6t6t6t6··on Why I left Japan after 10 years
I am from Barcelona and it happens something similar with my Japanese wife, but with Spanish. She is not fluent in Catalan nor Spanish, but she can speak some Catalan. And every time, because she looks asian, everybody changes the conversation to Spanish even if she started talking in Catalan.

Everybody assumes that she is Chinese as well...

So you mean that what you want in your project is submissive people who tolerate abuse?
6t6t6t6··on Ask HN: Victim of an unfounded harrasement accusation. Your thoughts?
Linus Torvalds is an arsehole who cannot behave as an adult and control his emotions.

If he was my boss, I would sue my company for allowing abusive behavior happening in the work place.

There's no excuse to do what he does, and it saddens me that a lot of good developers may choose not to work on Linux development just not to have to deal with him.

But I guess that this is what he wants. He built his little "kingdom of terror" and that way he can make sure that in his team there will never be developers who can diminish him.

6t6t6t6··on Japan, Short on Babies, Reaches a Worrisome Milestone
I think that your comment in not accurate in this context.

Most of the work visas that are extended in Japan are for qualified jobs. Having a university degree is mandatory for most of the types of visa. Also, they need to offer you a good salary.

Actually, one of the few ways to get a visa without having qualification is to come from an English speaking country and work as an English teacher because they need a lot them.

The contrary is called Social Dumping:

That's, for instance, what Margaret Thatcher did during the 80' in the UK when the working class people asked for better conditions.

6t6t6t6··on The Ruby Module Builder Pattern
Metaprogramming in Rails is for infrastructure code, not business logic.

As far as the metaprogramming is encapsulated in a module with a good API and serves to make business code easier to read, it can be extremely helpful.

6t6t6t6··on Elon Musk's Boring Company Begins First Tunnel
I am answering the same in two different comments but, if you look at Japan, their major cities are all covered by huge metro networks and they have earthquakes daily.
6t6t6t6··on Elon Musk's Boring Company Begins First Tunnel
Tokyo and other Japanese cities have massive underground metro networks and there are earthquakes every single day. Even during the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake, there was not a single derailment.

In Tokyo, the salaries for developers range from $50K to $100K. In order to get the 10K, you need to be a senior developers and bilingual.

All salaries include public Social Security.

6t6t6t6··on The fifty shades of Latin
Valencian/Catalan is actually one single language, although you can use either term to refer to it.

There are two main dialects of the language (eastern and western) but their division is by geographic borders, rather than by administrative divisions.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catalan_language

There is a nationalistic political movement called "Blaverism" that states that people in Catalonia and in the Valencian Community speak different languages, but their reasons are political, not linguistic.

6t6t6t6··on Chinese Offer to Eat Denmark’s Oyster Problem
If by cultural revolution you mean famine, then, by your logic, Ireland should have one of the best cuisines in the world.
6t6t6t6··on Chinese Offer to Eat Denmark’s Oyster Problem
I live in Japan and I stopped eating raw oysters. The oysters that are consumed in Asia are quite different from the ones that grow in the Atlantic or the Mediterranean. They are just bland when row. They don't have this amazing sea taste that you would find in a "plateau de fruits de mer".
6t6t6t6··on Chinese Offer to Eat Denmark’s Oyster Problem
> It's originally just an internet meme that indicates the Chinese eat all kinds of stuff no matter what.

All countries with a great culinary culture tend to use a great variety of ingredients in all their plates.

6t6t6t6··on Software Developers after 40, 50 and 60 Who're Still Coding
But my point is that if there is a relation of trust between the PM and the developers, padding is unnecessary.

I had PMs to who I could give optimistic estimations and risks. That way, the PM could plan the different scenarios (like extra features in case we had spare time).

Other PMs, the ones who converted estimations into deadlines, got lots of padding. And the problem of adding padding is that it is time lost, because a developer who adds padding cannot tell that they finished earlier.

6t6t6t6··on Software Developers after 40, 50 and 60 Who're Still Coding
I have a rule. If I trust the PM, I always give my best estimation and a level of confidence on this estimation with the risks. Like:

- I think it will take a week, but this part looks a bit complex, so we may have delays.

- Or, I did something similar last month, so I am quite sure that will take 3 days.

A good PM will know how to deal with this information and what to expect.

If I don't trust the PM, I just add massive paddings.

6t6t6t6··on Want to rescue rural America? Bust monopolies
The paradox is that a market, in order to be free, needs regulation.

Markets don't tend to entropy by themselves.

6t6t6t6··on [dead]
Diversity is the main "excuse" I hear when speaking about the inequality problems in the US.

USA is in no way more diverse than Europe. Are you saying that a guy from Lisboa and a guy from Prague (who, by the way, don't speak the same language) are more similar than a guy from LA and another from Columbus?

The root of the inequality in the USA is political, not the diversity.

6t6t6t6··on Hype Driven Development
StackOverflow is fantastic. What is bad is to copypaste code from SO without understanding it.
6t6t6t6··on Hype Driven Development
I don't know your use case, but my experience tells me that people uses react in places where it is absolutely not necessary.

Having state both in the front-end and in the back-end multiplies the complexity of any project, and the gains are only worth if you are (or you have) a good UI designer.

For the rest, the good'ol Rails + Turbolinks, jQuery and SJR can do a fantastic job, without having to think about synchronizing several sources of truth.

6t6t6t6··on Hype Driven Development
Been there, seen that.

I some months ago, they asked me to join a new team because they needed help with React and, although my main technology is RoR, I quite like JavaScript.

What I found is that the last developer shoved 2500 lines React, Redux and Typescript in a Rails application just to make a sortable and filterable table!! Apparently, after perpetrating this atrocity, he updated his resumée and found a job in another company.

I really think that it is good to have a grumpy senior developer in each team stopping those things from happening.

6t6t6t6··on Google plans ad-blocking feature in Chrome browser

This.

Internet is creating massive monopolies that are gathering an immense power that allow them to kill any other company that tries to compete with them. It's starting to be scary...

Page Rank is not rocket science. Sooner or latter someone else would have come to the same conclusion (using incoming links to asses popularity).

I don't doubt that Larry Page is a talented man, but he was in the good place in the good moment. Now Google is in a dominant position and there's no place for any competition, but if Google never existed, we would have some other company doing similar things as Google. Maybe they would have appeared one year later.
