2four2··on Tiny number of 'supersharers' spread the majority of fake news
Strange agenda here. This conversation isn't about those things, and isn't about censorship.
2four2··on 60 kHz (2022)
There are several of these stations, they are maintained and operated by NIST. Two of them were almost shut down recently due to budget concerns:

2four2··on Global tourism is booming. These people would rather it wasn't
Short term rentals have really made the housing crisis worse. I have boycotted them entirely, but it's a drop in the ocean.
2four2··on BestBuy set for 10th straight quarter of sales drop on weak electronics spending
> Some value for people that like to look at the product, have it in their hands, etc...

I've resorted to buying online and returning good if I don't like them. Most returns are free and even the whole process is less effort than driving to the store, searching, and waiting in line, then driving home

2four2··on Priced out of home ownership
I think you mean business loans like PPP, not student loans.
2four2··on What happens in the brain to cause depression?
Digital devices can absolutely intermittently function if voltages are outside a stable range in certain places. The point was that if you encounter frequent abnormal errors with your computer, you rarely begin with boosting every one of the DRAM, core, and other miscellaneous voltages.
2four2··on Microsoft Paint's new AI image generator builds on your brushstrokes
Installer should install programs without your input, and Settings should change your settings! Oh wait
2four2··on Physicists now question the fate of the Universe
No one is claiming that their speculative models and hypotheses are "truth". Before sufficient evidence is available, you start with a model and a hypothesis, which drives the search for evidence. Then it becomes falsifiable once you gather the evidence. I think you may have missed the explanation of science where the first step is to create a guess and that drives your experiments.

As far as "not affecting your quality of life at all", people have been saying this about cutting edge science since forever. "Time can't be relative, it's just scientists playing with math. Besides, we'll never travel fast enough for it to matter and it doesn't affect our lives anyway." Yet time dilation is an important factor in your daily life if you ever used GPS.

2four2··on Metabolism of autism reveals developmental origins
Autistic as an identity and autism as a disease are different things that are difficult to uncouple. Similarly to obesity, it's difficult to talk about the health aspect without people being sensitive about the identity aspect. I find it's useful when reading about research to empathize with the authors and realize their work is an attempt to be constructive instead of providing social commentary.
2four2··on Metabolism of autism reveals developmental origins
Lots of carbs make me fall asleep and kill my motivation. My lunches at work are light and carb-free for that reason.
2four2··on Metabolism of autism reveals developmental origins
I think most people understand that disease nomenclature changes rapidly. Even if the word "autism" is deprecated in the future and replaced by a litany of other terms for conditions, the research is still useful and interesting.
2four2··on The world has probably passed peak pollution
The growth in power of megacorporations has been coined a new type of feudalism, so dark ages might not be a bad description.
2four2··on Small Things
When you put it this way, it seems more reasonable. Obviously you shouldn't reward or validate tantrums. At the same time, however, empathy is an easy way to acknowledge misplaced emotional reactions without encouraging them.

Meeting a tantrum with "I know you don't like the taste of vegetables, but they're an important part of growing up and you must eat them before having sweets." is different from "In this house, you cannot cry if there's no real pain."

There's no fine line between valid responses and manipulation. For manipulators, the pain FEELS real. The pain is a part of a learned behavior. Guiding those feelings instead of making a hard rule cutoff will have better results and build better trust.

2four2··on Simplicity is an advantage but sadly complexity sells better (2022)
In physical UI our group calls this the Microwave Problem. No one uses the 20 extra buttons on the microwave, they mostly just use one or two buttons. But no one will buy a microwave with few buttons.
2four2··on Claiming high user satisfaction, IRS will decide on renewing free tax site
I didn't qualify to use the site, but it's definitely a step in the right direction. Everyone agrees that doing taxes should be free and easy, like nearly every other country...
2four2··on The Universe as a Computer
I think a device which outputs a distribution of answers is still a computer. The information is an answer and needs to be computed. Determinism and repeatability isn't a requirement for defining computation.
2four2··on Senate passes TikTok ban bill, sending it to President Biden's desk
Bit hysterical, but do you think there's actual value in keeping Tiktok around?
2four2··on UCSD announces equity-based rules for CS and other "selective majors'
I think it might be a leap to assume first gen and Pell students are low performers or likely to drop out. Is there anything to back that up? It'd be just as easy to argue that they perform better because there's more at stake compared to a student with larger social safety nets.
2four2··on UCSD announces equity-based rules for CS and other "selective majors'
I suppose this is the antithesis of "legacy schools", whose practices of prioritizing children of former students serves to maintain and preserve privilege structures instead of disrupt them.
2four2··on [dead]
It sounds like the author was burned by a private company that uses keywords and patterns to identify misinformation, instead of some nefarious government plot to spread its agenda.

Occam's razor applied here, sounds like he's blowing a simple spat with an automated corporate robot out of proportion. Advice: present the facts without the conclusions. People are capable of drawing their own conclusions, and you don't attract the bots looking for conspiracy theories if you don't use their language.

2four2··on Scientists discover first nitrogen fixing organelle
So have mass extinction events.
2four2··on Household size and the housing stock
Another point overlooked is that the main focus of the article cites fewer people per household, then discounts things like AirB&B, which directly contributes to this statistic. It seems like a casual dismissal of the statistic, painting it as simply no one having children.
2four2··on Monowheels: Vehicles with Insufficient Wheels
>With multiple wheel vehicles, if you apply the brakes to some wheels and not others, the tires lose traction.

Which vehicles don't brake on all wheels? I can only think of cruiser bicycles.

2four2··on Tesla Cybertruck's Stuck Accelerator Pedal Creates 6,800-Pound Land Missile
>how many techbros can there be for this product to break even?

The end of the article says there is a 5 year wait time for one, and close to 2 million on the wait list.

2four2··on Psychiatric risks for worsened mental health after psychedelic use
I've found this to be generally true. Engineers are passionate and intelligent people, but frequently make the mistake of thinking this means they are experts in everything.
2four2··on I am no longer attending vintage computer festivals

2four2··on A canonical Hamiltonian formulation of the Navier–Stokes problem
Digging more into other internet discussions, a lot of people disagree about the usage. Many believe it's fine to use compute as a noun since it's a truncation of compute resources or compute nodes. Seems like an industry shibboleth like how data/stats people say "data" as a countable plural.
2four2··on A canonical Hamiltonian formulation of the Navier–Stokes problem
Thank you! I always just assumed the difference was verb/noun.
2four2··on A canonical Hamiltonian formulation of the Navier–Stokes problem
Okay I gotta be honest, and maybe I'm a little ignorant, but when did we start saying compute instead of computation? I feel like I went away on vacation and missed out on an in-joke. Should I be saying compute instead?
2four2··on Home insurers are dropping customers based on aerial images
I recently started going through many big data collectors and expressing my rights to know, delete, and stop selling my information.
