AzN1337c0d3r··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
No he's right, it renders to a 2x resolution off screen with hidpi assets (2x resolution icons, double-size text, etc) and then does downsampling back to your screen resolution 2560x1600 for 13 inches, 2880x1800 for 15 inch, 3072x1092 for 16-inch MBPs.
AzN1337c0d3r··on My MacBook Pro had over 10k USD in repairs
I had a 2016 that got the keyboard replaced 7 times before they upgraded me to a 2017 on which I replaced the keyboard 5 more times before I gave up and sold it.

Each time they replaced the top-case which includes the entire battery assembly, touchbar, speakers. Valued at $800 just for the parts each time. That's $9600 for everyone keeping score.

I called Apple's bluff on saying their keyboards are reliable.

Because many program "unnecessarily" allocate a lot of virtual memory and then never actually page it in, disabling overcommit will start killing processes due to lack of memory even though most of the memory isn't been actually used.

Rich people will just pay this fee and keep texting.

Anecdotally, I noticed that all my friends who can't stay off the phone when they are driving are all heavy social media users, so I think the social shaming method will work well: The car takes a picture of them texting and driving and posts it to all their social media accounts.

AzN1337c0d3r··on Why tests are fine when wet, not DRY (don't repeat yourself)
> Dry tests use a lot of helper methods and those are a layer of indirection.

This is exactly my point, you reduce noise.

> To understand a dry test, you have to also understand the helper methods, and whatever helpers they all call.

To understand your TEST SUITE, you understand all the helpers exactly once with DRY tests.

AzN1337c0d3r··on Why tests are fine when wet, not DRY (don't repeat yourself)
I mean he's basically advocating to use your best judgement but I find far too often test that is too WET (Wantonly Expanded Test).

Test that are DRY increases the confidence that the test tests the correct things by holding everything else constant.

When the tests break, no one wants to scroll through 500 lines of test code looking at every detail to find out what "variant" the test is and if the problem is in the test because of a fatfinger, or the problem is in the code being tested.

AzN1337c0d3r··on Solved by 1440p HiDPI: MacBook Pro 16“ is hot and noisy with an external monitor
Yes, but it is not correct to claim Macbook Pros are Iris Pros. They are Intel graphics.

Intel GPUs (including the UHD Graphics 630) can be used with external monitors. HP, Dell, Lenovo, Acer etc all do it.

In fact, in 2013-2015, Macbook Pros were available with ONLY Intel graphics, and supported external monitors.

The reason why you cannot do it with dual-GPU Macbook Pros is that Apple has their own display muxing solution that requires the discrete GPU to be powered up to use external monitors (presumably the ports are attached to the discrete GPU).

AzN1337c0d3r··on Solved by 1440p HiDPI: MacBook Pro 16“ is hot and noisy with an external monitor
Intel stopped offering Iris Pro after Skylake.

The last Macbook Pro with Iris Pro graphics is the Mid-2015 15-inch Macbook Pro.

The Mac in the article in particular is a 2019 16-inch model.

AzN1337c0d3r··on Sony discontinues its last DSLRs
> that will never be as perfect as an optical viewfinder,

Don't forget that EVF can surpass OVF in image quality because they can apply lens correction to the viewed image which brings the image closer to the final product. (although AFAIK it's not done currently)

AzN1337c0d3r··on Sony discontinues its last DSLRs
Not sure what camera you use, but in Canon's terminology you can turn off exposure simulation which will make the image through the EVF look like a correctly exposed image with ISO cranked way up but you can set your shot ISO as low as you want.
AzN1337c0d3r··on Sony discontinues its last DSLRs
> such as optical quality

Huh? EVF and OVF have their own advantages but it is not correct to say optical quality of one is better than the other.

EVF can do things such as boost the exposure which makes things like the 800mm f/11 possible. This would be much too dark otherwise on an OVF.

EVF can also electronically correct the image for certain types of abberations that the lens introduce.

EVFs also don't introduce their own abberations that OVFs do because there isn't as much glass or mirrors to move the image from the lens to the viewer.

OVF certainly have advantage from being a "live" image for tracking purposes but EVFs have mostly caught up enough to make that difference negligible.

AzN1337c0d3r··on Ask HN: Why is the Linux community struggling to implement hibernation?
The reason is that Dell replaced S3 sleep with Modern Standby.

AzN1337c0d3r··on Women Die More from Heart Attacks Than Men Unless ER Doc Is Female (2018)
From TFA:

> The researchers divided 500,000-plus cases into four categories: male doctors treating men; male doctors treating women; female doctors treating men; and female doctors treating women. “All of those are statistically indistinguishable except for male doctor–female patient,” says Brad Greenwood, an author on the study and a data scientist at the University of Minnesota. If a heart attack patient is a woman and her emergency physician is a man, he says, her risk of death suddenly rises by about 12 percent.

AzN1337c0d3r··on You Were Duped into Saying Yes. Is That Still Consent?
Because fraud is misrepresentation of information.

Consent is something you give (regardless of information is factually correct or not).

There should be punishment for consent acquired through fraud, but it is not equivalent to acquiring something without consent.

AzN1337c0d3r··on You Were Duped into Saying Yes. Is That Still Consent?
No, they consented at that moment with the available information they had.

The fact that the information turned out to be false doesn't invalidate the consent they gave. It's just turns out that consent was acquired via fraud.

Consent cannot be retroactively revoked.

To give an analogy, if I consented to buy a car that advertised 40 mpg but it turns out that it only makes 37 mpg does that mean I was robbed and that I did not consent to buy the car?

No, it means I consented to buy a car that fraudulently misstated its fuel efficiency claims. There should be punishment for such fraudulent claims, but it should not be equated to robbery.

AzN1337c0d3r··on You Were Duped into Saying Yes. Is That Still Consent?
I define rape as when one party does not consent at the time of the act to sex. You can't retroactively remove consent.

Fraud is a completely different matter.

And I have the complete opposite experience. Pinning this on the switch from LPDDR3 to DDR4 seems like a very weak conclusion. Especially when it is known that processors and displays are the largest consumers of energy and the 2019 MacBook Pro boosts way higher with more cores than the 2017.
