7839284023··on Show HN: Homebrew 6.0.0
Awesome! Thank you for the update.

I noticed that homebrew updated _all_ my casks when running 'brew upgrade' (even those with "auto_updates: true" in their Cask JSON API).

Is this intended, new default behavior? This did not use to happen...

I just got the update and wanted to thank you! But you were faster in informing me :).

Looks awesome! I especially like the Genres view.

Are there plans to add ReplayGain support?

7839284023··on Quill OS: An open-source OS for Kobo's eReaders
Yes it does.

I bought a Tolino Shine 5 and converted it to Kobo Clara BW following this guide: https://old.reddit.com/r/tolino/comments/1hni1fn/you_can_con...

At the end I still returned the Shine 5 because the small front-facing LED kept shining for no reason. I don’t know if it was hardware related or happened because of the firmware switch.

7839284023··on Ask HN: Hearing aid wearers, what's hot?
Which sadly does not work very reliably. At least on my end the selection changes back to default every few days. I reported this issue over the Apple Feedback app already…

I recently bought a thermal ESC/POS printer for 25 Euros on Aliexpress but I saw the sames ones for 30 Euro on Amazon.

I connected it to my linux server and without any drivers I can print with e.g.: `echo "Hello World!" >> /dev/usb/lp0`.

It also supports bar/QR codes.

7839284023··on Firefox is the best mobile browser
I would hope that Firefox on mobile got finally better/usable.

I still remember this blog post, which at the the time (late 2021), was 100% accurate: https://web.archive.org/web/20230221123127/https://blog.nori...

I would want to use a demo version (could be with limited functionality) before paying $99 upfront! Not a demo video...

7839284023··on I Built My Own Audio Player
For music on iOS I can't recommend foobar2000 [1] enough - and I tested ALL of the alternatives. You can import ANY folder (probably what OP is looking for) or use your "iPod Library". [2]

Personally, I sync my music via Synctrain (a Syncthing client). [3]

7839284023··on Show HN: Badgeify – Add Any App to Your Mac Menu Bar
I am not! Bought the program about a month ago and it’s really buggy on MacOS 15. You can clearly tell that it was developed for some previous MacOS version and has been since then forgotten.
7839284023··on High‑dose Vitamin D reduces disease activity in early multiple sclerosis onset
Exactly the same issue!

I have been trying to increase my Vitamin D levels for 15 years now but I just can't tolerate this supplement.

Lower dosage: ~500-1000 IE -> side effects come after around 3-4 days of daily intake.
Higher dosage: ~5000 IE -> side effects after a few hours.
I tried following most advice over here in the past but it did not work: https://web.archive.org/web/20240226035822/https://vitamindw...

I'll just live with my low blood Vitamin D levels.

I just tested your service but much prefer this: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=34530011

What you provide is way too basic.

7839284023··on Are noise-cancelling headphones to blame for young people's hearing problems?
I suffer from Misophonia and I wear my Bose QC45 10 hours+ a day - each day. Without them I could not function and they made life with Misophonia somewhat tolerable.
7839284023··on New 16GB Raspberry Pi 5 on sale now at $120
not OP, but: Home Assistant, zigbee2mqtt, Arr-Software-Suite, navidrome etc.

Basically a small server for self-hosted applications.

7839284023··on A feature-rich Hacker News client
> Apollo-like swipe left->right anywhere to go back (and reverse to drill back into the story you were on, which Octal doesn't support).

The feature is also present in HACK! It's called "Full screen swipe to go back" (you really need to search for it, the settings list is kind of messy). Also the reverse you mentioned is implemented.

7839284023··on Notes on EndeavourOS
> How likely am I to break my OS with EndeavourOS are there any things I should avoid?

If you have some Linux experience - unlikely I would say.

I'd suggest that you check https://archlinux.org/news/ from time to time, to see if there are any breaking changes / things that need manual intervention.

Asides from that, take care of your Pacnew files [1] and you should be good to go. EndeavourOS provides a "Welcome" application which makes this task simple.

Finally the EndeavourOS Forums are a super friendly place to get help in case you still manage to break something [2]

I like to use Z as a fish shell plugin. [1]
