AnotherDesigner··on Brendan Eich Steps Down as Mozilla CEO
What we've learned today:

Most commenters on Hacker News don't know what freedom of speech is. They also don't understand, or maybe don't care, about the responsibility of society to protect minority groups. They also haven't read the bible or understand any of the history behind religion-based attacks on gay rights. I had no idea we had so many Fox News viewers here.

AnotherDesigner··on Journal pulls paper due to “legal context” created by climate contrarians
I'd love to see a study on privilege and libertarianism because that would explains the views of so many on Hacker News. If your field of study is computer science, you don't get to tell climate scientists that have extensively studied something that they're wrong because it might inconvenience your lifestyle.
AnotherDesigner··on Git Integration
Adobe Brackets, an actual free open-source editor, along with Brackets-Git (https://github.com/zaggino/brackets-git) does much of the same.
AnotherDesigner··on Support an open source animation feature film made with Blender
These open movies are great technical demos for Blender but I haven't been impressed with the writing. The stories have been flat, emotionless, poorly paced and lacking in any kind of mass appeal. I'd love to see Blender put out a movie with the depth and complexity of a Pixar film using open-source software. They need a message and a story, something brave and ambitious. So far, it seems like the stories have been written to demo features they're working on. It's really a waste of the amazing talent they have working on these films and the abilities of this software to be used for storytelling.
AnotherDesigner··on North Dakota oil boom: American Dream on ice
I lived close to that area for a while and know people that have moved to North Dakota to work. They're coming right out of high school and immediately making tons of money. A lot of it is wasted on motorcycles, TVs, trucks, alcohol and drugs. The work itself can be very hard, taking a toll on even the youngest and strongest of them. It's put a strain on a lot of marriages as husbands have moved away to work leaving their wives and children behind in communities that can provide decent homes, schools and safety.

It's a difficult situation for me because I know a lot of people that rely on this work to support themselves and their families. Without oil, gas and coal many of these communities would collapse. At the same time, I know the effect this has on the environment and I support us moving towards cleaner, renewable energy sources. I don't have a solution for any of this, just a lot of empathy for everyone involved.

AnotherDesigner··on Crytek jumps on Steam Machine hype train, announces Linux support
If enough large games were released for OS X, even as a port, Apple may put a little more effort in. And yes, the graphics cards are weak (mine is an Intel HD 4000.) But look at the Mac Pro. They invested a ton on engineering it for performance, including a lot of effort on the cooling. Apple can do it, they just need a little push. And now is a great time for it, they have no place else to go. They can't keep marketing the CPU speed or how thin the machines are for much longer. They need a new metric to push and gaming performance would be a great one.
AnotherDesigner··on Crytek jumps on Steam Machine hype train, announces Linux support
That's great news but I'd love some Mac support too.
AnotherDesigner··on Why ‘Cosmos’ Host Neil deGrasse Tyson Has the World in His Hands
I love how arrogant writers think that if you want GMO labeling suddenly you're anti-science or a nut-job. Personally, I'd like the entire food chain carefully documented and put online so data could be gathered, trends could be established and science can be done.

A lot of things that have been considered safe for generations we now understand to have harmful effects on the population or segments of it. As we begin to engineer our food, instead of just growing it, we should take extra care to understand the effects of what we're doing. We should also give people the choice to opt-out of this big experiment by letting people know what's in their food and letting them have the option to decide if they want to consume it.

I've been on the internet long enough to understand the arguments for GMOs, I just think people should know where their food comes from and what's in it.

AnotherDesigner··on Codekit 2 is out
I bought CodeKit 1 a while ago and about a week later he announced he had been working on CodeKit 2. Basically, my purchase was immediately abandonware. He's released no new features and very few updates (just library updates) since then. When I contacted him he wrote a short message back saying there will be no free upgrades to CodeKit 2. Stuff like this just teaches me not to trust these companies, I'm always going to get screwed. So, instead of investing myself to configure CodeKit and make it a part of my development pipeline, I moved over to Grunt. I didn't get to use CodeKit 1 on a single project because I knew it was already abandoned. It took me an hour or so to optimize my grunt file and get used to it but it's all been for the best. Grunt won't abandon me or gouge me for more money. I've also been using Adobe Brackets (and playing with GitHub Atom) a lot lately and it will probably soon replace the expensive Coda 2 that Panic never updates. I've never really been a huge open-source guy but the actions of Mac developers are pushing me that way.
AnotherDesigner··on [dead]
It's strange that Adobe Brackets is open-source but GitHub Atom is closed. I would have guessed the opposite, based on the companies that made them.
AnotherDesigner··on What every founder should know about designers
This is just an ad for scoutzie. I've never heard of them and I'm sure the "top designers from around the world" haven't either.
AnotherDesigner··on Barnes and Noble Laid Off Its Nook Hardware Engineering Staff
A good example of this behavior recently has been Walmarts big push on groceries. I saw it first hand when they did it in a small community I lived in. I also worked at Walmart as one of my first jobs so I had an inside look at things including their anti-union programs and pricing strategies.

Google "Walmart predatory pricing", it's a well-documented issue.

AnotherDesigner··on Barnes and Noble Laid Off Its Nook Hardware Engineering Staff
I really don't trust Amazon having a monopoly on any market especially one I care about as much as books. While they still have competition, things seem to be going in their favor. Even more so after the justice department handed them control over the market again when they complained about Apple. Amazon is taking the Walmart strategy: push your competitors out with unsustainable pricing and then take over the market and charge whatever you want when they're all gone.
AnotherDesigner··on Brackets, a code editor
I really like Brackets. And it's got some great plugins already. I've set mine up with a visual git sidebar, markdown preview, themes and a mini-map like Sublime Text has.
AnotherDesigner··on 67 Signals hasn't changed a thing
Really? I haven't used Basecamp in years (I work alone most of the time) but last time I did it seemed well thought out and stable.

