2dvisio··on Why does the New menu even exist for creating new empty files?
Reading some comments I realised I might be one of the few who _never ever_ used that functionality. I see it’s benefits for some. But always wondered about the menu estate taken away from me…
2dvisio··on Designing Synced Blocks
How different is this from the same concept in Confluence that allows you to embed pages or excerpts from other pages?
2dvisio··on Mr. Rafieh’s Tehran Pencil Shop
Lots of people from USA are visiting Iran. We travel to Shiraz regularly and even during the previous presidency we have witnessed planes full of Americans travelling there. It was quite hopeful for all as it demonstrated USA is not a narrow minded bunch… quite the opposite!
2dvisio··on Internet-monitoring – A Docker stack that monitors your home network
Interesting lots of people had the same idea. I have done something similar for my home network using an Ethernet connected RaspberryPI dedicated to this task using a cronjob, the speedtest-cli JSON format, MongoDB and just some JS graphs. - very rudimentary.

One thing I found very important was to plot the scatter of PING vs. Download speed (my Upload is super stable).

Then I created the probability density function of that (using KDE) and used it to get a better deal from my network provider - I could prove they were selling me a slower network most of the time - they now allocate 70Mb/s on a 50Mb/s deal so just that they hit the 50Mb/s most of the time.

It also allowed me to clearly identify some outlier situations where my network suddenly became 'bad' and I could show evidence of it being bad over time.

Certainly a project that should see more traction!

2dvisio··on Change your MAC address with a shell script (2019)
This has been sitting in my ~/scripts/ folder for the past 3.5 years. Just changing randomly the last pair was enough to do the trick in most situations. Also it requires understanding the first time which one is your WiFi interrface.

  #!/bin/bash
  sudo ifconfig en0 ether xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:$(od -txC -An -N1 /dev/random|sed 's/ //g'); sudo ifconfig en0 down; sleep 1; sudo ifconfig en0 up

2dvisio··on Confidential VMs
This seems a move to make people handling sensitive data (E.g. healthcare and insurance) make sure they have peace of mind and can tick the box “security and privacy” off? Even neutralising the potential issue of being linked with the omniscient google? How will MS and AWS respond will be interesting.

2dvisio··on Apple Watch detecting coronary ischaemia during chest pain episodes
Quite unlikely they did not try. Reflectance pulse oximetry is unfortunately affected a lot by ambient light and so, even for the Apple Watch, that might have caused unreliable measures.

Using the ECG for RR estimation though should be more than feasible...

2dvisio··on How to make pizza like a Neapolitan master
I relate to this 100%. Same background, lived in several places before ending up in London.

You can find good roasted coffee of many types in most of these places.

But if you need an espresso or any other Italian styled coffe. Nothing can beat Italy.

I admit one exception: Portugal. In a long trip to Lisbon I’ve done I had some of the best coffee there !

Edit: still using my 18yr old Bialetti for most of my coffee here and buying coffee when going back occasionally (ever brought back a trolley full of coffe through airport security checks?). Only reliable way so far to have decent coffee.

2dvisio··on 23andMe to share customer gene data with GlaxoSmithKline for $300M
So many questions...

1. Will 23andme share returns with the people who provided the sample in the long term?

2. Are the drugs that GSK going to produce being charged thousands a vial?

3. what happens to the data of those that are covered by GDPR?

Quite sure all the answers will disappoint me.

2dvisio··on Wanderland: A journey through Iran’s wild west
Have travelled there several times in the last years. People are lovely and so welcoming!

Last time (May ‘18) we travelled with an entire group (~30 people) all US citizens going there to learn more about the country their president was not so fond of.

That was just amazing.

2dvisio··on Uber Bike – A New Way to Commute or Explore
I rode a similar built in Poland (https://en.wavelo.pl/). And it was a very comfortable one.

Actually, the jump ones look very similar. Maybe they are manufactured by the same company?

2dvisio··on Uber Bike – A New Way to Commute or Explore
In Oxford the best I tried so far is Ofo. It rides like a perfectly normal bike. All others (Boris bikes included) still give me a strange feeling.

2dvisio··on Ask HN: After iOS 11 problems with battery. I am alone?
If you haven't seen an Apple genius you should probably. I got mine replaced now as my iPhone 7 continued to show signs of erratic battery behaviour after any SW attempt at fixing it.

Apple customer service has been quite useful, however it has taken me lots of time and effort while I was effectively trying to 'debug' the issue for them.

In addition, the tools that Apple has to check the battery is very vague.

When my phone was tested it had a Green/Red/Yellow chart with no axis whatsoever with a dot showing the status of my battery (Green borderline with Yellow). We have tried the phone of my GF, a 2 yrs old iPhone 5S which has completely random battery behaviour. In this case the graph showed only the Yellow square but with no indication of where the battery was in terms of battery life.

Now considering what to do with the iPhone as I am now a bit disappointed by how this (very) high end phone behaved.
