I'm just another dude typing on the internet.

8plot··on Donate to The NetBSD Foundation
Major omission is the lack of bitcoin address. At least for me, the simplest way to donate.
8plot··on Donate to the Internet Archive using bitcoin
And for those interested, you can watch the donations so far here: http://blockchain.info/address/494294730abf03c846988654f15d1...
8plot··on More Paypal nonsense
You make a fair enough point, the market size of bitcoin users is still very small. However, the technology it provides is real, and IMO, a valid solution to this problem. (even if it's not the only solution; it's not uncommon to accept multiple payment methods.)

Those that want to donate with bitcoin can easily google how to buy it, and will discover it's easier than ever to acquire. (in some cases, using paypal!)

8plot··on More Paypal nonsense
Unfortunately the down-voters of my comment disagree. Until they present their argument against bitcoin, I assume they are only being ignorant.
8plot··on More Paypal nonsense
Have you considered using bitcoin? If you have considered, but dismissed it, would you mind answering why bitcoin wouldn't work for your business?
8plot··on More Paypal nonsense
Bitcoin is an option.
8plot··on Ask HN: What books to read on developing mental models and increasing cognition?
It's posts like these that make me realize how much I miss the exposed upvote/downvote comment counters that hacker news used to display.
8plot··on Ask HN: What API to the physical world do you wish existed?
I don't think we need to wait for nanobots, the technology is already here now to accomplish real-time monitoring. Here is one example for blood glucose monitoring implant: http://www.popsci.com/technology/article/2010-07/wireless-im...
8plot··on Ask HN: What API to the physical world do you wish existed?
Yes, this! For years I have been complaining about how silly it is that I know far more about the day to day condition of my vehicle than I do about my own body.
8plot··on 30 Austin tech CEOs headed to California in search of workers
Austin is not like the rest of Texas. It's common to hear others here comment the same: "Austin is not Texas". "Keep Austin Weird" is also a common t-shirt and bumper sticker slogan.
8plot··on If TV Companies Released Authorized Torrents With Ads, Would You Download Them?
I'd rather skip the ads and just pay some money directly for the shows I like and want to encourage to continue. Because I don't want to be tracked, I'd prefer bitcoin.
8plot··on Bitcoin exchange account of Coinpal shut down by Paypal
One guy named Bernard von NotHaus created the "Liberty Dollar" and is now facing a 45 year prison sentence. After a little googling, it's unclear why exactly he is being punished, but this how one article summed it up:

"Congress has exclusive power to coin money in the U.S. and to regulate its value, according to the Treasury Department."

8plot··on Poll: How many times have you applied to YC?
There should be an option for: "0 (interested and thought about it, maybe someday)".
8plot··on On Why Open Source Developers run Mac OS X
I disagree. To me, the jail-break is just a default, one-time requirement to gain control over a device I own. It's actually not too difficult, so I don't consider it fiddling.
8plot··on On Why Open Source Developers run Mac OS X
Since I don't consider using SSH "fiddling", I don't know what you mean, and I'd guess that most developers don't think twice about how to use SSH. (If they did, they're not much of a developer in my book).

It's ironic to me that the most difficult part was having to jail-break my iphone. Apple certainly doesn't make my life any easier.

8plot··on On Why Open Source Developers run Mac OS X
Why? SSH is very convenient, easy for anyone to understand (including my 9 year old nephew), and I trust the security. What is better?
8plot··on On Why Open Source Developers run Mac OS X
FWIW, using only ubuntu, I did both of these things last month to create a Christmas DVD of home movies and cell phone video clips.

Without much fuss, I transfered the video files via ssh from my jail-broken iphone, then edited, mastered and burned the DVDs using kdenlive. It was much easier than I expected.

8plot··on Google and Microsoft Cheat on Slow-Start. Should You?
something like: ip route change default via 0.0.0.0 dev eth0 initcwnd 10
8plot··on Modafinil
I asked my doctor for a Modafinil prescription. She refused, but gave me a free one-week sample of Nuvigil instead. It was great. I made the sample last for months by taking a half pill only when I felt I needed it.
8plot··on Choosing names for your computers
I like naming systems after ex-coworkers, and especially ex-managers.
8plot··on Ask HN: Is this a scalable idea?
I've had similar conversations with colleagues. I love the idea and hope to someday try it.

One method I like is to use a simple agile/scrum type project where the product backlog is crowdsourced.

8plot··on In 2010 China will become the world’s second-largest economy
Would China even allow a YC?
8plot··on [dead]
"vi" is missing.

Also the two handed "vim".

8plot··on How to fail... gloriously
In which video does he explain how to tell the difference between a brilliant startup founder and a crazy person?
8plot··on Dane who ripped his DVDs demands to be arrested under DRM law
I think most DVD movies have a DRM that you must break to backup the disk.
8plot··on Dane who ripped his DVDs demands to be arrested under DRM law
According to the article: "It's also illegal to break the DRM that restricts copying of DVDs."

I think it's a worthwhile attempt to resolve a contradiction of a stupid law.

8plot··on Are Google employees being discouraged from using Python for new projects?
The problem, as pointed out in the article/thread, they want products that will _immediately_ scale if the need arises.
8plot··on Netflix Prize: Was The Napoleon Dynamite Problem Solved?
Seems like movie ratings would be a great way to find a perfect match. Do dating sites use this data?
8plot··on Motorola Droid hands on
I believe it's the fingerprint scanner.
8plot··on An addictive game of perspective
This highlights why I'm no good at billiards.
