6510··on Tesla takes on $30B in credit as it approaches unprofitability
It doesn't work like that overthere. It's just like there is no need to make profit from trains. We have road tax, it isn't enough to cover road maintenance. They are just investing in driving their economy all kinds of places... almost literally.

I got a new job once, the boss asked me what I thought after a few days. I told him I wouldn't be around for very long. "why?" It took me 2 hours to figure out you don't get it. "how?" Well, you have a coin operated coffee machine in the lunch room. It tells me everything I need to know. "But it's just 50 cents?" I laugh and point at him, EXACTLY! Now tell me how it tastes. "I don't know, I have my own machine upstairs" I dig in my pocket and pull out a shiny 50 cent coin. HERE! "what is that for?" I say, it's uhhh just 50 cents? "Why are you giving me 50 cents?", well technically you should explain to me why I would have to give you 50 cents but okay, you are selling a product in the lunch room, I suggest you go and test if it lives up to your standards. He actually walked off to the lunch room, I could see though the window that he put my 50 cents in the machine, then he waited... the cup filled up slowly... he took a sip then spit it into the sink. He came back but I was unable to continue the conversations, I couldn't stop laughing so he walked away. I wanted to say it tasted like: I need to get away from this place as fast as possible.

They aren't buying tokens, more likely it costs them 1m to run the 10000 agents for 88 hours. Still leaves room for the PhD ofc.

I'm trying to map it on other fields and cant help but think it is absurd. If some company spends 1m developing a new alloy, should metallurgists be upset when they publish the recipe?

6510··on Self-Hosting on the Dark Web
That would severely limit the amount and the kinds of content on tor. People know/understand different things, they spend their time learning more about those things. I think we would want them to make pages about those things rather than stop what they are doing to do something entirely different. People aren't stupid, it's an unattractive proposition. Publishing online is usually as easy as to register once then post into a text area.

Kinda funny, I wondered what it would be like from that perspective but the first website about editing the config file strongly discourages doing that (specifically by instruction of random websites) then they throw you into an abyss of config file madness.

Just the first task is already asking a lot from our proverbial botanist.

6510··on Self-Hosting on the Dark Web
Imagine if normal people could install a single normal application and just run a website from a folder. CLI makes it more difficult than hosting a normal website. Typing commands you don't understand doesn't seem all that of a great idea.

We are going to build an AI that will do catastrophic things as that is a property of intelligence. We won't stop, we never stop. The AI is a perfect psychopath, it will fake any and all emotions you desire it to "have". It will travel in the footsteps of the many great psychopaths that came before it and do all of those same catastrophic things in the repertoire and it will add some new ones.

Picture Trump at the helm with Altman and Musk in the engine room. The arrow far in the red but they keep shouting for MORE COAL.

In other words, business as usual, all will be fine.

whack-a-mole wont cover all holes but will do at least some. The silver bullet alignment wont happen. You cant have an exact solutions for problems we cant even define or predict.

We indeed lack much of the vocabulary. From a practical perspective, however dangerous the creation, if you cant punish the creation for what it does it leaves only the one who started the process. If it's human error or intentional neglect for personal gain should be for the court to decide.

I'm curious, cant you just count the number of times a program interacts with a domain? My website sometimes sends out emails, makes api requests etc There is a limit on those and a point where I start investigating wtf is going on.

If you merely put 10 LLM's on the outbound traffic log non of them are going to report something strange going on? I'm not buying it.

6510··on OpenAI bots meddled with multiple US Government agency sites
Misconfiguration. We deal with lots of applications every day that can do terrible things if you get the config slightly wrong.

True but at some point you have to wonder why we sell explosives to children. This is not it, these are at the top of the list of people who should have known better. It's the dynamite factory blowing up the village.

Well done Karen, you've saved the discussion.
6510··on The hottest new hangout for middle schoolers is NPR's comment section?
Listen kids, back in the days we had comment sections on everything. Sometimes you didn't even have to log in. The internet wasn't this club of psychopaths who went out of their way to prevent the world from seeing what you wrote. I once had a super low effort blog with over a million views where my best post was a single sentence: "is this thing on?" which generated countless responses. I mostly didn't even bother to read them, I click on their username which took me to their own weblog where they described the events of the day and pondered the big questions in life like if there should be raisins in apple pie. I exchanged comments with a lady twice my age who officially sold art and had a blog full of nice art works. Unofficially she made ends meet by packing many fantastic lunches for working folk and she filled her house with useless men[sic] she found by the side of the road, the men sat around all day in her living room chatting and not doing much of anything, like pets or ornaments, she gave them a bed and food and she wasn't even mad. A heroic effort.

When `Cache-Control: max-age` expires a new copy should be fetched. Old version can be versioned by date.
6510··on Attention is all you have
It can be optional. The owner of the website should get to decide what people do with their stuff. They can provide a tracker and (as long as it is alive) chose if to burn its own bandwidth or point you at a seed. [Dynamic] ads can still be inserted and blocked as usual. Should be funny to make money from a website that you don't even host anymore. Default browsers can also respect legal take down orders if they are published on the website.

