AlphaCerium··on A Mac-like experience on Linux
I think the fact that GNOME extensions break/need to be updated with each DE upgrade is a great reason to pick KDE over GNOME.
AlphaCerium··on Passkeys are just passwords that require a password manager
> I've already had to migrate password managers after my choice was taken over by Private Equity.

do you remember which one? hope it wasn't bitwarden :/

how about making it harder for them to stop a nicotine addiction, or get support after experiencing sexual assault?

AlphaCerium··on Valve releases Team Fortress 2 code
if by "DOTA FPS" you mean their new MOBA Deadlock, AFAIK it's not related to DOTA in any way.

wow. that almost perfectly summed up my thoughts about modern technology and its intentions.

AlphaCerium··on Yamaha and Lola pair up to enter Formula E next season
I used to feel the same way until I actually watched a Formula E race. The racing is incredibly close at times (I think last race had a 3 wide finish for the podium), and features like Fan boost make for a really engaging overall experience
AlphaCerium··on Microsoft stole my Chrome tabs, and it wants yours, too

AlphaCerium··on Gitstr: Send and receive Git patches over Nostr
Then switch to a different one, the point of a federated network is that anyone is able to talk to anyone, not that they have to.
AlphaCerium··on I don't always use LaTeX, but when I do, I compile to HTML (2013)
Seconding this, I had no idea the site wasn't the official manual until now!
AlphaCerium··on iPad users will miss out on third-party app stores, browser engines, and more
So don't install the app. Simple as that, if the developer wanted you to be a user of their app, they'd have put it on the App Store too.
AlphaCerium··on iPad users will miss out on third-party app stores, browser engines, and more
I trust a company that stands to only gain a profit from me using their products just as little as the state I reside in, if not less.
AlphaCerium··on iPad users will miss out on third-party app stores, browser engines, and more
When I open an .apk file from a new application for the first time, I get a popup that asks me if I want to allow installations from unknown sources for this app, with a button that directly takes me to the setting to toggle this, and then immediately allows me to install the application.
AlphaCerium··on iPad users will miss out on third-party app stores, browser engines, and more
Side loading on android is laughably easy, probably easier than installing a program on a Windows device. If we can consider the installers that Windows users need to use to get something as simple as Chrome installed easy to use, downloading an .apk file and opening it and pressing install should seem trivial by comparison.
AlphaCerium··on LED Industrial Piercing
Yeah, the London Hackspace lost their building as it was being demolished for new development in the area. They're currently trying to rebuild in a temporary location in Park Royal for anyone interested: https://wiki.london.hackspace.org.uk/view/London_Hackspace
AlphaCerium··on What every software developer must know about Unicode in 2023
Not everyone runs Linux, and not every browser has a reader mode. This should not be the solution. There should definitely be an option to disable all these features, especially the dark mode toggle, that one's a fun premise, but horrific for usability.
AlphaCerium··on VeraCrypt: Free open-source disk encryption for Windows, Mac OS X, Linux
Apparently Truecrypt has had development shut down in 2014 and the devs are now telling people to migrate to Bitlocker as it may be insecure: https://truecrypt.sourceforge.net/
AlphaCerium··on Mwmbl: Free, open-source and non-profit search engine
Arguably, Google was probably a odd name for a search engine to people in the 90s that weren't maths-savvy.

Might I also add: https://youtu.be/aVwxzDHniEw?feature=shared Which works through them from first principles with beautiful animations.
AlphaCerium··on Shorts risks cannibalising core YouTube business, say senior staff
Personally I use UnHook to completely hide all recommendations, merch/music/offers/etc. ads, replace the default homepage with the subscriptions page and generally clean the UI:

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/youtube-recom...

In addition, I use the Stylus extension with a custom stylesheet to restore the UI to the roughly pre-2016 look. This has allowed me to essentially treat my Youtube experience as a RSS feed viewer, which I feel is a much healthier experience.

However, by doing this you do lose out on the discovery factor that Youtube is known for.

See DeArrow:

Created by the same developer as the wonderful SponsorBlock extension.

Replaces titles and thumbnails from videos with community-sourced, click-bait free versions.

> thoughtful longer content

I think that's the important bit.

Long form content that is artifically long does exist (see the trend of making videos exactly 10 mins or longer to maximise ad revenue).

But on the other end of the spectrum some of the best content I've watched on YouTube have had longer runtimes than some movies.

For every thousand click-baity creators on video platforms there are always a handful of people producing truly thoughtful, interesting content.

Whilst I agree that offfering a 15 minute video as an answer to a comment, with no timestamp/tldr for a quick answer is extremely inefficient, the video specifically states that you don't need to put on, as you say 'gazillion clothing' items, and the narrator in the video says that he only wears a jacket, gloves and a hat whilst cycling in the winter. The majority of the video is spent making the point that the barriers to winter cycling are not due to the cold, and more due to the infrastructure for winter cycling not existing in most places.
