1stcity3rdcoast··on Is Chrome the New IE? (2023)
Which is ironic because scores of enterprise companies developed internal systems/reporting/intranets using .NET in the early 2000s, restricting their users to Internet Explorer!
1stcity3rdcoast··on Lumina Desk – digital desk for health and productivity
I've been a Lumina Camera user for almost a year now and I've been impressed with two things: the quality of the camera, but also the Lumina team's approach to improvements. They ship updates constantly and the software gets better all the time. I'm excited to see that same approach to such a cool new product.
1stcity3rdcoast··on Investigating how the New York Times A/B tests their headlines
Have journalists ever controlled or written their own headlines? I don't think this is a change from any point in newspaper history.
1stcity3rdcoast··on The Framework Laptop
The article says there's a linux/no-os option
1stcity3rdcoast··on The Framework Laptop
This is super exciting and I can't wait to see the machines in the wild. Congrats on the launch!
1stcity3rdcoast··on FDA statement on following the authorized dosing schedules for Covid-19 vaccines
If anyone only ever made decisions while they were perfectly fed and rested, this would be a sad, slow, boring world, because nothing would ever get done or decided. There is such a thing as urgency, and people do work beyond a 35 hour work week with evenly spaced meals, and especially during a global pandemic.

Specific to this instance, this FDA meeting was a formality -- they had already had the data for two weeks to review. The efficacy was well-known. They chose to take a 4-day holiday (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday).

People don't all of a sudden sign house contracts. They've germinated the idea, spent weeks or months working through the pros and cons, talking to their life partners and family and agent and mortgage broker. The decision is made well in advance of the actual contract signing, and all the red lines are done before you get to the actual meeting to sign on the line. Similarly with the FDA regulators, they weren't meeting to review the data for the first time and come up with a decision on the spot. This was one final step in a very long process.

1stcity3rdcoast··on Danes Get 20-Year 0% Mortgages
Yes, especially if you have an alternative place to park the money that earns N+1, where N is your interest. Anything above that is marginal gravy.
1stcity3rdcoast··on Danes Get 20-Year 0% Mortgages
Exactly and makes total sense. Plus, not everyone has infinite income, so people are "rate limited" into choosing the 30 over a 15 or 10.
1stcity3rdcoast··on Danes Get 20-Year 0% Mortgages
Opportunity cost of the higher monthly payment surely factors in?
1stcity3rdcoast··on Electric cars make up 54% of cars sold in Norway in 2020
The retail price is the same, sure, but the effective price is much different because the incentives come from different tax and rebate schemes that aren't factored into the retail price. EVs have no VAT in Norway, no road tax, no toll or ferry fees [0] -- that's a major difference in the effective price!

1stcity3rdcoast··on Electric cars make up 54% of cars sold in Norway in 2020
But they're not priced the same. The MSRP is just the MSRP and does not include the incentives for EVs.
1stcity3rdcoast··on Electric cars make up 54% of cars sold in Norway in 2020
There are significant subsidies and schemes that the Norwegian government offers that reduces the total purchase price of the electric.
1stcity3rdcoast··on UK coronavirus variant may be more able to infect children: scientists
Are you saying that the mutation velocity is so unbelievable that it's clearly wrong? Or that it's so unprecedented that we should be worried?
1stcity3rdcoast··on Data Visualization Catalog
It's super hard to put together because you have to first do a factor analysis to even decide what the component parts are. I've always brute forced it using the (admittedly difficult) Excel function and the underlying dataset is not pretty!
1stcity3rdcoast··on I Am Deleting the Blog
The bias is Gell-Mann Amnesia.

1stcity3rdcoast··on You Can Pay Credit Suisse Not to Work There
This is great, thanks. I'm always behind on Matt's daily email and this will help me catch up. I do wish he would guest on more podcasts!
1stcity3rdcoast··on In Santa Cruz, a graduate student strike grows out of a housing crisis
Most California cities are 40-70 years (years!) behind demand in housing production. There aren’t 4 people waiting for that development; there are 40.

The population of the US continues to grow. Empty buildings are not something you need to be concerned about when the current supply is so inadequate.

1stcity3rdcoast··on SoundCloud raises $75M from SiriusXM
Cancellation is also by phone call only, which creates a lot of friction. I’ve tried to cancel a couple of times, and let it lapse once, and they always end up dropping my rate to $4/mo. Hard to say no to $50/year for 150 more options in your car. Even when the bitrate is like listening to a 1998 mp3.
1stcity3rdcoast··on Apps I pay for as a bootstrapped business
This is a good summary of The monthly investment for even a one-person side project.

Do you also use an accounting tool like QuickBooks or Xero?

1stcity3rdcoast··on Iowa Caucuses, the Blob, and the Democratic Party Cartel
All the candidates donated, not just Buttigieg. It was a joint venture between all of the primary candidates in Iowa.
1stcity3rdcoast··on Ask HN: How do you process payments?
They have a free tier up to $50k in revenue that I’ve used successfully. Hosted checkout, strong API, etc.
1stcity3rdcoast··on Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on?
Exactly —- while the alert system is interesting and does have value, if they are putting in the tough, long, and grindingly harsh effort to compile these disparate data sources, that itself is the moat and becomes the product. Definitely worth doing!
1stcity3rdcoast··on Show HN: Write a private diary using good old email
Gmail has an autocomplete function which means it’s inherently reading everyone’s email (for training).
1stcity3rdcoast··on Abandoned stores, empty homes: why San Francisco's boom looks like a crisis
It may seem like a lot of cranes and a lot of construction, but like tigershark notes below, on a relative basis it’s not even close to the amount of construction needed to meet demand (and thereby induce lower prices). Today’s building boom is a pittance relative to population.
1stcity3rdcoast··on Abandoned stores, empty homes: why San Francisco's boom looks like a crisis
Society already makes an effort by using their money to vote on whether they like that particular pizza place.
1stcity3rdcoast··on I Miss Microsoft Encarta
A good point, so I just looked it up. This April 1991 ad [0] shows 386 desktops with a hard drive at around $2000 in 1991 prices, and the comparable 486 models with a hard drive start at $7300.

To put that in perspective, $2000 in 1991 is $3700 in today’s dollars, and the 486 would be a staggering $13,500 today.

1stcity3rdcoast··on America’s urban rebirth is missing actual births
Yes, I think we can agree that there are trade offs, as with everything in life. In a world of scarce resources, we all place different value in different things. I’m not lambasting your choices just as I’d expect you not to deride mine.

But on your last throw-in dig, that’s disingenuous. Poverty is not unique to large cities. I’ve lived in rural towns as small as 7,000 and poverty there is just as visible and acute.

1stcity3rdcoast··on America’s urban rebirth is missing actual births
Literally nothing you described is unique to a city. Have a lovely cynical life!
1stcity3rdcoast··on America’s urban rebirth is missing actual births
For you, perhaps. But for me and my family, raising children in the densest urban core is a highly enjoyable experience. Imagine never being in traffic again. Having your choice of activities, parkland, and restaurants. Hundreds of friends within a single square mile. That’s what draws many of us to the city over the suburb. But to each their own.
