40yearoldman··on Finland provides housing and counseling to the homeless (2020)
I can go see the the homeless. Pets are not keeping the masses of homeless out of shelters.

Not being able to take drugs when ever the hell they feel like it is what keeps them out.

The only thing that will fix this is if we change the laws. And those laws are going to feel weird at first. But we need to classify people who are homeless for more than 6 weeks as mentally ill. And at that point we force them into rehab facilities.

40yearoldman··on As wildfires spread, Canadian leaders ask Meta to reverse its news ban
‘ “What Meta is doing currently is unacceptable,” said Pablo Rodriguez’

Maybe Should have thought about that before passing a law that made no sense…

I am sure Facebook would gladly enable link sharing of news articles if the laws were put back.

You can’t force somebody to do something that will cost them money.

Meta called your bluff and you are just mad.

40yearoldman··on Cruise agrees to reduce driverless car fleet in San Francisco after crash
This would essentially mean the rich are the only who can drive.

Is it? Maybe insane in a bad way.

Right click on windows desktop had what now 3 different menus that might show depending on what you want to do. Oh. And let’s not talk about how much of what you see just covers the stuff up from 1998. Still rendering the old stuff only to have a slightly larger menu render right on top of it.

This attitude is the attitude that kills movements like this. You sounds like a crazy guy on the street yelling about Jesus.

Languages and English is hard. So asking clear questions is important. Proof is in this conversation. As you seem to have suggested so much from so few words.

It devolved, because it went from what looked like a structured question with a finite expcted result, "Name the most common data structures" , to something more loose, a list of structures, any structures.

Further more, we agree, the candidate was trash, and I don't think the wording would have helped. But I do think a more precise question, or maybe a less loaded, or bias inducing question of "name some data structures". Namely, because "common" is subjective as I pointed out. If you are writing lisp all day, well, list are your most common. If you happen to be in assembly then registers are. So to be a better interviewer you don't want to taint the question with your notions.

40yearoldman··on My $0->$100M->$0 in 5 years story
I think the part of the question that throws people is “most common”. It begins to sounds like a trick question, because it hat is the most common? Its going to very from code base to code base.

Maybe id the question was name 3 data structures, any 3 it might sit well.

But even so. The question did devolve into list of things somebody should know as a ex developer.

40yearoldman··on NixOS RFC 136 approved: A plan to stabilize the new CLI and Flakes incrementally
Make sure you use copy-closure and target the result directory. My fist attempts had some crazy find script copying all of nix-store with copy-closure. You can skip this part if you make the build machine the same as the cache machine as the results are automatically cached.

What? I compile my arm64 system on a amd64 system and send them to my cache server so my arm systems don’t have to do the work and just download the outputs and apply them.
40yearoldman··on Greed and Excess Drive the Climate Crisis, So Why Aren’t They Being Questioned?
Life is sane. People are living longer than they ever did in history, most live better than kings of the past. Must of history lived in horrid conditions, so I don't think this outcome is all that bad.

Yet sane life here with flushable toilets, antibiotics, and global communications, is something we should avoid...

None of these can be had without the infrastructure we have built. None of the advances in the human collective knowledge could have happened. We know this because we can look back in history and see how long humans clanked rocks together and yelled at the sky above for rain.

Only a fool would suggest we should have avoided this outcome, all while typing on a keyboard connected to the most advanced thing humans had ever made.

40yearoldman··on Greed and Excess Drive the Climate Crisis, So Why Aren’t They Being Questioned?
Okay neo-matrix post modernist. Nobody is talking about power. The fact you have even brought a power dynamic into this shows exactly who you are. What is worse is you don’t even properly understand the power manic beteeen the masses and the world.

The masses are the post poweful group in the world. They set the pace for everybody else.

40yearoldman··on Big Tech's Takeover and Destruction of Open Protocols and Networks
It’s not even worth trying with these climate people. They are a cult who can’t see facts that don’t support their arguments.

Bitcoin uses electricity, yes. But it is far more efficient than the global banking system. People forget that buildings cost, infrastructure to those building cost, the people needed to run banks cost, and yes the masses amount of computing the banking industry cost. The energy used just by the cars on the employees to the banking system probably dwarfs the total energy use of Bitcoin. (Car production plus electricity or gas)

The issue with Bitcoin is it is easy to reason about its energy usage, while the “banking systems” is so nebulous it’s hard to think about the total resources it needs to exist and run. Ans the climate folks have hyper focus or perhaps tiny brains that can’t handle much more than a child’s approach to reasoning.

Wow. Another story teller. There was no finger pointing, I did not blame anybody. I simply pointed out the hat the target complaint, if resolved would not change anything.

If you took every yacht away. Nothing about climate would change.

Your response reeks of emotional bias. Please try again.

40yearoldman··on The Secretive World of Penile Enlargement
I did not conflate. Outright told you that your assumptions that these things are mutable are wrong.

You sound just like an anti trans or old school gay hater.

