BigTuna··on 50k Boat Names
I've always thought Unsinkable II would be a good boat name
BigTuna··on GitHub Is Experiencing Difficulties
Forgejo seems decent but I've only scratched the surface.
BigTuna··on GitHub Actions and Pages are experiencing degraded availability
It's probably not attributable to AI in the way that you're thinking - Github has been absorbing an exponential increase in usage, and that increase is mostly due to new AI-related projects being created and worked on.

Though I'm sure some of the blame can go to internal slop code.

BigTuna··on W Social, public institutions and the theater of European digital sovereignty
In addition to Eurosky there's also Blacksky, Northsky, and Anisota. Plus dozens of other non-microblogging apps. AT is growing pretty quickly now.
BigTuna··on W Social, public institutions and the theater of European digital sovereignty
An unfortunate step backwards. I'm cheering for Eurosky and open networks.
BigTuna··on Show HN: Gravity – interactive solar-system simulator, from Newton to Einstein
Great job! 14 is misleading though - while the context is one day, the animation depicts axial precession which takes place over ~26,000 years
BigTuna··on Should I run plain Docker Compose in production in 2026?
I reverse proxy everything through a Caddy instance running on the same machine so I avoid the firewall dance entirely by just prefixing all my port assignments in the compose file with the loopback IP (eg. 127.0.0.1:3000:3000). Nftables denies all but 80 and 443 and I don't have to worry about restarts/flushes breaking things.
BigTuna··on GameStop makes $55.5B takeover offer for eBay
1980s even. It takes a while to siphon off all the value built up by multiple generations.
BigTuna··on GameStop makes $55.5B takeover offer for eBay
Welcome to late stage capitalism
BigTuna··on Open Social
There are already working alternate implementations of every protocol component.
BigTuna··on The future is not self-hosted, but self-sovereign
And fwiw Bluesky DIDs are currently still centralized in plc.directory but work is being done to decentralize them.
BigTuna··on Why does FM sound better than AM?
>We WANT to know that there's a collision in transmission so that we know we need to retransmit

Digital trunked public safety systems solved this problem decades ago. If you key up when the frequency is in use you get a distinct rejected tone. I'd think prevention is far preferable to sorting it out once everyone's finished walking on each other.

BigTuna··on Ask HN: Node vs. .NET Core (2024 edition)
This is an absurd generalization
BigTuna··on Ask HN: What 1980s/90s-era shareware did you purchase?
I was too poor, but I did belatedly donate to the maker of Trumpet Winsock thanks to this HN thread: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2282875
BigTuna··on Email addresses are not good 'permanent' identifiers for accounts
>just not for their own workers

The shoemaker's children always go barefoot

BigTuna··on Astronomers detect almost 100 new extremely metal-poor galaxies
Just think of the billions of planets out there that have never heard Black Sabbath
BigTuna··on My Fediverse use – I'm hosting everything myself – PeerTube, Mastodon and Lemmy
If pixelfed and mastodon are federated with each other, you should be able to view users and posts from both sites on either site - no need to sign up for both.
BigTuna··on Bluesky migrates to single-tenant SQLite
It's all your posts and replies as a user. While they currently host the only* PDS themselves, the end goal is for every end user to have their own PDS. Inrupt/SOLID calls this concept a "pod".

*(actually they just onboarded a second production PDS yesterday.. progress!)

BigTuna··on Build your own BitTorrent
I think it's breaking some other things as well

[stage-1] Expected "\"orange\"\n" as stdout, got: "Hello World 2!\n"

BigTuna··on Love after life: Richard Feynman's letter to his departed wife (2017)
This was probably 20 years ago now but I don't think it was a formal paper
BigTuna··on Love after life: Richard Feynman's letter to his departed wife (2017)
A long time *ago I read re: Feynman's divorce that false accusations of abuse were common back then because no-fault divorce didn't exist. Couples that wanted a divorce would have to concoct a story in order to get a judge to sign off. I don't have strong feelings either way because it's impossible to know what really happened between them, but I found it an interesting counterpoint.
BigTuna··on A Love Letter to Geocities Sites
Any old heads remember using HoTMetaL to write HTML? It was literally just a glorified text editor that inserted tags for you. I eventually learned HTML well enough from it that it became faster to just write pages in Notepad.
BigTuna··on Vintage radio broadcasting equipment
I'm currently working on getting a retired Broadcast Electronics 2100C cart machine from my old college radio station and as I expected the parts appear to be very hard to come by. If anyone has a suggestion/lead I'd be grateful.
BigTuna··on Software is eating the car
I don't mind complexity but what I can't stand is having to access that complexity through touchscreens. Without the tactile feedback of a knob or button I have to take my attention off the road to see where I need to press on the screen. That's a major step backwards in auto safety, IMO.

And don't get me started on the lazy manufacturer design trend of bolting a tablet to the dashboard and calling it a day.

BigTuna··on Couple arrested after feds trace their IPs as having accessed Silk Road
Somewhat misleading headline. The IP trace led them to the couple but old fashioned techniques like surveillance provided the evidence to actually make an arrest.
BigTuna··on Android Lollipop update causes problems
I have a 2012 Nexus 7 and I'm wary of people saying they didn't have performance problems until Lollipop. If I was using it for much more than an e-reader the lag would have forced me to upgrade a year ago. I don't question the other issues reported but I haven't experienced any of them. The only thing I don't like so far is the combined notification bar that requires two swipes to reach the menu that used to only require one.
BigTuna··on Woz’s take on the Apple 1’s noisy -5 volt supply
When you read responses like this it's impossible not to be in awe of the guy. He's a great role model for newer generations both in his passion for his work and his top-notch personality.
BigTuna··on Our Invisible Rich
1. Presidents don't raise taxes. 2. There are far more loopholes and exemptions than there were in Reagan's first term.
BigTuna··on Researcher shows that black holes do not exist
Alternative theories are fine but this doesn't explain any of the observations that have led us to believe black holes exist in the first place. If black holes don't exist, what exactly is Saggitarius A* then? The stars at the center of our galaxy are orbiting something invisible and truly massive (about 4 million solar masses.)
BigTuna··on Steve Ballmer steps down as board member at Microsoft
This post is just phenomenal with the cloud to butt extension.
