AnIdiotOnTheNet··on 'Incredibly noticeable': alcohol ban cut family violence, crime in Alice Springs
If they aren't manipulative, if I actually want what they are selling, why are they inserting themselves into my attention instead of waiting for me to look for them in a catalog?

The entire industry is a blight on the human condition. We only permit it because we're a society that glorifies exploitation and predation in the name of almighty mammon.

If everyone in advertising and marketing died in their sleep tonight the world would be a markedly better place tomorrow.

AnIdiotOnTheNet··on How VSCode made bracket pair colorization faster (2021)
A statement like this just makes me think most developers are the passengers in that episode of futurama where the brains take over and make everyone stupid.

"I'm sending in more trains!" [0]

Only the trains are additional layers of abstraction and the accompanying bloat.

> I don't know if it's some sort of perverse Stockholm syndrome, or if young developers today are just not familiar with how incredibly fast desktop applications used to be decades ago.

Most of them have no idea how fast a computer is because they've been using ludicrously slow software for so long they just think that's normal. Microsoft developers these days seems to have a particularly warped understanding of what "fast" means in computing, see Teams startup times [0], VS startup times [1], or that whole debacle with Windows Terminal.

[1] I couldn't find a video in a reasonable time frame, but it is very slow compared to its predecessors just to launch let alone do anything that might justify it.

To be fair, non-electron full-fat Visual Studio is also a pig.
AnIdiotOnTheNet··on US approves chicken made from cultivated cells
> I could switch to vegan food only after I have discovered that I can make a home-made bread that is highly enriched in protein by removing about 75% of the starch during a 6 to 7 minute washing of the dough. With a longer washing time it is possible to separate completely the gluten from the starch, but I am not willing to spend more time every morning with breakfast preparation, and this is enough to provide on adequate protein to calories ratio.

This is called seitan and has been a meat replacement for at least a thousand years. You can buy it in the store. Hell, you can even buy wheat gluten itself right from the store and make your own without all the washing.

AnIdiotOnTheNet··on US approves chicken made from cultivated cells
> If that bothers you, there are always more expensive ways to eat real meat.

Or, you know, just stop eating meat.

AnIdiotOnTheNet··on Loneliness is stronger when not alone
Hypercard was also dreamed up while on an acid trip, IIRC.
AnIdiotOnTheNet··on Why I started (and stopped) making games
Yeah. And no, I'm not linking them for anyone for two reasons:

-I value the tiny shred of anonymity I have here so I can continue to express stupid opinions without being too self conscious about it.

-Honestly they just aren't very good, at least not in any traditional sense. I find that I am not passionate enough about most of my ideas to expend the time that seems necessary to flesh them out into a coherent and worthwhile experience.
AnIdiotOnTheNet··on Compromise Creates Values
You're seriously comparing a cancer diagnosis with being bored while reveling in nigh-infinite opportunity?

There is a simple and obvious solution to this "abundance boredom": remove the abundance. There. Done. Put all your money in charity or, if that's too altruistic of you, lock it away in investments where you can't get at it easily and force yourself to live off of the national median income (~$38k individual, $70k household in the us).

The thing about being poorer is that you can't do the opposite, so it is quite understandable that no one in a poorer position has any sympathy.

AnIdiotOnTheNet··on Releasing an indie game on 3 consoles at once and failing financially (2016)
Have you played Scavenger SV4? Might not quite be the kind of thing you're into but it is definitely something the developer put a lot of time into making interesting.
AnIdiotOnTheNet··on Releasing an indie game on 3 consoles at once and failing financially (2016)
> The AAA game may cost me 4 times as much, but it gives me 400 times the value.

I... guess? If your only calculation of value is how much money was spent making the latest edition of a cookie cutter experience like 90% of AAA games are (because execs aren't willing to risk budget coloring outside the lines). And frankly I find that pretty sad, but looking at sales numbers I guess that's the majority of the gaming market.

AnIdiotOnTheNet··on On the road to KDE Plasma 6
That's what I like about Plasma. Unlike GNOME it is designed to be used by actual human beings who actually use computers to do actual work, not some imagined user and use case by some high-on-their-own-farts designer.

It is consequently very customizable so you can make it work better for how you work, instead of how some GNOME dev thinks you should work. It also didn't take 15 years of complaints to get thumbnails in Dolphin.

AnIdiotOnTheNet··on Buy well, buy once
Precisely. We are constantly bombarded by messages to buy buy buy. Fill that hole in your life with plastic crap that will surely be the thing you were missing that finally makes you happy. And when that doesn't work, well, just buy some more!

The trick they pulled is telling us all that inconvenience is bad and needs to be eliminated, but what I've come to see is that life happens in inconveniences, and consumerism tells us we should trade our life for their junk.

AnIdiotOnTheNet··on Bye Bye Ubuntu, Hello Manjaro. How Did We Get Here?
Yeah, I agree (although with Kinoite because fuck GNOME). It still has plenty of issues, but at least I don't feel like I'm constantly fighting the system just to use software.

AnIdiotOnTheNet··on Math has changed the shape of gerrymandering
> (and, of course, vice versa).

True, but only one of these parties ever talks about fixing the system. To be fair, of course, that's partially because the data says they'd win almost every election if it came down to a straight popular vote, so any system not specifically gamed against them is in their favor.