I have read "Getting Real" and have seen a number of their articles they've posted on customer service and taking care of their employees over the years. What have your experiences been?

AnotherDesigner··on 67 Signals hasn't changed a thing
That's not funny or educational or even interesting. It looks like jealousy or unfounded hate. I can't really think of anything 37signals has done to warrant this. They make good products and treat both their employees and customers well. Am I missing something?
AnotherDesigner··on Nokia posts disappointing Lumia sales
I like the design language Microsoft came up with for Windows Phone. So I bought a Nokia Lumia phone. I quickly regretted it. This was before Windows Phone 8 was released but we were promised "many of the features" with Windows Phone 7.8. I waited, and waited, and waited. Eventually I was told that they had changed their minds and Windows Phone 7.8 wouldn't even be coming to my particular phone.

Windows Phone 7 is missing a lot of very basic features. It's time consuming and frustrating using it even for the most basic tasks. The web browser is terrible. It lacks most popular 3rd-party services and apps. And the camera seems to be programmed to take out-of-focus photos.

I will never buy another Nokia phone, or Windows Phone, again. They had their chance.

Concrete-jungle.org is just awesome. Just saw it on your profile. Really cool idea.
AnotherDesigner··on Georgia Tech: Startup Semester
As a designer living and working in Atlanta I often forget how much engineering talent we have locally. I've been to the Georgia Tech campus for a few events and was impressed with many of the students (and former students) I've met. I look forward to seeing my city develop its own technology culture and companies. Maybe someday I'll find the right people here and help make something myself. For now, it's all client work.

AnotherDesigner··on Don't Support Information Architects
I doubt somebody that gets upset about a small company protecting their idea with a patent (that he hasn't even seen) would actually buy software from them anyway.

His example ("prior art") wasn't remotely relevant.

So many upset about something you have no information on. But go ahead, grab your pitchforks and go hurt another small developer.

AnotherDesigner··on Who's Selling Credit Cards From Target
I'm confused, are you implying it's not okay for these criminals to be brought to justice, in accordance with various international laws, when their parent state acts belligerent and refuses to cooperate? These people hurt others for a living. They deserve punishment.

The nuclear apologists are out in full force today.

I love how you guys, mostly computer programmers, are so much more informed than experts in nearly every other field of science existing. It must be amazing to be that smart.

AnotherDesigner··on Our holiday visit to the Apple store
The guide, as well as this stunt, is laughable. The comparisons aren't even close to being the same value. And I wonder if Apple could sue the FSF for outright lying: nothing about the Macbook Pro is planned obsolescence. You can use it until the parts wear out. For me, my HDD died and it had been about 7 years so I decided to buy a faster model instead of replacing the HDD but it worked the same up until the end.

AnotherDesigner··on The Day Google Had to 'Start Over' on Android
> instead of seemingly believing that every feature Apple has ever added was brought down on chiseled stone tablets received on Mount Sinai :)

My impression of Apple has changed dramatically in the past few years. I think a lot of it started with the iPad. I waited years for Apple to release a modern touchscreen computer. As a designer, I basically wanted a portable Wacom Cintiq so I could bring the Adobe Creative Suite with me and work anywhere. When Apple finally announced the iPad, based on iOS instead of OS X, it changed my opinion of them. Don't get me wrong, I like the iPad. I use it to browse the web, check e-mail and other basic tasks. But the iPad wasn't what Apple users had been asking for. We had been asking for what turned out to be the Microsoft Surface. And I'd own the Surface (Pro) today if it weren't for my annoyances with Windows 8.

AnotherDesigner··on The Day Google Had to 'Start Over' on Android
As someone that has a lot of Apple products I'm glad they have competition. I don't think any one company should have a monopoly on the modern touchscreen smartphone concept. That being said I wish more Android fans would accept that Google directly copied a lot of ideas from their competition. And that's okay. It would be one thing if Android looked like a direct copy of iOS but it doesn't. It just uses the same technologies. On the other hand, when unscrupulous companies like Samsung try to capitalize on Apples success by directly copying the product they should be slapped down and reminded to do their own thing. It's all about balancing the rights of innovators and the protections for consumers.
AnotherDesigner··on Thrun pivots Udacity toward vocational education
Isn't this just them trying to monetize online classes? I've read a few other articles that covered this topic and it seemed he was pivoting away from "education should be free" to wanting paid offerings. I know he has, along with others, complained about the limited number of people completing courses or passing them. I just feel like that's an excuse. I looked over a number over courses but didn't complete them because they were boring, lacked necessary prerequisites or had a poor user experience. I think it's a little early for giving up and I hope something takes free online education seriously enough to solve the problems. I'll also mention that not a single person I know outside of the tech industry has even heard of this stuff. You have to at least try a little before you quit, right?

They will screw you every chance they get.

AnotherDesigner··on Started a stupid company. Failed.
I wish you well. Do whatever it takes to keep your family comfortable, regroup and get ready to fight again. In todays economy, we're all entrepreneurs. You don't get to keep a job your entire life like some of our parents/grandparents did. You fight every day for your family, hustle, make friends, call in favors and help those that need it.

You tried. And you should try again. You've learned something from this but you won't get a chance to use it unless you try again.

> Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not: the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent. — Calvin Coolidge