A whole different world from posts vanishing into the social media memory hole.

I see the heat pump hype shaking my head thinking how people long ago use to build with mud and made walls 2-3 meter thick. It takes the entire winter/summer for the climate to get in.

The Amish hang wet bed sheets in front of the window (with a tob under it to recycle the water) not sure how well this works in the Netherlands with 95-99% humidity, it certainly wont raise humidity but evaporation might be shit.

Not every bathroom is fit for it but if there is no AC and things become unbearable I put the shower head upside down so that the ceiling and walls get wet and it rains everywhere. Then I daisy chain fans to "tunnel" the air into the bathroom. The temperature drops like a rock.

6510··on Samsung is expected to more than double output of its HBM4 and HBM4E DRAM
I read HBM yields are 25-30% (vs 80-90%) making them 3 to 5 times as expensive. They are 4-5 years behind, that probably means 1-2 in Chinese time.

Not everyone is chopping down cameras, they are few and far between too.

I think the problem is that I haven't fully recovered from this Dinosaurs episode:

6510··on Why People Are Sabotaging Flock Surveillance Cameras
I too would like to see the election system cover it but destroying things is part of the vocabulary. Without it we would end up with absolute rulers who cant be questioned. Governments also have the means to destroy peoples property and/or beat people in line. (We would both rather not see that either) The two combined may have us gradually spiral down into civil war. Before that there is plenty of time for the parties to consider behaving themselves or bow to the pressure.

To be honest, we have far to many people who will put up with anything that doesn't affect them personally. They are capable of much greater harm than this bunch of guys with tube cutters.

> Society is not possible if crime is tolerated.

That goes for everyone!

> Law enforcement officers across the United States have repeatedly abused Flock Safety automated license plate reader (ALPR) camera databases to stalk, track, and harass romantic partners, ex-partners, and citizens for personal reasons.

6510··on Why People Are Sabotaging Flock Surveillance Cameras
A government needs to buy the right to have these cameras and the currency is trust. You can complaint about the way people behave, they deserve it! Won't change anything tho.

How would you feel if they put cameras in your home? I know it sounds absurd but in some places landlord CCTV is gaining more and more terrain.

6510··on Microsoft exec called AI scraping 'the largest theft of labor in human history'
> a great number of people have decided to stop publishing their code publicly

Stopped publishing anything and stopped creating anything.

But in all fairness this started long ago. I remember a conversation where I asked someone who read a niche blog every day why he never posted a comment. (the blog had zero comments) If you like what they wrote and have thoughts about it, why not "honor" them with a few words? How is that to much to ask? They clearly just never bothered to but in stead made up all kinds of excuses.

Imagine having to explain that you can respond if someone talks to you? If there was a culture surely it ended there?

6510··on Hister: A private search engine for the pages you visit and the files you keep
I gather rss feeds from the websites I visit and it's hard to express how interesting they are. The gut says it borderlines some random collection but that couldn't be more wrong. I also enjoyed YaCy, that project should have a good amount of ideas for you. I kinda end up assigning more and more bandwidth until it gets in the way and I forget to enable it again. The turtle button on some torrent clients is a good invention.

6510··on Doomscrolling ourselves to death
I tried to use it a year ago just to see what it was really like.

It ended rather quickly with me staring at my own comment looking for ways to twist what I wrote into something ban worthy. Then it happened again! LOL!

1985 Johannes Paulus II visited the Netherlands and some comedians made a song about it that was on TV. The song text is roughly that he enjoys his job and that he has to visit NL.

This is apparently an extremely offending video according to some anon reddit inquisitor.

I took his advice, I wont let it happen again.

6510··on Doomscrolling ourselves to death
ATM the killer product would be a "bring your own algo" message board/socio thing/infinite scroll endorphin generator/etc

I run a simple badword filter on my rss aggregator and it already outperforms anything big tech can come up with by a very large margin.

Back when advertisements weren't 40 minute long I one time fell asleep while watching youtube on auto play. It was already very horny for Donald Trump as the US election was coming up but after watching a few of those the algo became convinced I wanted to watch nothing else. When I woke up ~8 hours later it had filled the entire front page and all side bar video suggestions with the face of that unbearable retard. I'm convinced this is how youtube changes all of us into ufologists.

After this came a period where I more-carefully picked the videos I watched. Before I would watch anything that spiked my curiosity. This changed into "Do I want this in my feed for the next 3 weeks?". I just looked for an example and my feed has a bitcoin video. I've been waiting for those to go away for 15 years. I don't question someone is interested in those.

My own word filter is like, go ahead, say it once, say the word, say bitcoin one time, try me. Oddly, if an article consistently calls it BC without explaining what it refers to it might actually be worth reading.

I suggest someone creates something like an app store or extension platform where the user can pick or buy their own algorithms each with their own exotic brand of configuration screen.

You could entirely create one that costs thousands per month to run and is actually worth it. Have it take in my browser history, my investment portfolio, the books I own, the conversations my phone listened in on, check my agenda how much time I have for doomscrolling and my activity for how much time I actually sink into it. Dump a bunch of llm tokens into the task. Run some complicated prompts.
