AA-BA-94-2A-56··on Surveillance-by-Design in Proposed Amendments to the UK Investigatory Powers Act
Loved that episode of Black Mirror
AA-BA-94-2A-56··on History Is Written by the Losers (2016)
Even paper needs shelter. It must be kept from moths, because they eat holes in it. It must be kept from humidity, because it causes the fibres to expand and the ink to run.

It stands to reason that Sima Qian, if he cared about posterity, would have submitted his works to people who make it a point on preserving records.

Similarly a person is writing a digital work, they will need to go through a digital analogue of the same process, if they want to preserve their work.

The process of bit entropy acts like digital moths.

As a web developer, it’s less about me caring and more about my boss caring.

If anything, give the C-suites the shitbox laptops.

AA-BA-94-2A-56··on Could inflammation be the cause of myriad chronic conditions? (2019)
Many people on social media use the word inflammation as if they're describing a root cause that they have control over, such as dietary cholesterol or exercise. But my understanding of this word is that inflammation is a symptom– an indirect result of any number of other factors.
AA-BA-94-2A-56··on How Gyms Make Money (2015)
Sorry but this is not completely correct. Many expert bodybuilders use a variety of machines to train each muscle group.

Power lifters, however, tend to focus on the compound movements and therefore probably need less equipment.

AA-BA-94-2A-56··on Intel's Latest I9 Chip Has Speeds Up to 6GHz
You say that, but applications use up orders of magnitude more system resources these days due to being built upon several layers of abstractions. Some modern applications feel more sluggish than their feature-complete counterparts from back in the day.

AA-BA-94-2A-56··on Ask HN: How do you get out of a rut?
> But the rut isn't the problem. The fact that you think you need to get out of it is the problem.

This is an incredible insight in and of itself, thank you.

Clock speed is not an indicator of performance.
AA-BA-94-2A-56··on Study finds the gulf stream is warming and shifting closer to shore
I actually agree with you. My beef with billionaires isn't that they fly in jets or invest in companies that make cheap products. My beef with billionaires is that they by-and-large put money behind preventing the necessary climate action.

This is essentially a tragedy of the commons, which could easily be overcome if the right people got into power. The right people will never get into power, because it is against the interest of billionaires.

> The only way to do anything is to sacrifice something.

Won't be enough, because the biggest consumers of carbon are billionaires and their corporations.

AA-BA-94-2A-56··on Forty years of programming
I (30m) had only just graduated university (Master of Information Technology, majoring in Software Engineering) when (due to my desk setup that was not ergonomic, sleep position, and other factors) I was hit with an ulnar nerve nerve injury which left me unable to use the computer. It took me six months to recover, and in that time I had to give up my gym habit, all video games, looking for work. I was lucky it happened to me then, and not now. I have a mortgage, and my wife and I are planning children. I can't have this happen again in the future.

The best thing I ever did was get a really good ergonomic chair after this for A$700.

I can answer this! The moment that one tenant in my house didn't have an iPhone, so couldn't be in the house group chat on iMessage. It would take too many calls to coordinate the six people we have at home. Group messaging is the best option, and of those, WhatsApp is the best option.

AA-BA-94-2A-56··on How mobile apps illegally share personal data
Good grief. This is like saying driving to work is a choice because it takes only 45 minutes, but you could opt for a three hour walk instead.

Because a potential solution exists in which people can have the optimal solution with no drawbacks— why not have it.

It isn’t “convenience” and other “first world problems” to realise that you need to use certain software to function in society with few trade offs.

The privacy-invading nature of many pieces of software isn’t innate. It’s a choice, and it could easily be regulated.

People shouldn’t have to pay with their data.

AA-BA-94-2A-56··on macOS users: what have you installed with brew?
The distance of cask means I install everything with it.

Which is handy if I ever feel like wiping my Mac fresh and running a single command to install everything.

AA-BA-94-2A-56··on Ask HN: Is My Career Salvagable?
Normalcy in software engineering is when incompetents are getting jobs.
AA-BA-94-2A-56··on Show HN: dnum − A small TypeScript library to handle decimal numbers
I'm curious where you got this information from? How do you know the third-party libraries are not up to par? Is this personal or second-hand experience? Is it an assumption?
AA-BA-94-2A-56··on Ask HN: Do you do something else while you work?
I work from home, and I've been tempted to do this. However, for me, I'd rather just get the job done in fewer hours with my full focus, and then do chores, etc, in my other hours.
AA-BA-94-2A-56··on Show HN: dnum − A small TypeScript library to handle decimal numbers
This. Fixed-point decimal isn't even implemented in standard Rust– which I would deem a very mature language, because they want to keep the standard library quite small. If you want to use fixed-point decimal, there's a crate for that;

You can compile Java and Go to web assembly and use those wherever you would have used JavaScript.
