Auracle··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
It's literally generalized intelligence. Yeah, I had a shitty chessboard back in the 90's that was specifically programmed to play chess. That same board couldn't tell me the best medication to use to treat a certain condition or how best to modify a model in Blender.
Auracle··on Why I'm still bearish on LLMs after Navier-Stokes
The fact that they can play chess at all despite having no specific training for it blows my mind, and the fact it doesn’t do the same for many others shows just how far they’ve come and how fast.

I just saw a Twitter thread of someone calling out realtors with absolutely egregious editing examples. Think pools and landscaping being added to backyards, a background being changed to a mountainous region, and furniture being “staged” in an attic space that definitely couldn’t fit that furniture.

A realtor in the comments said they legally need to also post the same images but unedited, but I’m sure when you’re doing this the first 50 are the edited ones and the last 50 are the unedited. How many people make it to the unedited?

Auracle··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
I don't know why people seem to think the US has "no societal safety nets."

We have medicaid, unemployment benefits, how expensive our housing is completely depends on location just like other places (rural-ish areas are probably cheaper than almost all of Europe), etc.

Auracle··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
The vast majority of the homeless you see on the streets in the US are there no because of money trouble, but because of mental health or drug issues (or both).

People with money issues can almost always lean on friends or family. It’s the people that no longer have any friends or family willing to put up with them that end up on the streets.

I think the reason why it shouldn't be claimed as a moral good is pretty obvious - authors deserve to get paid for their work. I certainly can't claim I stand on a bedrock of morality as I've used it from time to time, but even though I don't have the money that a lot of HN commenters do I make sure to not use it for small-time authors. Even really successful authors I'll only use it about 50% of the time.

If you want information to be free? Great. But most of those authors wouldn't be putting the work in to making that information/literature in the first place if they know they aren't going to get paid.

I’m sorry, but if I’m giving someone who is - at best - an acquaintance of mine $50 a month out of the goodness of my heart and then one day decide to stop, that’s not a broken promise. If that acquaintance got angry at me about stopping I’d get pretty upset back.

I really don’t understand what link you think there is between USAID spending being cut and inflation. Gas prices are obviously Iran. Everything else started years ago.

Auracle··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
In my locale urgent care is only open from like 9am-4pm on weekdays, reduced hours on Saturdays, and closed on Sundays.

I could make observations about who tends to be there at either but that might rustle some jimmies.

Auracle··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
For those that have never looked it up, the median RN salary in the US is about $100k a year. Germany and the UK are more like $60k.

It’s funny, because it’s a career that feels both overpaid and underpaid to me. I went to a college where almost half of the students were going for nursing - and you certainly don’t need to be especially intelligent.

At least to an outsider, some nursing fields seem damned easy. The nurse that sees me before my GP? Pretty easy job.

Other specialties? Like the nurses that needed to clean up my wife after she massively bled during/after a c-section and they had to give her medications that also caused all sorts of other fluids to intermingle with the blood? Or the nurses that had to stand there for 10 minutes squeezing our infant daughter’s heel in the NICU to try to get enough blood out while she screamed as hard as a little baby can?

$100k doesn’t seem like enough. Odd occupation. For $60k I’d rather work at Costco, that’s for certain.

Sure, but shouldn’t the programs to run the LLMs go “the user has this much vram and the model is this size, so I’ll start with sensible defaults based on that”?

You could override, obviously.

Auracle··on To recruit teachers, school districts are building homes
That’s funny, at least in my neck of the woods a lot of teachers prefer the rural jobs.

I’m not sure if the pay increase of moving the city balances out anyways with the increase in housing costs.

Auracle··on To recruit teachers, school districts are building homes
There are plenty of places without zoning issues that have that same housing problems.

More people. Same amount of land, and features people want to live by - cities (which in the past often meant rivers but always meant jobs)/in my area, lakes. It’s really that simple. Everything else is missing for forest for the trees.

Auracle··on Tom Stanton's supersonic trebuchet breaks sound barrier with gravity alone
Could it be built using medieval (or earlier) technology? One wouldn’t be worth anything on a battlefield but a few hundred of them would be interesting. I don’t know if steel that a blacksmith makes would be uniform or strong enough for that spinning arm though.

