2h··on Let the internet be grimy
> Every road in the world does not need to be the Autobahn.

the point is, currently NO ROAD is the Autobahn. thats not a balance, thats censorship.

2h··on Mozilla ending support for Windows 7
> settings

is this a joke? ever tried user management with Windows 10/11? its a hellscape of clicking through the Control Panel, the Settings app, and countless crosslinked pages with no rhyme or reason. same for microphone levels. same for device management.

2h··on Mozilla ending support for Windows 7
why should Mozilla let Microsoft or anyone else dictate what they support?

I agree that Windows 7 should be dropped, but only because its quite old, not because Microsoft has dropped support for it. Frankly Windows 7 is better than Windows 11, I think many would agree with that.

2h··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
follow your own advice
2h··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
at the moment the problem is with you.
2h··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
because we aren't talking about candy here. we are talking about purchases that are hundreds or thousands of dollars. and people are normalizing making these purchases yearly. sure if you're dumb and rich go ahead buy what you want. but the culture pushes this mindset on people who cant afford it as well.

unless you have the money to blow, then having critical thinking is an important skill. to ask yourself "is this a waste of money?", "should I really be buying one of these every year?"

2h··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
you seem to keep ignoring this key word:

mindlessly

2h··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
> whats the complaint here

Its dont mindlessly buy any new thing Apple puts out

2h··on I stopped buying new laptops (2020)
> I keep hearing this argument for not buying a new laptop every year and it just doesn’t hold water. I say buy the latest MacBook, expense it, factor it in as a monthly cost.

this is why Apple is a trillion dollar company. because people mindlessly buy any new thing they put out, regardless if it makes sense or not.

seeing that freaks face made me physically shudder. If they were smart they would distance this product from him as much as possible. it should be painfully obvious that he is toxic for this and any brand.

pay him whatever, let him stay in charge, but please for the love of god STOP PUTTING him as the face of anything.

2h··on Beautifying our UI: Giving Gitlab build features a fresh look
all I want, is the number of contributions in the last year, like GitHub has:

https://gitlab.com/gitlab-org/gitlab/-/issues/22578

its just one number, I just wish they could add this one little thing so I could move away from GitHub once and for all. even CodeBerg has it:

2h··on Why yewtu.be was down: Data loss after being shut down by Oracle Cloud
nope. normal, run of the mill Bank of America Visa debit.
2h··on Google and HTTP (2018)
dudes shitty website wont even load unless you allow JavaScript from these domains:

    fargo.io
    scripting.com
2h··on Why yewtu.be was down: Data loss after being shut down by Oracle Cloud
I tried signing up for Oracle Cloud and got the below message. After that I took the exact same card and signed up with 4 other providers. Fuck you Oracle.

> Error processing transaction

> We're unable to complete your sign up. Common sign up errors are due to: (a) Using prepaid cards. Oracle only accepts credit card and debit cards (b) Intentionally or unintentionally masking one's location or identity

2h··on C’s Biggest Mistake (2009)
this ignores the fact that strings can contain a null character. for example, this is a valid Go program:

    package main

    import "fmt"

    func main() {
       fmt.Printf("%q\n", "hello \x00 world")
    }
2h··on C’s Biggest Mistake (2009)
because its ugly:

    package hello

    func good() (int, error) {
     return 0, nil
    }

    func bad() *struct {
     int
     error
    } {
     return nil
    }
2h··on Disabled at 22 million commits
I dont think that works:

    > git clone --depth 1 https://github.com/MicrosoftDocs/azure-docs
    Cloning into 'azure-docs'...
    remote: Enumerating objects: 107158, done.
    remote: Counting objects: 100% (107158/107158), done.
    remote: Compressing objects: 100% (101843/101843), done.
    Receiving objects:  17% (18217/107158), 780.25 MiB | 43.72 MiB/s
2h··on Disabled at 22 million commits
because he is pushing the limits of a public service thats used by millions of people every day. the BEST CASE is basically what happened, GitHub finds out and disables the repo. worst case is he takes down the entire GitHub site and gets permanently banned.

dont fuck with shit I use.

2h··on C’s Biggest Mistake (2009)
Go did fix the C mistake:

    package main

    func foo(a []byte) {
       println(len(a))
    }

    func main() {
       var b []byte
       // cannot use &b (value of type *[]byte) as []byte value in argument to foo
       foo(&b)
    }

I agree, their actions are totally justified. lets just instantly ban these accounts without even a warning email. great idea.

Dallas here.

Usually "summer" lasts May through October, with July August being the worst of it. here is the high for the next 10 days:

2h··on Show HN: WinGPT – AI assistant for Windows 3.1
I am not installing Linux and Wine just to run a Windows program. 64-bit CPUs have been available for PCs for at least 20 years. while this is a neat idea, omitting 64-bit support makes this nothing more than a fun experiment.
2h··on Show HN: WinGPT – AI assistant for Windows 3.1
