AzzyHN··on I decided to pay off a school’s lunch debt
Cruelty is the point sometimes as well
AzzyHN··on Why Archers Didn't Volley Fire
As an untrained soldier myself, I can attest that I would freak out if I saw a whole bunch of arrows flying in my general direction, and probably change my course entirely.
AzzyHN··on Evidence of controversial Planet 9 uncovered in sky surveys taken 23 years apart
Most readers probably know Pluto is the... well... it's not the farthest dwarf planet. But they know it's far, but don't realize just how far it is. I certainly didn't until I watched a video about it.

700 further from the Sun than Earth is tangible as "really really far" though.

AzzyHN··on The US has approved CRISPR pigs for food
This has the potential to be really cool, and really beneficial to society.

It's a shame the people who want to do this the most are the people who want to treat the pigs the worst, and who care the least about potential side effects in humans.

AzzyHN··on Ask HN: Why do people buy Nvidia RTX 5090 at x2 the MSRP?
It's the best. For people who want the absolute best, they're willing to pay whatever it takes.
AzzyHN··on This 'College Protester' Isn't Real. It's an AI-Powered Undercover Bot for Cops
The constitution prohibits search without a warrant, and cruel and unusual punishment, but here we are.

What's "legal" doesn't really matter.

AzzyHN··on Harvard's response to federal government letter demanding changes
My father works for a big pharma company, which means they have to listen to the federal government or risk being shut down by the FDA (which would be easy for Trump to do).

He uses this an excuse for the company's complacency, and by extension, his own. I'm glad to see some institutions take a stand.

AzzyHN··on Waltz's team set up at least 20 Signal group chats for crises across the world
Trump has maintained he has the power to declassify things with his mind alone, so I'm sure this is entirely true. Whatever they were talking about, bam, it's no longer classified.

At least they're using Signal, I guess. Can you imagine if this leaked and they were using something like Telegram!?

AzzyHN··on Honey has now lost 4M Chrome users after shady tactics were revealed
Do you have a source for that? I assume they just sold browsing data, since that's the easiest way to make money in this sort of space (or, I guess, used it to better figure out what kind of credit card you'd consider applying for?)
AzzyHN··on Honey has now lost 4M Chrome users after shady tactics were revealed
I figured it just made money by tracking and selling your browsing history, it's owned by PayPal after all. I was shocked to learn about the cookie-stuffing. That's like, arguably a crime.
AzzyHN··on Samsung CEO Jong-hee Han has died
Guess he made his choice
AzzyHN··on DNA evidence says first Americans came from Asia
Even in more modern times, the details of how a population of people came to be can get lost.

For instance, nobody actually knew where the Romani people actually came from until the 1800s or so, and even then, the theory of a migration out of India (specifically, the Punjab region) couldn't be proven until the advent of modern DNA science.

AzzyHN··on Claude can now search the web
They never watched Avenger's 2
AzzyHN··on A Letter to the American People
I gotta say, "we want our government workers to hate going to work" is NOT a good way to run a country...
AzzyHN··on How to gain code execution on hundreds of millions of people and popular apps
You're still doing better than many larger teams handling larger projects :D
AzzyHN··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
Hacker News is a small subsection of the internet. I think the majority of people, probably 90% or more, simply do not care that much.
AzzyHN··on DA, sheriff, who shared woman's nude photos on phone are covered by QI
They'll murder you in cold blood, and get away with it. They'll move to another county and get a raise.

They'll steal your possessions and drain your bank account, and get away with it.

They'll share your nude photos and get away with it.

Thin blue line or whatever though.

AzzyHN··on Hard disk fraud: long runtimes on new Seagate hard disks
My uBlock Origin has blocked 64% of the page so far, and I've read two paragraphs.
AzzyHN··on Bypassing disk encryption on systems with automatic TPM2 unlock
I believe with software-based encryption (LUKS and the like), the decryption key ends up being stored in RAM, which will always present a risk.

And TPM-based solutions don't have this problem. Could be wrong though.

AzzyHN··on US Supreme Court curbed public scrutiny as it boosted security before Roe ruling
I mean, yeah. They knew they were about to make a ruling that was unpopular with the masses.

The Supreme Court only exists because of America's love affair with British common law. It's a relic of a bygone era, like the drinking age being 21.

AzzyHN··on Ask HN: How do you backup your Android?
Contacts, SMS messages, that sort of thing. Some people are also really particular about all their settings and widgets and such.
AzzyHN··on Ask HN: How do you backup your Android?
Things I cannot (easily) replace, such as contacts and photos, I keep with Google (this will change once I run out of free space, most likely). For passwords, I use Bitwarden.

Everything else is either account-based, or can backed up using Seedvault (a backup solution integrated into AOSP, and therefore present in GrapheneOS)

AzzyHN··on Duolicious – Open-source dating app
Wow, I expected a lot more men
AzzyHN··on A mole infiltrated the highest ranks of American militias
A large part of the FBI's job is to shut these militias down. You can't grow a resistance movement without making some noise, and the US government is obviously very keen on maintaining the status quo.

Examples from the past are easy to come by (COINTELPRO), but a recent example would be the failed 2020 kidnapping plot of Gretchen Whitmer, the Governor of Michigan at the time.

Thirteen arrests were announced, and the FBI has admitted to using three informants and two special agents. The defense argued that there were at least twelve.

Using the official number as a conservative guess, that's still 5 feds for 13 arrests (a 38% ratio!)

Now imagine if instead of 13 dudes trying to kidnap a governor, it was a local militia trying to arm and train hundreds or thousands of people. The full power of the US government to crush opposition is terrifying.

AzzyHN··on VW breach exposes location of 800k electric vehicles
I'll be holding on to my dumb 2012 civic for as long as I can
AzzyHN··on 87.4% of population experienced a decline in freedom from 2020 to 2022
Ah, the American burger institute strikes again.
AzzyHN··on macOS menu bar app that shows how full the ISS urine tank is in real time

AzzyHN··on Firefox releases tab groups for nightly
I could've sworn Firefox already had tab groups, though I may be thinking of container tabs...
