1stranger··on Windows 95 released August 24, 1995
Not to mention the Windows 95 Jennifer Aniston and Matthew Perry... thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ypXfodOu-s
1stranger··on Miami, your Waymo ride is ready
Yeah that's obviously not great but that video is nothing like what you described. You made it sound like it drove onto a mainline train track with a train barreling down the tracks that couldn't stop with the guy diving out of the car to avoid getting clobbered. It did not, it got stuck on a tram track. Not quite the same thing.
1stranger··on macOS 26's Cut Corners
1. it's not that bad 2. you'll probably get used to it 3. gotta get it over with sometime

1stranger··on Apple's slow AI pace becomes a strength as market grows weary of spending
Best I can tell you're arguing that 9% market share by units sold is some kind of failure. Now go look at who has the highest market share by revenue. Hint: it's a fruit company.
1stranger··on Yale's 367-year-old water bond still pays interest (2015)
So, 377-year-old water bond still pays interest, presumably.

I thought that was Windows XP?

1stranger··on Windows 11 will create heaps of needless trash
I don't understand this logic. The vast majority of people don't care what version of Windows they're running. They'll just keep running Windows 10 without a care in the world. Just like they keep running Windows 7.
1stranger··on Chrome abandons 'simplified domain experiment' in omnibar
Why did everybody lose their minds over this? It seems Safari does this without much drama.

1stranger··on 72% of smart TVs and 46% of game consoles hardcode DNS settings
> This isn't difficult: TVs should not be "smart".

As it turns out other people have different priorities than you do. The world not conforming to your personal preferences does not make it wrong.

1stranger··on 72% of smart TVs and 46% of game consoles hardcode DNS settings
I'm surprised to say but the latest Samsung interface and remote is quite good. Good enough I feel no need to put an Apple TV on it (which happens to have an awful remote).
1stranger··on Remote work means anyone can take your job
Those salaries are not correct for either location.
1stranger··on Covid-19 May Fuel Migration from High-Cost Cities, Analyst Says
50% seems... high. I don't think the majority of people are looking to become pioneers. Are the people who already work from home "live on some land"?
1stranger··on Uber lays off 3700 employees via Zoom
Presumably there is a lot of management being laid off as well that managed those 3,500 people. There probably isn't enough HR to manage that volume of layoffs 1:1. No point in dragging it out over multiple days, dealing with rumors, etc.

I watched the call in the article. Given the severance they're getting I think they did the most humane thing possible.

1stranger··on Wells Fargo temporarily suspending applications for home-equity lines of credit
Pretty sure residential mortgages cannot be called.

Edit: assuming the borrower is current.

1stranger··on Zoom taps Oracle for cloud deal, passing over Amazon, Microsoft
At that scale you're talking about millions in storage cost a month so I'm not sure $5 million is that scary.

Also for that amount of data it'd be faster to transfer as a stationwagon full of backup tapes (https://aws.amazon.com/snowball).

1stranger··on SQL databases come up with algorithms you’d never have dreamed of (2017) [video]
They're not that uncommon. You can do this with SQLAlchemy in Python or jOOQ in Java.
1stranger··on Tesla – Introducing V3 Supercharging
How are overhead lines any more ugly than a sprawling freeway?
1stranger··on Tesla – Introducing V3 Supercharging
At least your card can't get skimmed that way. Of course contactless would be the ideal.
1stranger··on Why can’t a bot tick the 'I'm not a robot' box?
Protip: if you click on the headphone icon on recaptcha you get an audio challenge which I find much simpler and less annoying.

> Inefficiency and lack of centralization in government may have indeed been a plan of the US government that worked at its founding, but at some point we have to re-evaluate and find a balance between decentralization and efficiency.

This one thing I've thought about. People seem to assume it's bureaucracy within government that's the issue when really it's bureaucracy among government.

At a minimum there's Federal, State, County, Municipal. Then you might have other specially formed districts for transportation or whatnot. There's no "the government". There's many governments and trying to get them all to agree on a coordinated plan for anything beyond the status quo seems next to impossible. The Bay Area is a perfect example of this. It's all one region. For all intents and purposes municipalities are pointless. It's just one giant organism. But some counties didn't want to join BART, some are more NIMBY, some don't want to construct housing, and so on.

Could anybody familiar with other better functioning countries maybe compare this system to one that is known to work better?

1stranger··on I Can No Longer Recommend Google Fi
CDMA is going away. Verizon is supposed to drop 3G by end of this year.
1stranger··on Zuckerberg San Francisco General’s tactics leave patients with big bills
How has this not been a scandal? The hospital, owned by the city, is fleecing its own citizens. The incentives are so perverse.

This is one reason why people in the middle to lower middle class resent the system. The system will only take care of you if you are indigent. If you're upper class you're wealthy enough to take care of your own problems. Of course I think their grievance ends up being that somebody else got something they didn't instead of demanding they receive the same benefits (affordable healthcare).

I assume they were referring to calendar based naming a la Ubuntu.
