3131s··on Decline of Global Extreme Poverty Continues but Has Slowed
Without knowing if that's the case, these metrics are definitely easy to manipulate. For example in calculating purchasing power parity, the "basket" of items you choose can significantly misrepresent the common, basic needs of people in poor countries. And it should be remembered that the World Bank's global poverty line is only 1.90$ a day.

Based on my own experience of living in a poor neighborhood in a very poor country for a long time now, I am always skeptical of these claims for reasons that would be too long to list out. Inflation and increases in the cost of food and rent here have far outpaced the World Bank metrics ($1.25 in 2005, $1.90 as of 2015) and the incomes of the average person (~$100-150 a month).

3131s··on Progress update from the Librem 5 hardware department
I thought that was odd too. There is one instance of the word "ethical" in an otherwise technical article and it's hardly egregious compared to the marketing speech of nearly big tech company:

> We will continue to evolve as we understand better how this subset of the industry works. The success of our phone is critical, as it will provide us with the legitimacy and leverage we need to bend hardware suppliers to our way of thinking by showing them that we have the potential to be market leaders with ethical products that respect users.

3131s··on Pipewalker (puzzle game)
This is also available in most Linux repositories if you don't want to download anything from Sourceforge. It's one of those games that is simple to learn but has a lot of depth.
3131s··on Basic Income caused crime to drop by 40% and strengthened workforce?
Why exactly do you think this would happen? It doesn't actually make sense. Let's say Company A charges 2$ for an apple and each apple costs 1$ to procure, and then at some point a UBI is implemented. What changed that suddenly allows company A to raise the price of an apple without being undercut by Company B? The cost to procure an apple might increase somewhat because laborers have more leverage under a UBI, but there's an upper limit to this with automation anyway. A more equal distribution of wealth in itself will not cause any increase in the cost of goods.

- Tony Blair
3131s··on Some suddenly become accomplished artists or musicians with no previous training
> 10.5 over 100m

I can run a 10.5 after a lot of training, so maybe it's my ego talking here, but I refuse to believe this! I think you must just not have been aware of the training this person did. If they could really run a 10.5 in high school with no training, then with minimal effort they could bring their time down enough to qualify for most any country's Olympic team. A 10.5 100m is good enough to win the high school state tournament in an average US state.

> From time to time we would have some new guy come who clearly didn't know anything about boxing or fighting. But within weeks he would learn and get better than almost anyone else in the gym. He would be faster and punch harder.

These people must have had prior training in other sports. Once you've done strength, agility and speed training and have good coordination, it's easy to pick up another sport.

3131s··on The hotel bathroom puzzle
> What if the high humidity of the bathroom causes the leather strap to break at an inopportune time?

I doubt that would happen, but use something other than leather?

> What happens if the strap gets misplaced or stolen?

Replace it?

3131s··on The F-35 Is a $1.4 Trillion National Disaster
No source on that figure whatsoever? Given that OECD countries spend on average about 9% of GDP on healthcare and that US GDP is 21 trillion, your estimate seems 2x too high.
3131s··on Booze, Sex, and the Dark Art of Dealmaking in China (2015)
Totally. My dad worked in sales at IBM and it seemed like a regular occurrence to take clients to strip clubs. This all happened on huge 10-100+ million dollar contracts and of course was all charged to the company credit card.
3131s··on Juggalos figured out how to beat facial recognition
Denmark did this recently with any type of face-covering, and judging by how Reddit gushed over the decision it should be no trouble to enact similar legislation elsewhere:

3131s··on An Extremely Consequential Supreme Court Decision Slipped Under the Radar
What I understood as the significance of this ruling is that it establishes a different precedent for companies that are considered to participate in "two-sided markets" in relation to anti-trust law.

I would be curious to hear some commentary on the interview below that discusses this ruling, maybe it would have made for a better submission:

3131s··on How a Diablo expansion led to behind-the-scenes trouble
> Plus it came out when I was 10 years old

I was 9. It's one of my favorite games ever. I lost interest in D2 pretty quickly, but I still come back to D1 every few years. I made my wife play it too and after about an hour she was hooked and became inseparable from the computer until beating the game a week or two later.

3131s··on Sphericons (2006)
It's been interesting watching the upvote count on this. I was the first upvote, then later on once it had fallen off the first page of /newest it still only had a few upvotes and I assumed it would die. Now after the mod intervention it's been hanging around the second and third page of /news for the last day and to my surprise has 37 points.

