Beached··on A Raspberry Pi 5 is better than two Pi 4S
I'm confused. a rpi is comes already constructed? they are single board computers. all you have to do is plug in a power cord?
Beached··on How BlackBerry failed to respond to the iPhone
I find dictation slower than typing. the number of mistakes it makes means I essentially have to delete half of the message and retype it manually. which takes longer than typing in the first place
Beached··on Raspberry Pi 5
I use it professionally all the time. I work with arm a lot, and during the testing of customer software that is compiled for arm, I need an arm based Linux os to run and test on. rpi is the obvious choice. I'm very happy with the 4s performance, so I don't require the 5, but I'll still get one.

I also use another one for retro pi, which I imagine will benefit from the increased performance..

lastly, I have a small handheld Bluetooth keyboard with a track pad I use with a pi4 with a 3.5in screen hat and battery pack. the overall size and weight is much less than any laptop I have ever come across, and I use this when I go to cons. (although I'm looking at plantecom to replace this)

Beached··on Apple exec Eddy Cue set to testify in Google trial about $19B search deal
a large number of people will just assume Apple now recommends Bing over Google for better search results, and leave it as Bing. in Apple we trust is the way a lot of Apple users operate
Beached··on What was behind Microsoft's layoffs of over 20k people in the last year?
I mean Apple laid off recruiters and heavily slowed down hiring fall 2022, tried to force everyone back into offices and was.able to reap many resignations, and still laid off an undisclosed amount of working in the spring.

it sounds like Apple did the same crap, just with better pr and more strategically.

Beached··on Caesars Entertainment Pays $15M Ransom to Cyber-Hackers After Breach
if only they invested any of that money into decent security instead of lobbying...
Beached··on RabbitMQ vs. Kafka – An Architect’s Dilemma (Part 1)
1) some designs can't tolerate the producer sending messages at such a delay. 3) s3 is not cheap storage, it is significantly higher cost than most on prem solutions when talking about large scale storage. (pedabytes scale)
Beached··on FindMyCat – Open-Source Pet Tracker
in rural America, airtags don't work.well. I live kn acreage, and so do all my neighbors. the odds that out cat is within Bluetooth range is slim.
Beached··on Repeat after me: building any new homes reduces housing costs for all
there is a surprisingly low volume of land free from zoning. most America want to.live in urban areas, which are loaded with stupid zoning laws
Beached··on Repeat after me: building any new homes reduces housing costs for all
why not? if my home value falls, presumably the one I'm going to move into fell as well.
Beached··on Repeat after me: building any new homes reduces housing costs for all
more housing does decrease prices. the price went up, but not as much as it would have. for us to see a.price decrease, we would have to see new buildings out pace new people to the area for a sustained period of time. and what is more likely to happen is that they won't decrease but stay flat.

staying flat is still a price decrease each year it does it.

Beached··on NASA's Oxygen-Generating Experiment Moxie Completes Mars Mission
sure in comparison, but we have the existing technology, and capability to lay out 100 football fields of solar on Mars if we wanted to, today. it may cost a metric ton, but we.could do it.

we straight up don't have the ability to build a big surface buclear reactor on Mars. we probably could develop that capability, but until then, it isn't stupid to brute force a large solar installation until something better comes along.

solar likely would be used along side things like kilo power and maybe traditional generators slightly modified until that day comes. it's not stupid do do inefficient thing now, when you don't have a real alternative.

Beached··on FAA closes SpaceX Starship mishap investigation
what is more likely to happen is that they have 15x Launches for one mission, due to all the refueling needs. all these launches happen in rapid iteration from one to 3 pads over 1, 2 or 3 days. the. everything sits silent for a few weeks to a month. repeat 10 to 20 times a year.
Beached··on FTC judge decides Intuit’s ‘free’ TurboTax ads misled consumers
how would you handle the large number of deductions and credits everyone files for yearly? does the fed know of o bought a solar generator and plan on taking a credit? do they know if I had my windows replaced and plan on a deduction? do they know how many square feet my at home office is, or how much I spent in supplies? do they know if I plan on taking the general deduction or itemizing?
Beached··on FTC judge decides Intuit’s ‘free’ TurboTax ads misled consumers
after getting owned by intuits bs 2 years in a row, I went to an accountant. $70/y, he does EVRYYHING, no gotyas or bs. I walk in or drop off all the papers he needs, he asks me a bunch of questions, files everything, I leave with all my federal, state, and local taxes filed. he guarantees a backup, I get a envelope with everything in it labels nicely, and if I ever get audited, he guarantees that he will handle all of the audit procedures as part of the cost, no extra cost.

that type of easy service and peace of mind is just toooo good for only $70. blows my mind that everyone doesn't do it.

