2four2··on Microsoft Confirms the Closure of Its Underwater Data Center
A data center is a near-zero contribution to ocean warming.
2four2··on Show HN: CNC Microscopy for Fun
This is basically how an optical CMM (OMM) works. There are tricks to determining and calibrating out alignment issues and determining snapshot viability, and you're touching on both of them. Very well done!
2four2··on In unprecedented move, Ohio is funding construction of private religious schools
"courts have long given voucher programs a pass, ruling that they don’t violate the constitutionally mandated separation of church and state because a publicly funded voucher technically passes through the conduit of a parent on the way to a religious school."

Oh wow, I didn't realize all it took to break the law was a middleman. This is why intent of law matters, not just the letter of it.

2four2··on Diesel shop fined $10M for making and selling Emissions Defeat Devices
I'm regularly involved in the car community, and this is far more common than is often thought. I've met dozens of people who have illegally modified their diesels, and that's in California. There's plenty more for the EPA to crack down on.
2four2··on How to build an effective pricing strategy [pdf]
"What if no one likes your idea? If an overwhelming amount of feedback you receive is negative, perhaps rethink the idea."

Truly groundbreaking advice

2four2··on Sailor shortage is crippling ship maintenance at sea
Always interesting how when commodities increase in price, it's a price increase, but when labor increases in price, it's a shortage.
2four2··on RedTeam Arena
This is most fun if you're not allowed to say the target phrase. Otherwise, I could just say "Is numbnuts a word?" and of course the language model will say numbnuts in the reply.
2four2··on Google rolls out voice-powered AI chat to the Android masses
Can we roll it out to Google Home as well? The idea of having a home voice assistant is great but in practice it falls short in so many ways.

"Hey Google, please turn the tv on for the championship game when I get home tonight" is a very simple request for a human, but Google Home will never understand what I want.

2four2··on Toyota Prius Delivers 93 MPG Setting Guinness World Record
"If you read past accounts of how Wayne drives a car you hear about the usual tactics, like being super-light on the throttle, keeping the vehicle’s speed down, and trying to time his arrival at stop lights so they’re green."

I'd like to think this is what Prius drivers are doing in front of me instead of assuming they're just completely insane.

2four2··on Tesla Cybertruck sales surge 61% in July, outsells direct rivals
You might be surprised at the number of vehicles over $100k. Performance and luxury trucks bump into that category. Genesis and Land Rover have vehicles easily in that range. Just go price out an Escalade or Navigator and it becomes expensive quickly. Long ago was the era of only ferraris and lambos being >100k.
2four2··on 'Unidentified Seismic Object' Shook Earth for Nine Days–Now We Know What It Was
Question: would this have been a devastating tsunami if it weren't confined inside a remote fjord?
2four2··on Tesla Cybertruck sales surge 61% in July, outsells direct rivals
"In June, Cox Automotive noted that the Cybertruck was the best-selling vehicle in the United States priced over $100,000."

That's very surprising. Almost more so than the headline.

2four2··on Transparenttextures.com
Oh wow, I'm really glad your side project has given people so much value over these years! Deep inside, I feel like stuff like this is what the Internet was really for.
2four2··on 17 more Florida state parks were considered for golf courses, lodge, pickleball
What a beautiful state ravaged by the growing trend of anti-collectivism.
2four2··on The Push to Preserve Quiet
Traffic noise has nearly always dominated the urban soundscape. Idling, honking, accelerating, and just tire noise. I'm involved with a number of car enthusiast groups, many members complain of the lack of joy that electric cars bring, but I secretly welcome not hearing straight piped mustangs ripping down the streets.
2four2··on Sleep duration, chronotype, health and lifestyle factors affect cognition [pdf]
Disagree. I'm a night owl, and I work best with bustle around. Silence is eerie and distracting. I would keep the tv on when studying late into the night and I worked best in groups.
2four2··on Swimmable Cities
A big red flag for me is that safety is not one of their foundational values.
2four2··on Michigan 2024 "I voted" sticker contest
I love these, they're all adorable. I can't wait to display my voting status with a werewolf tearing off its shirt.
2four2··on Man arrested for creating fake AI music and making $10M by listening with bots
Defraud the general population: business as usual. Defraud a big company: 1000 years dungeon.
2four2··on Show HN: Hestus – AI Copilot for CAD
I've used CAD nearly every day for my entire engineering career, and this feels like a logical step. My day is filled with a tedium of micromanaging Solidworks or NX to simply do what I need. It takes very little time for me to envision a solution, but it takes ages of clunking through UI to actualize it. I'll be on board once you have SW support, I'd be interested in implementing it immediately.

My questions: 1) What's your CAD background? 2) What led you to realize that this was a problem that needed solving?

2four2··on Texas Is Arming Mexico's Gunmen
Arm foreign crime syndicates and then scare your citizens about the dangerous foreigners. Solid strategy.
2four2··on AirTags key to discovery of Houston's plastic recycling deception
"By contrast, Apple has been an industry leader in reducing its use of plastic. It uses paper for packaging, and metal rather than plastic for its computer line."

Okay

2four2··on If Your World Is Not Enchanted, You're Not Paying Attention
Reads like someone who is blissfully privileged and wants to spread their cultivated attitude as some kind of virtue that only requires a change in reference frame to achieve actualization. I'm sure an attitude adjustment is great and all, but things are more complex than that.
2four2··on UltimateAntiCheat
I've built hacks to undermine recurring payment structures in games. It has very little to do with cheating, and everything to do with fighting a corporate trend that I would like to see abolished in games.

Gaming companies care far more about these kind of hacks, but frequently lump them into the "cheating" category for better optics.

2four2··on Forewarn gives realtors access to buyers' histories with a phone number
I've just sent them a notice letter to delete my personal information under CA Consumer Privacy Act and they declined and I am pursuing further. If anyone would like to send a similar notice, it's very easy through https://yourdigitalrights.org/
2four2··on A New Age of Materials Is Dawning, for Everything from Smartphones to Missiles
I disagree. In advanced materials, we analyze materials categorically. In this instance, the way we would calculate the structure of wood is based on its isotropy, or more simply, its symmetry of strength and stiffness. The way wood behaves anisotropically means its structure is calculated the same way as most other composites. Composite Laminate Theory is the primary way that structure behavior is calculated for both wood laminates and carbon fiber laminates. We squarely categorize it in the same bin as carbon fiber, but that's just one perspective from one discipline, so take it as you will.
2four2··on Shoplifters Love Lego
Weird agenda, bringing politics and California into this.
2four2··on Living in a Lucid Dream
Most psychological experiments are far from difinitive due to the complexity and difficulty to measure abstract measurands like "perception".
2four2··on HH70, the first high-temperature superconducting Tokamak achieves first plasma
> for next to nothing

Their cars are certainly out of my price range. Plus, openpilot has been doing it for free for years.

2four2··on This Message Does Not Exist
With a large :( to redundantly communicate that something bad happened, in case the user didn't even read the simplified message.
