800xl··on Computer Reset, Dallas
Was that First Saturday?
800xl··on GNU Hurd News 2026-Q2
I think it is pretty impressive if you consider ChromeOS, with all of Google's resources behind it, is at 1.47%.
800xl··on GNU Hurd News 2026-Q2
Ha I just booted Haiku on my desktop yesterday and it ran surprisingly well. Kind of took me back to 2001. If Firefox is stable on it I actually probably could switch from Windows (my needs are pretty simple at home).
800xl··on MacBook Neo is so popular that Apple doubled production
Agree. I could afford "better" but the Neo suits my needs perfectly and I don't like expensive laptops that are prone to damage and theft. Dollar for dollar it is the best computer I've ever bought.
800xl··on My son pleasured himself on Gemini Live. Entire family's Google accounts banned
No idea, but at least Microsoft has some semblance of support where you can talk to a person.
800xl··on Welcome (back) to Macintosh
I (reluctantly) gave up on the Mac several years ago. Being on a PC might initially seem clunky and unrefined but it is actually very freeing to be able to choose my manufacturer, the OS, components, have tons of ports available, compatibility with older hardware (especially low res monitors). Standards and modularity are a beautiful thing.
800xl··on How I Experience the Web Today
Whenever I want to experience the web as it used to be I’ll run a search on wiby.me or browse neocities.org

800xl··on Delta single handle ball faucets (1963)
Weird. I figured at the time it was due to COVID related supply chain issues, but I just checked and they still don't stock them locally.
800xl··on Delta single handle ball faucets (1963)
I paid a little more and waited a couple weeks to receive a Delta single handle faucet for my kitchen back in 2020, rather than just buying what was available on the shelf at Lowe's. Model: #400LF-WF. The reviews at the time said it was basically the same faucet made back in the 60s. I'm glad I did - it has been an excellent faucet.
800xl··on Microsoft is plugging more holes that let you use Windows 11 without MS account
I agree with your overall point but I'm starting to regularly see older M series MacBooks on sale for around 600 or 700 dollars brand new. Maybe they are using the strategy of selling older hardware for less like they did with the iPhone SE.
800xl··on Ask HN: What is the biggest problem LLMs solved in your life/work?
Ah not sure the driving himself part was the best idea but I’m glad to hear the LLM helped and your dad is ok!
800xl··on Nobody’s buying homes, nobody’s switching jobs, America’s mobility is stalling
The job market is scary. I can afford a better house right now but am scared shitless I won’t be able to keep my income up. So we stay in our small old house for now, maybe forever.
800xl··on Dial-up Internet to be discontinued
I thought they were just a web portal and email service. It is amazing they still offered ISP services this long.

They had some pretty unscrupulous business practices back in the day with their free trial CD mailers. My cousin worked in their call center ages ago and would sometimes convince even people who didn't have a computer to pay for the service.

800xl··on How to Bring Back Oddly Shaped App Icons in macOS 26 Tahoe
MacOS is unusable to me now. I had to switch back to Windows. There is something about the iOS aesthetic on MacOS that looks like they just smeared Vaseline all over everything and this new glass design doesn't help.
800xl··on The History and Legacy of Visual Basic
I don't know much about Gambas but it seems it is Linux only whereas Xojo is cross platform.
800xl··on The History and Legacy of Visual Basic
Have you checked out Xojo? It is a VB6-like language with a similar development UI. There are desktop and web versions.

800xl··on Show HN: My self-written hobby OS is finally running on my vintage IBM ThinkPad
Have you checked out RISC OS already?
800xl··on Mastering Delphi 5 2025 Annotated Edition Is Now Complete
Xojo Web aims to do exactly what you describe.

https://xojo.com/products/web.php

I haven't really used it - I'm just a hobbyist coder who enjoys the VB6 style development of the desktop version of Xojo.

800xl··on What happens to your online accounts when you die?
My mother recently passed away after a long battle with dementia. Apparently when she would forget an account existed or she could not log in she would create another account. She had multiple email addresses and Facebook profiles that I know of.

I’ve been able to get Facebook to close a couple of her profiles but for the rest they keep asking for the same documentation over and over again (death certificate and funeral booklet) but will not take any action.

800xl··on Is stuff online worth saving?
Thank you for this! I pressed Ctrl+Shift+S in Firefox just to see if it would work and it has the same functionality.
800xl··on Elon Musk PAC will pay registered voters in swing states to sign a petition
Trump would be the 47th president.
800xl··on Writing HTML by hand is easier than debugging your static site generator
I liked CityDesk so much I wrote a clone of it in Xojo (then Realbasic) about 15 years ago. It has wysiwyg, templates, uses sqlite instead of a MS Access DB. Sometimes I think about making it public but don’t know if anyone would be interested these days.
800xl··on Ask HN: How many of you are consciously downsizing your devices/going retro?
I have a similar goal (1 laptop) but with a concession to have one monitor, probably with a built in USB C hub, as a docking station just for ergonomics sake.

Eventually it might be possible to only have a mobile phone that docks to a monitor and runs a full desktop os, like Samsung DEX.

800xl··on PysimpleGUI
Xojo is basically VB6's spiritual successor.

800xl··on Unciv
I like the earlier Civ games, up to around version 4 for this reason. Less complexity and micromanagement.
800xl··on Friend's Chandler, Matthew Perry, died at 54
Hopefully we still have Chuck for a while. His mom is still alive at 102!
800xl··on Microsoft Works
I appreciated the simplicity of Works. It was quick to start up and used less system resources than Office. PCs were so dog slow before SSDs. I used Works in college until some of my later classes required some advanced features that the Works spreadsheet could not provide and I was forced to start using Excel.
800xl··on A WWII spy who hid codes in her knitting
Apparently she is still alive at 102!
800xl··on I wish GPT4 had never happened
Someone has to unload the trucks and stack all that stuff on the shelves. It is pretty hard work. I know because I've done it.
