Beached··on New FCC Broadband Standards Should Consider Latency
websites loaded faster in 1999 than they do today. web devs increasingly suck at their job and we end up loading half the internet every time I want to read a news article.

internet became fast, but instead of faster load times, we got animated UIs.

hyperbole obviously, but not entirely wrong.

Beached··on New FCC Broadband Standards Should Consider Latency
am I the only person who sees this as a webdev problem and not ISP problem? I don't want my website to recursively load the entire freaking internet with Russian nesting doll dependency loading.

when did we stop caring about optimization and good technical design?

Beached··on New FCC Broadband Standards Should Consider Latency
someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe these mini brown outs you are talking about are officially called Jitter and are measurable.

Jitter is a big issue for IP based telecommunications and was a bigger concern than Mbps when I was implementing them in the past.

Beached··on Threads.net is the new app.net but with ads and interoperable
I think they do if it means more, and more reliable funding. see patreon and in video ad content. artists and creators are already having to fund directly,
Beached··on High school student allegedly uses device to turn off nearby iPhones
fully hackable. they give you for shell access over USB, and it has exposed io ports for custom accessories. they encourage you to play around with the firmware and expand its capabilities how're you want, it is part of the product design and intention
Beached··on US utility firms offer builders cash/trips to fit new homes with gas appliances
my has stove gets WAAAY hotter then my mother's electric range. both faster to temp and overall heat. mothers stove is 4 years old, mine is 6.
Beached··on The housing shortage is larger than you think
yeah, this isn't caused by qealth inequality. it is a separate issue, but not in housing g shortage. housing isn't a fixed sum game in usa, we have plenty of space and materials to build. the issue is that we do not allow for building to be built in the right locations in the right volume. zoning and local laws are the reason.
Beached··on Beeper Mini is back
let's be honest. it isn't for security. security is just the hand they wave to prevent people from tapping their walled garden.
Beached··on Flatpack field hospitals that can be airdropped to disaster zones
significant difference between the quality and stability of the two tents. the one in the article looks like a stick will tear it asunder.
Beached··on Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?
I'm surprised more content creators do not upload their content to other platforms. the video is already made. is yt really the ONLY monetizing platform outthere?
Beached··on Does uBlock Origin bypass the latest YouTube anti-adblock script?
I still won't pay because I consider YouTube predatory with their ads. they are not a company focused on providing a service and making a reasonable profit on top. their ad policies are about maximum extraction from the platform, couple with aggressive behavior towards content creators that make the platform. I used to be fine with the ads, but they got greedy and ratcheted it up way to much. now I block them all or don't use the service. yt could have had my ad views, but they demanded too much.
Beached··on An Open Letter to the Python Software Foundation
this was my first reaction. how fast they came to a consensus, it was the organizers fault for applying so late, it the boards fault for approving in only 3 months. 1 year prior to the con is more what I would expect.
Beached··on Swedish dockworkers are refusing to unload Teslas at ports in broad boycott move
hardly call it stealing. they decided to no longer work for the previously agreed upon compensation package. the employer found new employees that would do the work they need done.

no one stole anything. I agree and encourage unions and collective bargaining, but a strike breaker is hardly a thief, they are just a worker who needs money like the guy striking

Beached··on Mom and pop shops are cutting software spending, creating jitters on Wall Street
55 persons using an e3 license would be 15k/y. 55 would definitely fall into my definition of small business
Beached··on Heat pumps can't take the cold? Nordics debunk the myth
a lot of heat pumps in usa are air to air and have an electric heater in the heat pump to generate the heate when temperatures get so cold that air to air is not effective. without a geothermal system to extract the heat from, they get very expensive to run in very cold Temps when compared to gas hearing. Hensel why the myth that they don't work. no one thinks they don't work, they just think it's a worse solution than natural gas.
Beached··on After decades of dreams, a commercial spaceplane is almost ready to fly
slylon could facilitate airline like service to Leo. sure it is a lot of fuel, but not stacking required and smooth runway takeoff and landings. for human transport to Leo, a skylon like ship would likely be a more familiar service, and easier logistics for fast turn arounda
Beached··on Killing Windows 10 in 2025 could turn PCs into eWaste
I was able to skip Vista by going strait from xp to 7. I fear I won't be able to skip 11, and I worry about that. Linux has been so close to being a daily driver for years now, but the polish is just not there to be a computer I use when I don't want to constantly troubleshoot.

sileh sigh

Beached··on Samsung and other manufacturers disable phones bought on gray markets

Beached··on A Dutch graphic artist reconstructed Tenochtitlan in 3D
please do, this is great and it would be a shame to lose all this initial hard work
Beached··on A Dutch graphic artist reconstructed Tenochtitlan in 3D
yet? if you still have the files, would you consider turning this into a VR experience and add in street level detail slowly over time?

if that sounds like way too much work, any chance you would open source your work for needs to add to it?

Beached··on Detroit wants to be the first big American city to tax land value
you can use equivalents in the are. burned out abandoned building on the lot? what could that lot be worth reasonably? oh, there are 9 houses down the street or 1 block over that are all worth 200k...
Beached··on Automakers Have Big Hopes for EVs; Buyers Aren't Cooperating
the dealers in my area had evs I could test drive, but they were test drive vehicles only. you couldn't buy them, you had to order if you liked and wait for your specific one to come
Beached··on Automakers Have Big Hopes for EVs; Buyers Aren't Cooperating
I can't afford one. I looked in 2019, the cheapest out the door price I could find was 35000. I bought an Elantra 2018 for 17500 out the door.

I'll check again when the 10 year warranty is up and this car has run its life.

Beached··on Oil sector is lobbying for inefficient hydrogen cars to delay electrification
in their current format no. but I think there is sufficient demand for long range personal vehicles, and as the world gets more electric, battery tech will get better. I can easily see a future where 1000 mile range on a single charge will be a norm. and I can easily see an America that requires that. range anxiety will decrease as charging gets faster and easier to access. but I just can't see an America household going 2x electric vehicles until 1000mile range with a charge up time of an hour or two is the norm.

I'm actually a huge fan of full ev hybrids that have on board gasoline generators

Beached··on Medieval staircases were not built going clockwise for the defender's advantage
plate armor makes you wider. weight and movement don't matter if you are too wide to walk up the stairs. I too have been jn these stairs, and wearing a t-shirt as a 5'8" male, I have about 2 to 4 inches of clearance. I would imagine a fully armored person taking up that small amount of empty space easily.
Beached··on A Raspberry Pi 5 is better than two Pi 4S
I'm confused. a rpi is comes already constructed? they are single board computers. all you have to do is plug in a power cord?
Beached··on How BlackBerry failed to respond to the iPhone
I find dictation slower than typing. the number of mistakes it makes means I essentially have to delete half of the message and retype it manually. which takes longer than typing in the first place
Beached··on Raspberry Pi 5
I use it professionally all the time. I work with arm a lot, and during the testing of customer software that is compiled for arm, I need an arm based Linux os to run and test on. rpi is the obvious choice. I'm very happy with the 4s performance, so I don't require the 5, but I'll still get one.

I also use another one for retro pi, which I imagine will benefit from the increased performance..

lastly, I have a small handheld Bluetooth keyboard with a track pad I use with a pi4 with a 3.5in screen hat and battery pack. the overall size and weight is much less than any laptop I have ever come across, and I use this when I go to cons. (although I'm looking at plantecom to replace this)
