654wak654··on Gemini 3.8 Flash and 3.8 Flash Cyber
I'm on the Ultra plan and use it for chat, antigravity, and some other work automations (similar to your example). The only time I've ever hit my limit is when I use Deep Think (which usually eats up 4-5% of the 6-hour usage limit per response).
654wak654··on Sovereign Tech Agency invests €500k in Flatpak
I think most people making a good ol' desktop program these days do it because they need very liberal access to the filesystem, or access to weird hardware peripherals. If they don't need either they could just put their app on the web!

Looking at the top apps on Mint's "app store" shows this trend too, everything is an editor of sorts (code editors, photo editors, video editors, audio editors, painting, modelling etc.)

654wak654··on Removable batteries in smartphones will be mandatory in the EU starting in 2027
Possible EU tariffs on electronics could have some effect.

IMO Nothing legal would need to be done. I think practical reasons like shipping time, shipping cost, and the annoyance of using a phone from one region with telecoms in another region would drastically reduce sales. Also you're not going to get 1st party support and that effects Apple devices more than others.

654wak654··on OpenAI – How to delete your account
It's not the bubble, it's the DoD
654wak654··on I'm returning my Framework 16
The only downside is that you have to run macOS
654wak654··on Show HN: Stop AI scrapers from hammering your self-hosted blog (using porn)
Ah wait this is literally in the Matrix where humanity darkened the sky.
654wak654··on Show HN: Stop AI scrapers from hammering your self-hosted blog (using porn)
Looking through all the methods people are developing and proposing in this thread, there is a story developing where the "clean" machines are pushing humans to devolve into toxic porn-crazed racists with stolen material.

Makes me wish I was a good enough writer to develop this into something. Maybe I can use an LLM to write it...

654wak654··on Hacker News front page now, but the titles are honest
That's it, AI has finally made HN obsolete!
654wak654··on Server DRAM prices surge 50% as AI-induced memory shortage hits hyperscalers
Best we're getting is probably a stop to the price raises, but no price cuts. Kids will continue to grow up not knowing a $600 flagship GPU or a $1000 gaming PC.
654wak654··on BYD builds fastest car
I guess EVs have the acceleration and top speed crowns now, but it'll take a while for them beat any 24 hours of Le Mans records.
654wak654··on Nvidia buys $5B in Intel
I'm very pessimistic about this. Goodbye to those nice, budget-friendly intel GPUs. nGreedia is going to continue selling 8 gig cards to consumers forever.
654wak654··on Uncomfortable Questions About Android Developer Verification
> I have never heard of a bank that has a hard requirement of a mobile app

My bank's app recently started warning me that I should "Turn off developer mode" for """security""" on every sign-in. This warning doesn't stop me from using the app yet, but I'm sure it'll get there.

654wak654··on How Figma’s multiplayer technology works (2019)
The videos have white backgrounds, maybe it's to match that and keep the page cleaner.
654wak654··on Is an Intel N100 or N150 a better value than a Raspberry Pi?
Probably for easy mouse & keyboard support? Also, mini PCs are usually used in offices a lot and I bet most places that buy these things still have lots of USB-A storage devices as well.
654wak654··on Xiaomi Home Integration for Home Assistant
I think they were referring more to Land Rovers making mechanics out of car owners (Due to their famously bad reliability), but I may have misunderstood the joke.
654wak654··on Intel announces retirement of Pat Gelsinger
18A isn't going to use high NA yet, it's just EUV. Intel is hoping to start using high-NA with their 14A process in 2026. Obviously with their current state that 2026 deadline might get pushed further.

654wak654··on TSMC unveils 1.6nm process technology with backside power delivery
Sounds like a response to Intel's 18A process [0], which is also coming in 2026.

654wak654··on Boeing CEO Calhoun to step down at end of 2024
Probably still wants his fat end of the year bonus.
654wak654··on Ukraine open sourced it's star government services app
Is all software developed for every democratic government open source? Weird take to call it illegal. They only got this system up a couple years ago, and they've been dealing with an invasion for the last 2 years.
654wak654··on Tor's new WebTunnel bridges mimic HTTPS traffic to evade censorship
I like your funny words magic man.
654wak654··on Automakers are sharing consumers' driving behavior with insurance companies
Imagine a scenario where bunch of those animals brake check you, and then your insurance company calls you up and says "Hey jgalt212, we're seeing that you your forward collion avoidance system got activated too many times this year. We're going to flag you as a tailgater and up your premium by %80. Have a lovely day."
654wak654··on Automakers are sharing consumers' driving behavior with insurance companies
Could've just been "inflation" (read: Opportunity to jack up prices) too. Although if one car company is going to be on the bleeding edge of data collection & sharing it'd probably be Tesla. They're the most Silicon Valley of all.
654wak654··on Automakers are sharing consumers' driving behavior with insurance companies
Making it easier to determine who's at fault in cases like you mentioned would involve more sensors, radars, cameras etc. So we either 1984-ify everyones car or we just don't do any monitoring at all (since half-assing it can lead to false positives). I have a feeling insurance companies (and therefore governments) will slide more towards the 1984 side to save a couple dollars.
654wak654··on Show HN: NeedleDrop – Guess the movie from a song
You can also consider moving to Cloudflare R2 for hosting media [1]. Egress traffic is probably going to be your biggest cost in S3.

654wak654··on Pql, a pipelined query language that compiles to SQL
Reminds me of this classic: https://xkcd.com/927/
654wak654··on Making a PDF that's larger than Germany
PDFs have physical dimensions in them (I think most document formats do), so you can literally define a square of 5x5cm in the document for example.
654wak654··on Show HN: GodotOS – Fake operating system interface made in the Godot engine
Some quick googling tells me Godot doesn't have native tray icons/notifications support or access to peripherals like webcams & printers. Buut if you're using Godot over electron/flutter/QT your app is probably focusing on 3D / physics topics. You can implement plugins for those other niche desktop features as you need them.
654wak654··on Show HN: GodotOS – Fake operating system interface made in the Godot engine
You can disable a lot of Godot's features when building the engine from source [1]. Not sure how much you can save while keeping most of the 2d/3d components, but it should be possible.

654wak654··on Raspberry Pi 5
You can also buy mainboards[1] and expansion cards[2] (usb-c, hdmi etc.) from the same website. Depending on how beefy of a computer you want there are mainboards from 299 USD to 700 USD. So for ~500 USD you can get a very powerful tiny-ish computer. It obviously won't have the IO capabilities of pi-like hobby boards but it'll function great as a thin client for running linux / home automation stuff.
