Allezxandre··on iPadOS Identified as Digital 'Gatekeeper' Under New EU Tech Rules
Is it?

My experience with Arc (which I would assume would be heavier than Chrome) has been that it adds a lot of scary entries in the Resource Monitor App, but doesn't impact my day-to-day use on my 16 Gb M1 MBP.

With Safari, on the other hand, I've experienced audio stutter and delays when using resource intensive wep-apps like YouTube, Figma, Netflix and others.

Allezxandre··on The Busy Beaver Challenge
Wikipedia [1] has a problem statement that I find explains the game quite simply:

> the busy beaver game aims at finding a terminating program of a given size that produces the most output possible.

The Busy Beaver Challenge website [2] also has an explainer page with interactive Turing Machines.

Allezxandre··on Level responds to lock picker opening its $330 Apple Store lock in seconds
I understand where Level is coming from with this response, but cybersecurity has taught us better.

Yes, less than 10% of attacks use this exploit, but now that it’s public that you’re vulnerable to it, you become a target for 100% of attacks involving this exploit.

So for instance, if the delivery address of Level customers leak (and given the security of their physical locks, I would say them having bad cyber-security practices is not something too far-fetched), a malicious attacker would essentially have a database of home addresses with users that have bought a $300 locker that he can break into with the help of any YouTube tutorial

Allezxandre··on Are our phones becoming too smart to do dumb stuff?
It does, just hold the buttons you would hold to turn the phone off, not the button you would use to trigger Siri.

On FaceID phones that means holding both the Lock and Volume Up buttons.

Allezxandre··on Are our phones becoming too smart to do dumb stuff?
On iOS, just hold the button you would use to turn the phone off, but hold longer, it will loudly count down to 0 and call emergency services. You can also press the side button 5 times and it will call without you having to hold the button pressed. Works on iPhone and Apple Watch.

Allezxandre··on Apple Maps vs. Google Maps
Maybe, I don’t know, but it doesn’t mean we should just give up on protecting our data everywhere else.

A GPS or Bluetooth signal would be far more precise as a mass surveillance tool, so let’s not give that up

Allezxandre··on Apple Maps vs. Google Maps
But the point is that Apple Maps also has the commute suggestions without the privacy cost
Allezxandre··on It's time for us in the tech world to speak out about cryptocurrency

Allezxandre··on Google Maps changes a route after the drama of young people lost on a ghost road
Because it advertises a shorter time to arrival?

This has been an issue with Google Maps for some time: being more optimistic than e.g. Apple Maps just so you use the service, as suggested by this article: https://arturgrabow.ski/2018/02/19/navigation-apps/

Allezxandre··on Messenger API Updates for Europe
> But let's say you're a technically savvy person that is actually interested in cookie privacy; I'm really surprised you're not using "cookie autodelete"-style plugins already.

I feel this is like saying "we don't need safety legislations at work because businesses take a hit trying to stay compliant, if you don't want to be hurt at work, I'm surprised you're not wearing a helmet already."

Thing is, I wouldn't need "cookie autodelete" style plugins in the first place if companies cared about data privacy.

Allezxandre··on I overslept because iOS 14 disabled my alarm
Proof-of-work really is a nice system
Allezxandre··on Ask HN: How does your data science or machine learning team handle DevOps?
Hey it's slightly off topic, but if you work with Datasets, a struggle I often have is sharing them, so I built a service for this that you can find here: https://Joule.Host
Allezxandre··on Show HN: PgTyped – Typesafe SQL in TypeScript and Postgres
My favorite SQL library has been Go-Jet in Go: https://github.com/go-jet/jet

It has a different approach from PgTyped, which generates type-safe TypeScript code from SQL, whereas Go-Jet generates type-safe SQL from Go code

I'd love to try something along the lines of PgTyped and see how the two solutions compare though

Allezxandre··on TI removes access to assembly programs on the TI-83 Premium CE
I don't know for other countries, but as for France, it's compliant with the exam-mode that all calculators must comply to for national exams.

So I can't say for your specific case, but if you're a teacher, at least this feature exists and you can use it with your students.

By the way, even the iPhone has some apps compliant with this feature, where you're basically locked into the App. If you do manage to leave the App (i.e. by force restarting your phone), you void the exam start timestamp that the App saved

Allezxandre··on Diagram as Code
Just copy the text and use `sed` on your clipboard to transform your text.

Allezxandre··on Evidence SARS-CoV-2 Emerged from a Biological Laboratory in Wuhan, China
The article states that while the virus could have escaped from a lab, there is no evidence this was intentional.
Allezxandre··on Evidence SARS-CoV-2 Emerged from a Biological Laboratory in Wuhan, China
It might be my fault as I linked to the conclusion, but you are reducing the whole article to a part of the 9 miles distance argument
Allezxandre··on Google cancels legacy Google Play Music subscriptions
> If not, is there any other free service where I could upload my MP3 collection to, with an app for mobile which would sync the data between mobile devices?

Not free, but Apple Music allows you to do that. I believe Spotify has that feature as well.

Allezxandre··on Swift: Google’s Bet on Differentiable Programming
Not really. The sentence with the King was used to mean that the new King immediately got into function.

> Le Roi (Louis ##) est mort. Vive le Roi (Louis ## + 1) !

Using the sentence with Deep Learning and Differential Learning just suggests that Differential Learning is the heir/successor/evolution of Deep Learning. It does not imply that they are the same thing.

As a French person used to the saying, Le Cun probably meant that.

Allezxandre··on Invidious: an alternative front-end to YouTube
While an interesting project, at first glance I don't really see what this front-end brings to YouTube compared to the original front-end. Speed, maybe? But this comes at the cost the UX.

I would much rather see something like this implemented: https://uxdesign.cc/my-attempt-at-redesigning-youtube-for-a-...

Allezxandre··on Show HN: Joule, a Git-like workflow for your Datasets
Git LFS is limited by your hosting solution. If you use Gitlab, for instance, your repository cannot exceed 10 Gb of storage space (including code and other ressources). And on Github I believe that limit is 1 Gb.

Many Deep Learning datasets that deal with pixel-data grow past the 10 Gb mark.

Allezxandre··on Show HN: Joule, a Git-like workflow for your Datasets
The service is basically dataset hosting. Today, hosting code is quite easy, with git for instance, you can have your code up for sharing on Github in a few seconds. However, as soon as you need to make your dataset available, you can’t use Git anymore. So instead, I’ve seen people use Google Drive to host the datasets, and then write scripts to make the downloading and stitching of the Zip files easier.

I built this service to solve that: instead of hosting the datasets yourself, you just push them using Joule, and the users that download your code will only need to run a single command to download your code.

EDIT: here’s a sample Git repository with a dataset hosted on Joule: https://gitlab.com/joule-host/that-state-of-the-art-research...

Allezxandre··on GNU Taler 0.0.0 released
I understood the website the same way you did: the merchant must use the same exchange as the customer. I hope we're wrong.

For the sake of anonymity though, it appears to me that using a new exchange would be easy as you would not require to log in with an email and a password, but rather with a kind of web-browser extension or something similar. Each merchant could then become its own exchange, and you would only see a few big exchanges whose role would just be to make everything simpler for the merchant, and that simplicity would come at the price of an increased fee. This is a bit like what PayPal or Stripe are doing today.
