna··on Who smeared Richard Feynman?
It's important to remember that before the days of no-fault divorce false allegations of cruelty were commonly made to justify the split to a judge. Both parties to the divorce would agree on the story in advance and testify to the same under oath. It amounted to widespread ritualized perjury and was one of the major deciding factors in the passing of no-fault statutes.

This is all to say, take the allegations of extreme cruelty with a grain of salt.

BigTuna··on My Conversation with “Eugene Goostman”
"Maybe, let’s talk about something else? What would you like to discuss?"

And that's where it failed my amateur, "BS" test...

BigTuna··on Google Nest
I can see Bee as a real product in some form or fashion in 10-15 years, and I think Bye is a great idea.
BigTuna··on TDD isn't dead just because DHH can't do it
Thanks for this insight. I got the same feeling while reading it and suspected it was the manner of delivery more than the disagreement.
BigTuna··on Ask HN: Is Sublime Text dead?
People complain all the time.
BigTuna··on Norwegian skydiver nearly struck by meteorite
It's extremely hard to discern but it looks like there was possibly another smaller piece that goes flying by just before the camera stabilizes and the main meteor comes into view.
BigTuna··on Using GameStop as a bank
It wasn't banned and it is still quite legal. Overdraft fees are banks' bread and butter. They continue to process withdrawals before deposits and many process them in the order that maximizes overdrafts.

BigTuna··on Ship's cat
Thanks for the Monday smile, submitter.
BigTuna··on A Star in a Bottle
The valuation is so unknown that the project has its own currency: the ITER unit of account. True, that was done because 3 dozen countries with their own (mostly) separate currencies are collaborating on the same project, but it makes for a nice excuse. :)
BigTuna··on U.S. now bugging German ministers in place of Merkel – report
"it's naive to think that anybody really cares about some objective notion of fairness."

It seems that Brazil cared, to the tune of $4.5B in lost sales from an American company due to our eavesdropping.

BigTuna··on Religious are less intelligent according to analysis of studies
There's no such thing as an objective belief. If it can be shown to happen there's no need for belief at all. Invalid assumptions indeed..
BigTuna··on Religious are less intelligent according to analysis of studies
And you know this how?
BigTuna··on Tom Perkins suggested that only taxpayers should have the right to vote
He's convinced the rich are under attack, and when pressed for an example he brings up abstract fears and paranoia. A fine representative of the 1%.
BigTuna··on What U.S. Really Did To Us Iranian developers.
Author seems to be very confused about what democracy is. Misguided as the sanctions are, they weren't established arbitrarily. To wit, if you insist on framing this as America bringing democracy to Iran, then consider it our thank you for the embassy takeover.
BigTuna··on Asusgate: A story about thousands of crimeless victims
"We are sorry for exposing innocents in this manner."

Quit lying you pricks.

BigTuna··on Use SQL subqueries to count distinct 50x faster
I've been rattling my cage about this problem for a few years now. There's room and need for an "ORM/DBA" position in our industry. Most of the common production packages are both complex and flawed enough to justify a full time position, and yet I've seen so many companies lose hours of productivity floor-wide because the dev group's [N]Hibernate knowledge has been pressed beyond its limits.
BigTuna··on What's on my blackboard
Rob Ford OUT OF NOWHERE!
BigTuna··on Mystery Rock 'Appears' in Front of Mars Rover
It's worth noting for the record that the photos were not taken from the same vantage point. The parallax seems to indicate that the camera position was higher in elevation in the second photo. Just something to keep in mind when examining the photos closely for very small differences.
BigTuna··on Bing is blank?
Confirmed.
BigTuna··on Reddit’s science forum banned climate deniers. Why don’t all newspapers?
Really though, what have climate change deniers added to the discussion in the last 5 years? I'm all for entertaining multiple opinions on any topic but I don't think deniers are operating in good faith.
BigTuna··on Show HN: Drink Plan
That's a long drive for a beer.
BigTuna··on ALEC calls for penalties on 'freerider' homeowners who install solar panels
There are few things in life I can count on reliably. ALEC generating terrible model legislation is one of them.
BigTuna··on After traffic stop, man forced to have x-ray, enema, anal probes and colonoscopy
I think it's been well established at this point that anyone can be compelled to do anything by law enforcement. The supposed corrective mechanism comes after the fact so you're helpless in the interim. Take Mr. Eckert's case for example. What would have happened if he had started screaming in the hospital for someone to call the police? My money's on nothing. "Just a mental case, nothing to see here" they might say. You truly have no recourse in the moment.
BigTuna··on Drinkups Are Rape Culture
Rampant, unmitigated BS.
BigTuna··on Ask HN: In one sentence, tell me a random useless fact.
When water converts to steam at 100 degrees Celsius it also expands in volume by 1700%.
BigTuna··on New Dell UltraSharp Monitors
Yes, yes, but does it smell like cat piss?
BigTuna··on NSA infiltrates links to Yahoo, Google data centers worldwide
If people were going to get outraged about that, they would have burned the country to the ground when they learned that several NSA operations were given Civil War battles for codenames. You know, the only war where Americans have ever been our own enemy.
BigTuna··on Tsunami advisory in northern Japan after 7.1 magnitude earthquake off coast
Did you know that we, collectively, as a society, continue to gather new information and make new discoveries even to this day?
