Alien1Being··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
People in my life just do not drink when we get together.

In many non-Anglo-Euro countries, drinking is seen as moderately aberrant behaviour akin to frequenting sex workers or doing drugs.

I remember that everyone would whisper about an uncle of mine who "drank".

The poor man had around 5 or 6 drinks a week and has a moderately successful career as a lawyer at my country's Supreme Court.

But he was still the one who "drank".

Alien1Being··on Welcome to the Medical Clinic at the Interplanetary Relay Station
The Sydney hospital where one in 10 patients waits more than 43 hours

One in 10 Blacktown emergency patients waited more than 43 hours to be admitted or transferred.

...while almost 9 per cent give up and leave without completing treatment.

NSW has not met any of its access targets for emergency wait times, which stipulate that at least 80 per cent of patients should be admitted or transferred to another hospital within six hours, according to Bureau of Health Information data published on Wednesday.

Alien1Being··on Welcome to the Medical Clinic at the Interplanetary Relay Station
The ongoing efforts at digitising medical records and care have made waiting times and outcomes much worse.

But it is cheaper and and easier sell to the gullible public than providing more funding and facilities.

"Woman found under coat in Nottingham A&E died days later

An investigation has been launched after a woman died days after being found unconscious underneath her coat while waiting in A&E for seven hours.

The 39-year-old woman is understood to have first attended A&E at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham on the evening of 19 January complaining of a severe headache. She was triaged and then observed by nurses three times. Her case was escalated but she was not seen by a doctor before being discovered.

When the woman was called to see a doctor, she did not respond. It was assumed that she had left A&E because she had waited so long. She was discovered and transferred to intensive care but died three days later on 22 January.

A source familiar with the hospital told LBC, which first reported the incident, that the A&E department could have up to 80 patients waiting at a single time and that wait times could be as long as 14 hours"

Alien1Being··on What I Found Out About Organ Donation Shocked Me
"a strict firewall is supposed to separate treating physicians (who are charged with decisions around the removal of life support and declaring when a patient is dead) and organ donation teams.

But a federal investigation found that firewall is often ignored.

And The New York Times reported that health care workers in several states said they had witnessed procurement staff members “persuading hospital clinicians to administer morphine, propofol and other drugs to hasten the death of potential donors.”

A former Obama White House official testified before Congress that she had heard directly from whistle-blowers at procurement organizations that they were trained to target inexperienced physicians, especially in rural areas, who may be less likely to push back."

Alien1Being··on Toyota is taking the Corolla electric
Too late.

Us rusted on Toyota customers are moving to Chinese EVs

My family's last 6 cars were Toyota hybrids. But as a corporation, Toyota is notoriously anti-electric.

Tomorrow I am test driving a Xpeng G6, a Zeek X and a BYD Atto 3.

No more anti-electric Toyotas for me.

( And of course no cars from fascist countries like the USA, that goes without saying )

Alien1Being··on OpenAI breaches Medicare, Albanese reveals
OpenAI took three months to inform Australia.

On the other hand, Australian cybersecurity is so pathetic that without the email they would never have known.

I wonder how many state actors (US, Russia, China, India, Germany, probably even Laos ) have already breached Australian government security but have not been polite enough to email the relevant departments to let them know.

"OpenAI breached Medicare’s portal on June 18, but did not notify the government until September 10 via an email to Medicare’s public mailbox, a delay Albanese described as unacceptable.

Five days after the September 10 email from OpenAI, Services Australia, which administers the portal, reported the breach to the Australian Signals Directorate. The government was informed of the incident at the end of last week."

Alien1Being··on Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain
The actual research says something far less clickworthy. Are Stanford's PR dribbles now created by LLMs ?

"Two parallel neural ectoderm progenitors contribute to the developing brain

Abstract When and how different brain regions diversify from one another remains unresolved.

Does a common neural ectoderm progenitor generate the entire brain? Or do multiple neural ectoderm progenitors exist, each restricted to form specific brain regions?

Here our lineage tracing studies of mouse embryos support the latter model. Two parallel brain progenitors emerge simultaneously during gastrulation: anterior neural ectoderm (forebrain/midbrain progenitor) and posterior neural ectoderm (hindbrain progenitor). Differentiation of human pluripotent stem cells into anterior or posterior neural ectoderm-like cells revealed these were lineage committed to forebrain/midbrain versus hindbrain fates, respectively. They harbored diverging chromatin landscapes foreshadowing future forebrain/midbrain versus hindbrain identities. We further differentiated human pluripotent stem cells into hindbrain rhombomere 5/6-specific motor neurons, which were hitherto difficult to generate in vitro.

Hence, we postulate the brain is a composite organ emanating from two lineage-restricted progenitors; these dual progenitors may be evolutionarily conserved across 550 million years from hemichordates to mammals."

They are welcome to make stuff that nobody wants. Weird designs, made poorly and disintegrating in months.

But then the share price drops.

ie: the market capitalisation drops.

They then have to pay more money to borrow.

Fewer investors are interested in giving them money.

Employees lose jobs.

Restructuring happens again and again and again.

Employees lose jobs, more jobs and still more jobs.

Alien1Being··on Tao: Open math problems being non-renewably mined by AI
Here most local STEM PhDs try to get into finance. This is largely due to lack of funding for science and poor opportunities for PhDs. Why be a poorly paid postdoc when Jane Street is offering a million USD signup bonus ?

PhDs from poorer overseas do try to get related jobs here, mainly to be able to get a permanent resident visa.

Alien1Being··on Tao: Open math problems being non-renewably mined by AI
Tao's central point seems to be:

"In short, the indiscriminate use of powerful solution-extraction tools can achieve the immediate short-term goal of solving problems at hand, but at the cost of sustaining the ecosystem for the next wave of progress, or in understanding the progress already obtained. "

I am no mathematician, may have misunderstood his point and would be delighted to receive any corrections.