Beached··on Zinc-air batteries as an alternative to lithium-ion: study
yup. lfp can cycle every day for over 12 years and still retain 80% capacity. there are a number of home battery vendors doing 5 year 5000 cycle/80% capacity warranties for their LFP batteries already on the market.
Beached··on Texas just got closer to blackouts than it has since 2021. What happened?
I feel like TX is doing more to push for energy independence than any other single organization in the country. the grid incompetence, and governments unwillingness to resolve, is the best driver for household battery and solar I can this of.

I don't live in TX, but if I didn't have 1day battery storage, coupled with solar capability to charge that battery to full in a single day, with a generator as backup, every ounce of effort would be going to that.

Beached··on The era of “free” returns is coming to an end at Amazon and other retailers
as one of those people, it sticks to drove 30m one way to get to a ups store. I already avoid Amazon because returning items is such a hassle, and about 1/3 items has to be returned because damage, false advertising (getting a product other than what was listed/depicted), or wrong measurements listed on product description or any of the other many issues. most products people won't do pickup at my house already, ups stores are a pain. I hate the whole Amazon return ecosystem.
Beached··on Tax prep companies: $90M lobbying against free tax-filing
how do does the federal government calculate all your deductions? do they have every transaction you make every year on file?
Beached··on Tax prep companies: $90M lobbying against free tax-filing
not sure what TurboTax charges, but I pay $70 for fed , state, and local prep and filing.
Beached··on Tax prep companies: $90M lobbying against free tax-filing
you do not have to pay. you can do it for free by yourself. there is just a lot of papers, and the language used is confusing to people and they choose to get assistance.
Beached··on I raced a homing pigeon against the Internet [video]
it's not commercially available yet, but I imagine 5d storage would be best data density.
Beached··on If you make less than $55K, the Labor Department wants you to get overtime pay
why not a multiple of the poverty line. there is already a mechanism in place to have this updated annually and accounta for inflation.
Beached··on Verizon, AT&T and T-Mobile want to access your bank account
I have had the exact opposite experience. googlefi was terrible coverage and more expensive than t-mobile. I switched from Google fi to Verizon, 2 years of Verizon was HORRIBLE, the. I switched to att for 2 years, then I just switched to t-mobile this spring and it's been sunshine and roses. costs me less each month, unlimited everything, and the best coverage of any cell carrier to date.
Beached··on Amazon to Impose 2% Fee on Third-Party Sellers Who Ship Products Themselves
I exclusively shop using the prime label. even then, I still never get my stuff on time and half of it is junk / not what I bought. I think MAYBE 1/5 packages come within 2 days. it's also frustrating because Amazons estimated delivery is always 2 days, and some times it arrives on day 3 or day 4 or day 5, and they never tell me or update the estimated date. when I buy 200$ worth of stuff, I want to make sure it isn't out in the rain and sun getting destroyed, but they can't even tell me when it arrives.

I expect this change will only make it worse.

Beached··on Mortgage rates soar to their highest level in 21 years
I don't see it. I looked into moving this year, house prices have stayed flat in my area and haven't gone down. rates are double my current, and house prices are huge. a move for me would mean nearly 30% increase in monthly payments for a comparable home in a comparable location. we opted not to move and will try again in a few years
Beached··on Desktop Linux has a Firefox problem
I use kubuntu as my daily driver for work for a little over 2 years now. I still run into daily issues that just make me not want to use it for my personal desktop os.

I fret Everytime I update, yet I must update due to work. but I have to schedule and plan those updates so that when the whole thing takes a shit, I can spend 2 or 3 hours fixing it. Just using the built in update utility, or apt upgrade, or really anything runs about a 10-20% chance of shit breaking. (I didn't do the math)

audio experience is terrible all around, and Bluetooth and wifi use out the box, is meh at best for range and stability.

I've tried a dozen distros to see if the grass is greener somewhere else, it isn't, and I have to work, I don't have an hour every day to fiddle, I have to bill clients.

good support is almost non existent, IF you get help, it's from some greater than thou righteous asshole who suggests you just rewrite the drivers yourself and create a pull request.

while I agree it is close, there is a still a LOT of 'polish' that needs to come where I will feel confident that hitting update doesn't ruin my day, and that when I'm done with a stress filled day of work, I'll be able to boot up and play my games without having to troubleshoot for an hour first.

Beached··on How real is America’s chipmaking renaissance?
wish for and expect are two different things. I wish the war in Ukraine would end tomorrow, I don't expect it will though.

while China invading Taiwan is not a guarantee, it is certainly highly probable. this risk should be taken into account by the us government

Beached··on AWS to begin charging for public IPv4 addresses
you don't have to break even on implementation. you will get billed every single year, so if you can have two dudes solve this in 3 months, you can break even in 3 years and every year after that you saved money
Beached··on AWS to begin charging for public IPv4 addresses
because they don't have to be. when you own 20% of the entire Internet, you can just do whatever you want, very few can compete