Things you think are choices or are “developed” may just be things that are the way they are. Why do some people like blue and others purple.

You are outright putting your desires as normal and others as not.

You are a penis bigot at worse, or misinformed at best. Take some time to understand you are one person and not representative of all and what is normal for you may not be normal for others.

40yearoldman··on The Secretive World of Penile Enlargement
I don’t know what you think a life coach does. But one that solves their own problems and is happy is probably a good one.

I think one thing we have leaned over time is it is not always possible to change how one thinks.

For example. Some men like women, and do not find other men attractive at all. No amount of conditioning may change this. Or even something as simple as eating, an urge so strong that reasoning about it id nearly impossible.

What if this man had the same feeling about penis size as other men about desiring women?

Of. Note. I have never desired a larger penis, but worried it was smaller than desired by the opposite sex. When thinking about it, I prefer the size I am, as a the large floppy ones look like they get the way of normal day to day interactions.

40yearoldman··on US smartphone shipments fall sharply, but Android more than iPhone
Probably because when they buy something they want it to work.

I was a die hard android fan boy. Owned nearly all android flagships.

I first was driven away from the Google branded phones because it was clear their priorities where something other than providing me the best hardware and software experience.

Then I was driven away from Samsung because too much bloat and advertisements within the core OS.

None is the home integration worked right. Too fractured and error prone.

I got tied of seeing people use their iPhones to get shit done and not needing to tinker heir damn phone all the time.

The iPhone is a tool. A well thought out tool that gets the fuxk out of my way so I can do the things I want. Android. IRS a toy. It’s an advertisement delivery vehicle. On Android you are the customer not the user.

40yearoldman··on Amazon to force 'voluntary resignation' on workers who don't relocate
What is fair?

Last I checked most Amazon engineers make 400k+.

40yearoldman··on Amazon to force 'voluntary resignation' on workers who don't relocate
Nothing insane. Its insane to expect a specific company to change its policies for your preferences.

The way it is now some companies are remote others are not. They have different benefits. But what you want to do is strong arm everybody to do it your way.

Some of us don’t want to work remote and don’t want to deal with those who do work remote.

The way it is now allows me to work at companies that don’t offer remote and for you to work at companies that do offer remote.

People demanding remote work by force with unions are basically the lady who wanes to apply Safeway and target coupons at Walmart.

40yearoldman··on FTC readies lawsuit that could break up Amazon
Nooooooooooo!
40yearoldman··on Amazon to force 'voluntary resignation' on workers who don't relocate
Yes. Let’s do this thing that will likely lower pay and ensure shitty engineers keep jobs they can’t do because of a horribly short sighted view that RTO is not equitable.

The issues with Unions is there appears to be no way for a company to hire non union workers. Once this happens you are basically the mob. And hold the company and other employees hostage to mob rule. Which is almost always not driven by logic.

There are enough remote jobs.

The idea that you want a specific job at a specific place to allow you to work remotely is insane. Nobody owes you shit. Either you like the terms and work there or you don’t and find another job.

40yearoldman··on New Body Cam Data Exposes the True Scale of NYPD Violence Against Protesters
I c incitement is such a bullshit thing. People with god intent can and should continue to behave civilly.

The reality is we have the pre game chat logs where people are going to protest looking for an excuse. This happens on both sides on the political coin.

40yearoldman··on New Body Cam Data Exposes the True Scale of NYPD Violence Against Protesters
lol. I guess you can’t count. It was 100s if not more looting.

Oh loon you did the same thing you complained of. “5 people looted”. 5 people is just theft.

The real issue is conflating the two groups. When somebody is saying looters they are talking about looters, not protesters. Ans when somebody is talking about protesters they are not talking about looters. No reason to ever bring up protesters when talking about rioters or looters.

That being said. We are told that white silence is violence and the lack of action makes you complicit. So if there are protest going on and under the cover of the protest some subset loot or riot then maybe the protesters should be held accountable for not stopping said bad actions?

Yah for sure. But if you are not a 10x and want to be. Then you got to prioritize what you spend your time on.
40yearoldman··on Looming demise of the 10x developer – an era of enthusiast programmers is ending
There are some in the younger generation that get it.

I had an intern last cycle that just consumed this stuff. It was like I was talking to a younger me. She knew things about the company I worked at I did not know.

Anytime I was explaining anything about how to solve problems or how something should work, she would just listen and ask good questions. Next thing you knew she was using whatever we just talked about.

40yearoldman··on Looming demise of the 10x developer – an era of enthusiast programmers is ending
Then you did not chose to be a 10x engineer. The same way you probably are only mediocre in your hobbies (unless you quit your job and focused on that only)

Don’t be sad. It’s okay that other people do something better than you. Be happy you play disc golf, but the 10x engineer makes more PRs than you. Which do you want more.

What I hear is you envy somebody else choices, and want to vilify them because you can’t compete with them because you made different life choices.

It’s like you are mad that Serena Williams did so much better than you did, but you only played tennis on the weekends with your friend.