I suppose the string is even worse, though.

I believe there’s a laser surgery to break up the big ones that’s would have far less adverse side effects (though, I suppose maybe the chance of something even worse).

Auracle··on SpaceX bond worth 10% less than issue price – heading for junk bond status
Sure, but I wasn’t talking about car sales. I brought Ford up because of the first mass-affordable car and the production line stuff, not to compare sales measures.

Musk doesn’t just have Tesla. SpaceX is probably a bigger deal for humanity and how we live. Starlink was probably only possible because of SpaceX. We’ll see how some of his other ideas pan out. Ford was, as far as I know, just cars (and manufacturing said cars).

Auracle··on US House of Representatives takes step to make daylight saving time permanent
It matches our circadian rhythms better. That leads to absolutely massive better health outcomes, society-wide.

People wanting to drive home with a bit of light doesn’t really offset everyone’s sleep getting screwed up, especially those with later natural circadian rhythms.

Auracle··on US House of Representatives takes step to make daylight saving time permanent
In the northern states, sure. But now you’re expanding it to southern states and places on the edge of the transition zones.

Also, 2 hour late starts for cold are a fairly common thing to happen due to cold in northern states. Now you’re talking about 3 hour late starts.

Auracle··on US House of Representatives takes step to make daylight saving time permanent
For night owls and teenagers, who already have a hard time in society, Daylight Saving Time makes things far worse. It’s been tried and failed, already, primarily due to school/kids issues. The sun will rise really, really late in the dead of winter in some places. Sleep experts are all pretty much in agreement that permanent Standard Time is better.

I’d be all for permanent Standard Time but there’s no way that’ll happen with the old people in charge of our government. Most of them probably wake up at 4am already.

Auracle··on SpaceX bond worth 10% less than issue price – heading for junk bond status
I’m not who you replied to but that’s honestly an interesting question. Genghis Khan? Jesus, I suppose?

Elon Musk is probably up there, though. You could say people like Henry Ford are on his level, but Elon is certainly more broad in his scope. I think people like them are probably accelerationists, meaning someone else would have done what they’ve done eventually. That could be a long eventually though. It’s hard to compare them to people who shaped history through their actions that nobody else would have done the same way.

Political driven stupidity.
Auracle··on Amazon without the knockoffs
To you, that's expanding the scope. To many, many people that's just the way we live, the way our parents lived, etc. We eat food from a restaurant maybe...twice a month? Usually fast food because we're out and about.

If you have the money and you can stay healthy eating that way, go for it. But your original comment seems absolutely ridiculous to anyone that regularly cooks. I sincerely don't mean this in a mean way, but it was quite ignorant, as if making burritos was some herculean task and just what are you going to do with all of the staples foods that can be used in so many other recipes that you don't use?

Auracle··on Amazon without the knockoffs
Well, you also don't have to freeze anything. When you cook almost every meal, you end up using most ingredients before they go bad. The ingredients for a burrito are pretty basic and can be used to make all sorts of things.
Auracle··on Amazon without the knockoffs
> And most of these supplies and prep are going to last what, ~4 days before they spoil?

Rice lasts a very long time. Tortillas last a long time in the fridge (you can probably freeze them?). Freeze the meat. Beans last forever. Sour cream and cheese last a long time in the fridge and you'll certainly use them for other things.

Guacamole/avocados/other veggies are potentially harder to deal with for long term storage, but that depends and it looks like there are some options. Salsa also keeps for many, many months.

As far as time goes, if you're single, many of the ingredients could be cooked in a batch and then frozen, even as whole burritos.

Voluntary donations are practically impossible. Sure, you get the odd straggler, but it’s so, so rare.

I have the most popular NSFW LoRA (actually a LoKR but whatever) for at least one major text to image model on CivitAI.

Once it blew up I made a Patreon, maybe 6 months ago? I get $50 a month from it. I doubt that even covers my electricity costs for training.

Podcasts and videos do have the advantage of being able to ask for people to donate with every podcast/video, but people just aren’t inclined to give their money away when they don’t have to. It’s a rare trait.
