21eleven··on Decentralized Woo Hoo
I think this is a fair criticism to a limited extent, the crypto world is full of useless memecoins that don't have value beyond serving as gambling games.

However some people interested in and working on blockchain and related technologies are pursuing ambitious goals that could reshape the economy and politics in ways that makes them more open to participation and "strongly typed"/formalized. Achieving these goals is not the same as "decentralization" but more about a concept where you start from a decentralized and open base (blockchain) and build structures atop that base that are appropriately balanced between centralized and decentralized.

This is all very ambitious and may fail utterly and completely. But if it does succeed there will be a period where people have wild ambitious visions about what could be while the technology progresses to actualize those visions at what appears to be a slow pace.

To provide a specific ambitious vision: you could have a world where appropriate taxation of a transaction is built into a smart contract and everything from deciding on how to spend that tax money to the project management for the efforts those tax dollars fund is conducted in the open by people who have achieved various types of stakeholder status. Actually creating a system that allows for this and doesn't have tons of other problems will take time.

21eleven··on Some reasons to work on productivity and velocity
> An idea that's become increasingly popular in my extended social circles at major tech companies is that one should avoid doing work and waste as much time as possible, often called "antiwork", which seems like a natural extension of "tryhard" becoming an insult. The reason given is often something like, work mainly enriches upper management at your employer and/or shareholders, who are generally richer than you.

If you really are not comfortable with the consequences of your personal labor you should probably leave your job or not take it in the first place. This sounds like a decadent rationalization for highly compensated people that want to feel moral while being lazy.

21eleven··on Lots to See in Firefox 93
I see it as part of my internet civic duty to do what I can to prevent browser mono-culture and that is a large part of why I use Firefox.

Also it is an all around good browser.

21eleven··on Cryptocurrency is something people tell lies about in hopes of getting richer
The thing about NFTs is that many people who buy them "don't get NFTs".

All an NFT is is a token that represents ownership, like if the title to your car or house deed was on a blockchain.

NFTs have some sane use causes like designating the owner of a valuable asset or creating electronic tickets that can be resold or transferred without some centralized entity like ticketmaster.

Prior to NFTs existing, would you purchase the ownership rights to a gif or tweet? Probably not. And that is what is dumb about the excitement around NFTs, some people with more money than sense seem to think that now that you can represent ownership on a blockchain some things, like crappy jpegs, have suddenly become valuable assets.

21eleven··on Ways to think about water (2015)
Here's a different way to think about water:

There is the theory that evolution is a process by which genes advance and proliferate. That livings things are just the pawns for their genes, life is a medium for a genetic super organism.

But the genetic super organism is just a middle manager. Life does not exist for itself or for genes but for water. Living organisms were created within water and by water to be a vehicle that H2O can use to transcend the tyranny of gravity and explore space.

21eleven··on Researchers successfully potty-train cows
> I don't see how this story, the context of it, adds substantial merit to veganism.

If cows are smart enough to be potty trained then maybe we should not confine them to feedlots and slaughter them.

What cryptocurrencies are currently using post-quantum cryptography?
21eleven··on A from-scratch tour of Bitcoin in Python
While not implemented I think there are "lattice based" forms of cryptography that are believed to QC resistant that blockchains could migrate over to if QCs begin to show signs of increased fault tolerance and size.

21eleven··on DeepMind says reinforcement learning is ‘enough’ to reach general AI
And air. That's what is crazy about plants, their carbon comes from the CO2 in the air.

Also if someone loses weight, most of the carbon that made up their fat leaves the body as breath.

21eleven··on DeepMind says reinforcement learning is ‘enough’ to reach general AI
RL can provide amazing results (AlphaGo, AlphaStar (Starcraft 2 agent), etc) but it requires a well modeled world to work with.

Games like Go and Starcraft are well modeled worlds. If you want something akin to AGI to operate in the "real world" you will need a high quality data model of the real world for the RL system to work off of.

21eleven··on DarkSide ransomware gang quits after servers, Bitcoin stash seized
Or one of the members of the criminal gang ran off with all the cryptocurrency and then made a public post claiming some form of law enforcement seized the crypto.
21eleven··on Why “Idea” People Are Risky and What to Do About It
An idea is a base quantity. A bad idea maybe worth 1, a good idea 10, a great idea 100. But execution is a multiplier. Good execution is a 10x. Great execution is a 100x.

An average idea with excellent execution is worth a lot more than a great idea with poor execution.

21eleven··on Fungi on Mars? Evidence of Growth and Behavior from Sequential Images [pdf]
Yes it is an extraordinary claim. All prior evidence shows that life is nonexistent on all planets that are not Earth. So to suggest that the planet closest to us has life is far out side the norms of our current beliefs about how frequently life appears.
21eleven··on Crazy New Ideas
I think there is some evolutionary psychology at play in people's bias against "Crazy New Ideas". A human hunting and gathering on a savanna with a crazy new idea is likely to be killed by a lion or starve. Sure the new ideas sometimes were breakthroughs but the idea-haver's peers likely experienced strong selective pressure to wait until there was good evidence that an idea was unlikely to get one killed before endorsing it and practicing it themselves.

In modern times we should feel more safe to have "Crazy New Ideas", we probably need them to solve many of the problems our world faces today. But we are biased against new ideas since our brains have evolved to see them associated with negative outcomes like death by lion or exile from the tribe. There is a lower risk of death by big cat today so people should feel more willing to have an celebrate new ideas.

21eleven··on D(?)A(?)O – Decentralization and Autonomy in “DAOs”
Because the governance structures of DAOs will be open source smart contracts they will be, in theory, easier to iterate upon and improve.

21eleven··on Show HN: Dendron – A Hierarchical Tool for Thought
I too would appreciate such a review. I have a preorder for v2 but no experience with the first version of the device.

The customers at the top of the preorder queue for v2 got their tablets about a month ago[1] so the number of people able to write such a review will be limited for the next month or so.

Worth noting there is open source tooling for modding/ssh access to remarkable tablets[2].

21eleven··on Why deep learning works even though it shouldn’t

21eleven··on Archive of tech interview questions of Google, Amazon, FB, Samsung and et al.
While we are all biased toward seeking to validate our own choices I believe it also can be said that some choices are more effective at producing a given outcome than others.
21eleven··on Archive of tech interview questions of Google, Amazon, FB, Samsung and et al.
By all means, study algorithms and data structures but the idea of sourcing and studying specific "company questions" is silly and kinda unethical.
21eleven··on Archive of tech interview questions of Google, Amazon, FB, Samsung and et al.
Unpopular opinion: solving programming riddles makes you not only a better programmer but a better all-around problem solver and thinker.

Before I could solve your average programming riddle I scoffed at them. Now that I have some experience solving them I feel like it is truly a form of mind expanding knowledge and should be valued not only in hiring but in life in general.

21eleven··on Archive of tech interview questions of Google, Amazon, FB, Samsung and et al.
I feel like this is an often overlooked fact about these programming exercises, once you get into solving them they are surprisingly fun.