AnIdiotOnTheNet··on US urged to reveal UFO evidence after claim that it has intact alien vehicles
He could have been driven to crackpottery also.

Consider this hypothetical: A person in intelligence knows something you would rather didn't get out, but you suspect there's a chance they will leak it. Maybe they have a personality that leads you to believe they can't in good conscience keep that secret, or maybe you're just callous and paranoid, doesn't really make a difference.

One thing you could do is convince them of something completely ridiculous that no one will take seriously. Even easier if there is a large existing community of nutters that already believe that (possibly you manufactured that too, just for such an occasion). Put on some little shows, make sure they see some documents they "weren't supposed to", and when they've bought into it enough have someone all but confirm it to them in person.

Then, if they're in a leaking mood, they'll discredit themselves for you.

AnIdiotOnTheNet··on US urged to reveal UFO evidence after claim that it has intact alien vehicles
Given the enormity of the universe and the seeming[0] impossibility of FTL travel, plus the complete absence of astronomical observation of extraterrestrial civilization, and the incredibly tiny (on astronomical scales) window of time in which we have data, any other explanation for pretty much any phenomena we care to observe will be more likely than "aliens did it".

AnIdiotOnTheNet··on 'Guilt Tipping': Pressure to tip has gotten out of control
You and me both, but it won't happen for several reasons:

1) The kind of people who bitch about tipping actually just hate the expectation of it. They're the same people who bitch about the price of everything and how "no one wants to work" when there's a staffing shortage that inconveniences them. They want to keep things just the way they are so they can continue feeling rightously indignant for not tipping instead of admitting they just don't give a shit about labor.

2) Business owners love the system because it effectively means the customers who aren't jackasses subsidize the ones who are and they can pretend the cost of their product is lower than it actually is.

3) The US is a hellscape run by sociopaths that routinely and gleefully burns its people on the alter of mammon. Nearly everyone in a position to do anything about this situation is both 1 and 2.

AnIdiotOnTheNet··on Exercise Has Many Health Benefits. Weight Loss Isn't One of Them
> Yeah right, counting calories works for "99.7% of the population" but then everyone struggles with weight loss, somehow.

Yes, because being hungry sucks. Why this has to be explicitly pointed out to you, I don't know.

AnIdiotOnTheNet··on Exercise Has Many Health Benefits. Weight Loss Isn't One of Them
Except that's what I'm addressing: there is evidence that it really doesn't matter what you are eating, as long as you eat less.
AnIdiotOnTheNet··on I went down the rabbit hole of buying GitHub Stars, so you won't have to
We don't have to do that, just make sure that dishonest behavior is not the dominant strategy. In our society, we could start by ceasing to promote and reward such behavior constantly.
AnIdiotOnTheNet··on Exercise Has Many Health Benefits. Weight Loss Isn't One of Them
Iff your diet doesn't change, which it often does because people often reward themselves after a workout, or a week of working out, or whatever. They tell themselves "I can eat this entire pizza, I've earned it", and the math gets fucked because of it.
AnIdiotOnTheNet··on Exercise Has Many Health Benefits. Weight Loss Isn't One of Them
> What does the O mean here, exactly?

Doesn't matter. Ignore the O, focus on the I. If you want to weigh a certain amount, look up what the sedentary metabolic estimate is for that weight and consume that number that despite any additional exercise you are doing.

The hard part is dealing with being hungry all the time, and despite the promises of fad diets everywhere, there is no solution to that that I have found that doesn't involve stimulants.

AnIdiotOnTheNet··on Exercise Has Many Health Benefits. Weight Loss Isn't One of Them
> Consider the following: 1500 calories worth of Snickers bar would not have the same effects as 1500 calories worth of beans and legumes or 1500 calories of pure soda.

How sure of that are you? Mark Haub, Nutrition Professor, famously ate a diet made entirely of "convenience store food" like Twinkies and chips for 10wks at a caloric deficit.

Despite a diet based on pure junk food, all of his health metrics improved and he lost 27lbs[0].

As someone who has lost well over 100lbs and who struggles constantly to deal with their weight, I can say from my experience that how many calories you eat is practically the only thing that matters. I have tried all the fad diets over the years and not a one of them has managed to lose me any weight and perform any better without strict calorie counting.

AnIdiotOnTheNet··on I went down the rabbit hole of buying GitHub Stars, so you won't have to
Maybe any game where the "proper" way to play involves dishonesty and sociopathic behavior isn't one we should be structuring society around, and therefore we really shouldn't be trying to play it in the first place.
AnIdiotOnTheNet··on The Obscuritory - Odd, lesser-known games and software
I think this is mostly survivorship bias. We remember the interesting stuff and forget about the 90% of crap, while we experience current crap in real time. There are some really stellar games that inspired and shaped the industry, a few odd-balls that hold up surprisingly well but everyone seems to have forgotten about, and then there's a huge wasteland of <insert puzzle or arcade game>-clones.

Yes, it came to being in a time where "the obviously right way" to do FPS controls on a PC hadn't been settled on yet. I see similar complaints from people who play Goldeneye for the N64 without having lived through the era.

Good news though: System Shock Enhanced Edition fixed it in 2015 and can be had for $10. Just disable Cyberspace though, it really doesn't hold up well.
