23B1··on The Origins of Wokeness
> In fact there's an even more ambitious goal: is there a way to prevent any similar outbreak of aggressively performative moralism in the future — not just a third outbreak political correctness, but the next thing like it?

Yes. It requires the willpower to disengage from the performative point scoring of internet discourse. Most good conversation must now happen in private for many reasons, much of that has to do with the technology PG himself has previously supported.

Presently, you are seeing social media forking into red and blue (x and bsky and fb and truth social). This is bonkers. A superior format for discussion is a place like HN which is tightly (and opaquely) moderated. Another great development is the use of 'community notes' which, for all its imperfections, is superior to straight censorship.

Ultimately I'd like to see people like PG invest in high quality journalism where the mission is a dispassionate reporting of the best-available facts, supported where possible with data, and presented in such a way as to demonstrate transparency.

I found the essay cogent and accessible. He's very active online and engages in good faith even with his detractors.
23B1··on The Typical Man Disgusts the Typical Woman
"Men are different than women" predated even that, hah!

Social science is pseudoscientific enough without drawing conclusions from okcupid data.

(fwiw the author Bryan Caplan is an economist and should know better)

QED
23B1··on Two fire experts interviewed about L.A. wildfires
I'll concede that you're making a strong individual case that common sense is anything but.
23B1··on Two fire experts interviewed about L.A. wildfires
Yes, it is common sense.
23B1··on Two fire experts interviewed about L.A. wildfires
It's inconvenient to the policy 'makers' who are more interested in their aspirations than their duty.

It's common sense to everyone else.

23B1··on Ask HN: Books about people who did hard things
> Less interested in people and character studies. More interested in the mechanics of how things that we take for granted actually got built and what the world they were made in was like.

These two things are inseparable.

23B1··on Ask HN: A friend has brain cancer: any bio hacks that worked?
You're a good friend trying to search for answers and I hope you find one.
23B1··on Why kids need to take more risks: science reveal benefits of wild, free play
I'm not sure the parents are necessarily to blame here.

23B1··on Software Bugs Led to 'One of the Greatest Miscarriages of Justice'
This will happen again and on a far greater scale thanks to the consolidation.

What about my comment makes you think I'd like to "live in a Putin-esuque society?"

Laundering IP. FTFY.

23B1··on Nearly half Dell's US workforce has rejected RTO. Rather WFH than get promoted (2024)
Good.

Managers pull your heads out of your ass and lean into the change in working habits.

There's a lot you can do to maintain the benefits of office work, just realize you aren't peoples #1 priority and you never were.

23B1··on Why Canada Should Join the EU
The Economist is a great magazine for understanding how a certain type of person views the world, and for a survey of goings-on you might not get elsewhere.

It is not great if you are looking for useful policy.

23B1··on I am rich and have no idea what to do
The cringiest humblebrag of a blog post in some time.

The only proper emotion in success is gratitude to the many people who helped you along the way.

Have some bloody decorum.

23B1··on One of my papers got declined today
A similar story.

I actively blogged about my thesis and it somehow came up in one of those older-model plagarism detectors (this was years and years ago, it might have been just some hamfisted google search).

The (boomer) profs convened a 'panel' without my knowledge and decided I had in fact plagiarized, and informed me I was in deep doo doo. I was pretty much ready to lose my mind, my career was over, years wasted, etc.

Luckily I was buddy with a Princeton prof. who had dealt with this sort of thing and he guided me through the minefield. I came out fine, but my school never apologized.

Failure is often just temporary and might not even be real failure.

23B1··on OpenAI failed to deliver the opt-out tool it promised by 2025
I'd love to hear HN's suggestions on keeping IP out of these LLMs where possible. For context I'm a writer. Nothing I write gets published online and I don't need to submit to, say, Amazon/Kindle to make money. However, much of my work is passed around by executives via email, for example. Ideas?
23B1··on Floridians have no right to bodies of water 'free of pollution,' court rules
The real headline is "Municipalities can't make an end-run around Florida state law."

I'm not saying it's right, but you can imagine where this sort of thing can go sideways. And I'm not even saying it's clear-cut (e.g. see how the Supremacy Clause and 10A work when it comes to Federal/State).

Anyway, obviously people shouldn't be forced to drink crappy water, but methinks that 'right' would have to be applied top-down instead of bottom-up under the U.S. system.

Damn. Nice. Thank you.
23B1··on AI companies cause most of traffic on forums
A classic, but his conclusion was "therefore we need ASI" which is the same consequentialist view these IP launderers take.
23B1··on AI companies cause most of traffic on forums
"Whence this barbarous animus?" tweeted the Techbro from his bubbling copper throne, even as the villagers stacked kindling beneath it. "Did I not decree that knowledge shall know no chains, that it wants to be free?"

Thus they feasted upon him with herb and root, finding his flesh most toothsome – for these children of privilege, grown plump on their riches, proved wonderfully docile quarry.

Thank you for your thorough and informative post!
23B1··on Carlsen disqualified from World Rapid and Blitz championship for wearing jeans
I would argue that groupthink is an umbrella term for what you describe; another might be 'bureaucracy' when used pejoratively, heh.
23B1··on Spotify Shuts Down ‘Unwrapped’ Artist Royalty Calculator with Legal Threats
Wow I just tried it out and it's quite awful, you're right. The way Spotify allows you to see what's in the 'radio' station and then add additional tracks to a playlist is great – there's almost no similar functionality in Apple music.

Actually bonkers that discovery is this bad in Apple music

23B1··on Carlsen disqualified from World Rapid and Blitz championship for wearing jeans
I love watching institutions cling to silly little rules to the point where it actually hurts them. It's a perfect demonstration of the problems with groupthink.

What about the app don't you like? I ask because I'm done with Spotify and looking for the next service.