Since browsing /newest a lot more in the past few months, I've noticed how a single person can have an outsized impact on the visibility of submissions. The first upvote is really crucial, it seems people tend to notice anything with "2 points" or above and then with only a few more upvotes in quick succession a submission will start to get visiblity on /news. One morning a few weeks ago I cast the first upvotes on two separate submissions, and then later in the day both made it to the front page.

3131s··on Sphericons (2006)
Wow! This is one of those tiny corners of the internet that embodies a certain mystique, like the feeling of stumbling across hidden treasure. I have nothing to add other than to encourage others to check out the visualizations of these weird polyhedra, and that it looks like the author has a lot of other cool work on the page linked at the bottom:

3131s··on A closer look at Google Duplex
> Because people will hang up on it like they do all other robocalls

A business that is essentially closing a sale with customers? No way, the call might not be from a real human but the money that the reservation will bring in is no different than any other.

3131s··on Powerful, cheap and Cambodian: Computer dreams being born in the kingdom
I guess it's running Linux? I had never heard of this, maybe because I never go to any of those co-working spaces.

There is a lot of interest among young Cambodians in programming and new technology, though unfortunately the corporate tech world here is stuck using old, proprietary tools. The average salary for a web developer / programmer at a Cambodian company is somewhere in the range $400-$1000. A couple friends of mine with better English speaking ability have gone freelance and had success though.

Some of these dinosaur Cambodian tech companies will also advertise programmer job postings as 'male only'.

3131s··on JavaScript: Does It Mutate?
That's my feeling too, would rather not have to trust myself to remember any of this.

Or Lodash-FP...

3131s··on Ethical Considerations of Working at a Military Defense Company
To start, consider not thinking in terms of it being a "defense" company.

> If you were chosen to be on the Manhatten project and opted not to join, the bombs still would have been made. People still would have died. YOU are not integral to anything that happens afterward. If the government wants something, they will get it with or without you.

Oh wow, no one has ever heard / refuted that totally novel argument before!

3131s··on Linode Fremont servers are down
Nice, mine are back too.
3131s··on Linode Fremont servers are down
Yeah, I am getting hit by this too. I still want to support Linode but can't if this is going to be a regular occurrence. How long ago was the last outage?
3131s··on The Dark Side of the Orgasmic Meditation Company
The broader context for those that haven't read the (interesting) article is that the sexual stimulation occurs in a room full of people, which is fine too of course. The creepiness sets in for reasons beyond that.

Not a puritan, but I got a kick out of this line from the article:

"According to the story she repeats onstage and in YouTube videos, Daedone founded OneTaste in 2004 after she met a monk at a party who showed her a version of the technique she developed into OM."

3131s··on Canada legalises recreational cannabis use
For an ounce though? I picked that amount because it's not a lot, but it is generally considered to be more than a "personal use" amount.

You're best bet in the US getting caught with that much or more is to just get robbed by the cops, which actually happens all the time.

3131s··on Canada legalises recreational cannabis use
> things like cannabis are entirely domestic

Not true at all.

3131s··on Canada legalises recreational cannabis use
> vary wildly between countries

Not really, name a European country where I won't be jailed for having even an ounce of cocaine? Portugal is as close as it gets to sensible drug policy, and they've only decriminalized (as opposed to legalized) small personal-use amounts.

The only drugs that should be regulated are antibiotics :)

3131s··on Anti-Salt Narrative Needs a Shakeup
Dan Green and Stan Efferding both take steroids though (or at least Stan did at one time), and they weigh a ton. Not sure anything that applies to them would apply to most anyone else. It's probably best not to glean health tips from powerlifters in general...
3131s··on US Expected to Withdraw from UN Human Rights Council
Correct, a sizable number of these lunatic US neocons support Israel because they believe that once all the Jews are gathered there, a holy war will begin in which Jews and Muslims will obliterate each other and Jesus will come take all the Christians to heaven. But the ones that aren't totally insane just support Israel because of its geopolitical significance.
3131s··on Psychedelics could heal brain cells in people suffering from depression: study
Well, just don't get lost. I've taken LSD hundreds of times and the worst was undoubtedly in nature (it was my fault, but I'm sure I'm not the first to make this mistake). I've done it plenty of times at house parties and it's been fine. My objection to a "clinical setting" is being alone with someone you don't know that well, and like you said, being confined and expected / forced to stay with that person.
3131s··on Psychedelics could heal brain cells in people suffering from depression: study
A clinical setting sounds like a total nightmare when using psychedelics.
