AtHeartEngineer··on Black Sky satellites return images just 58 hours after launch
It's not about how fast you can task a satellite and get data back that the article is talking about.

It's taking about between when the satellite was launched, and when it was able to send images back down was 58 hours. That is impressive. In the past it would normally take a week or more to get a satellite into a stable orbit and do all the checkout tests. After that, sure, task away and get all the images you want.

AtHeartEngineer··on A crash course on hacking satellites
To get started hacking satellites, you've got to communicate with them first

Targeting the $10-15 price range per month for the lower tiers is ideal. This would basically sit just under adobe's costs, but there wouldn't be the time investment of learning their tools, and the user doesn't need a beefy computer. There's also a good possibility that a small chunk of potential customers may only be using a phone.

This comment should be removed, doesn't add anything to the conversation and is speculative at best.
AtHeartEngineer··on The Age of Mass Surveillance Will Not Last Forever
I think the average American cares some, they just aren't aware of what they can do and aren't aware of the extent surveillance is happening.
AtHeartEngineer··on Deepfake used to attack activist couple shows new disinformation frontier
Deep fakes are going to start becoming part of our news, our entertainment, and our justice systems. "Fake news" a few years ago was just cherry picked data and skewed graphs, now the probability of any piece of media being completely fabricated is within a range to consciously consider.

AtHeartEngineer··on Teleport 4.3: Modern Replacement for OpenSSH
Just my opinion, our dev/admin tools need to be a little friendlier. There are too many people that are turned off from learning Linux, programming, or anything deeper than using an app, because there can be so many headaches. There will also people that dive deep into the kernel, but Ive wasted a lot of my time over the years doing something someone else could have done if there was just a web portal, GUI, or hell even decent documentation.

We need more people that are computer literate, and making the learning curve a little friendlier helps with that. It's not like there's a petition to get rid of SSH.

Cool thanks. I might have to start from scratch just because of the underlying mechanisms that I'd want in it. The premise is to use microtransactions for posting/comments, mixed with a bit of the patreon model, to reward good posts and have a barrier to entry for reposts/trolling.

This should really be a tradition that all natural born Americans should have when they turn 18 also. I'm not necessarily about nationalism, that road can go down some dark paths, but it is really comforting to know you are a part of something bigger

I do too; I've had this conversation a few times. Happiness isn't my highest priority, it's up there, but there's a lot of trade temporary happiness for, such as health or sanity.

That information may be used to assist in the theft of research down the line by someone else. Someone else could know exactly where someone's office is and what to grab out of there. Or what labs to try to get jobs/internships/etc in to be closer to a lab they want access to that they likely wouldn't get a job in.

AtHeartEngineer··on We can no longer ignore the potential of psychedelic drugs to treat depression
The best way I can describe it is, before you experience anything like that, you are only aware of the normal/sober extents that your mind uses, and afterwards you realize that most the dials/knobs/gradients/ups/downs you've experienced are only within a small threshold of what your brain is capable of. Experiencing that allows you to have a better understanding of where your thoughts/emotions/experience fall on those spectrums the rest of your life. It puts the range you normally operate into perspective.

Think of it as a kind of messy recalibration, a jostle of the box of your mind. Jostling your box occasionally can help you sometimes break through a local optima to a more global optima, shaking the fuck out of your brain all the time, well, it'll probably make you creative but no guarantees anyone else will understand you.

AtHeartEngineer··on Ideas That Changed My Life
You have to add energy to make it messy as well
