31carmichael··on Why So Many AI Researchers Think the Machines Could Kill Everyone
those laws are simple instructions made to a robot. the instructions given to AI models are complicated and numerous. It might be the case that you could bake, "and by the way, don't hurt any humans" into the instructions, but it is already way beyond the idealistic three laws, as you mention.
31carmichael··on AirPods 5
you're mistaken. Only proper blood diamond coated connectors increase the sound quality. lab grown with the same chemical and physical properties doesn't work.
31carmichael··on AirPods 5
i wonder if you've ever tried them. I'm concerned about audio quality and never thought to use airpods since I assumed they'd fall out when i was hiking. My gf bought me the last version of the airpods pro and they sound excellent. and they've never fallen out of my ears during normal movement like i assumed they might.

31carmichael··on Ticker: Don't die of heart disease
You right. You don't need statins. Nobody does. But look at the statistics. You might also drop dead tomorrow. It's hard to know. If you think eating and exercising would solve heart disease, you are mis-informed. It's the number one killer. If we all died at 30, the drugs would not need to exist. I'm sure you would like to live as long as you can. Taking statins is cheap and simple for most people.
31carmichael··on Ticker: Don't die of heart disease
I recommend the same. There are other interventions, but these two medications are straightforward to obtain with low or no side effects.
31carmichael··on Ticker: Don't die of heart disease
You can only do things to reduce your risk. And whatever intervention would be based on overall population statistics, since it's difficult to know your own personal risk. Heart disease kills marathon runners. You can't just "fix it". Someone who has naturally high cholesterol won't magically be okay by changing their lifestyle and diet.
31carmichael··on What brain surgery taught me about the fragile gift of consciousness
"You have no conscious experience or memory of the moment when you go under and your consciousness is severed."

They started to lube me up for a colonoscopy before I was completely under. I 100% remember that and told them to give me a few more seconds.

31carmichael··on The End of Handwriting
I have a corporation in Japan, and I have a set of fancy old-school stamps.
31carmichael··on The End of Handwriting
I agree, and my handwriting also sucks. My brother could have been an architect; his handwriting is amazing without trying. Give me a keyboard and recess too.

My grandmother wrote me letters in cursive. They got more and more unreadable as she got older. I should have bought her a typewriter.

31carmichael··on Men paying thousands for leg lengthening surgery
I got my arms broken to make them longer. This is not as common, but something I wanted to achieve. Now they are extra-long and look a bit funny, but I'm happy.
