As opposed to the current system where people agitate for new laws to exploit them for economic gain!

The technicality here is that “fiancée” is historically female while “fiancé” is historically male. Same word, same pronunciation different suffix. Either way, nothing to get hung up about.

1stcity3rdcoast··on If Printed Dictionaries Are History, What'll Children Sit on to Reach the Table?
In the United States it’s still a law in many states that landline providers are required to provide a printed white pages, which they subsidize with yellow pages (ads). It’s a legal anachronism.

I tried Oculus for the first time yesterday and was very impressed. My last experience with VR was in the 90s, so my baseline was low, but it was a truly incredible experience.

An excellent follow up to the YA movie Space Camp, which is very fun. I’d read/watch that!

Aside from the philosophical objections to this model, think about the practical issues that arise, specifically regarding overhead. Unions are notorious for having well-paid administrative staff and leadership, and that does not scale with three or four separate unions. You end up with a net drain even if you were able to eke out some slight pay advantage.

Can you expand on pulling a Lightbank? Full disclosure, I’ve worked for two Lightbank-funded companies in Chicago but am just curious what you meant there.

1stcity3rdcoast··on Airware is shutting down after raising $118M
A vehicle on wheels or a track is orders of magnitude more efficient. It’s not sexy but it’s more effective than having to power a flying vehicle and control it autonomously. If you really want something more drone-like, hang it from the ceiling.

It’s certainly not cost-effective on a relative basis when compared to air travel. The Delta Shuttle runs Chicago-NY-DC every hour on the half hour for a song. Hard to compete with that on rail.

With rail you do get the benefit of landing in the middle of the city rather than an airport 30 mins from city center, but it’s still far less expensive in both time and money to fly when the trip exceeds about 4 or 5 hours.

We subscribed to Terra’s Kitchen after trying a few services including Blue Apron and Freshly.

Terra’s Kitchen, in addition to using non-disposable, durable vessels and cold packs that you return, also pre-chops and pre-preps many of the ingredients so meal prep and cleanup is truly 20-30 mins, which is half the time (or less) than Blue Apron.

Here are the vessels they use: https://www.terraskitchen.com/how-it-works/

Highly recommend.

Agree. It just wasn’t quality television. Which is par for the course for SciFi original shows - mediocre acting, sophomoric writing, okay visuals but not enough to keep me hooked after I slogged through the first few episodes.
1stcity3rdcoast··on California should emulate Tokyo, where housing stayed ahead of population growth
I am American and own a condo in the dense downtown core of Chicago among a sea of high-rises. I do, though, understand the desire for many other people to want a single family home. That is not my desire, but I get it.

My question was why the above poster doesn’t consider condo ownership “true” ownership? The condos on my block run between $500,000 and $3m, and the single family homes on the same block start at $3m and go to $7m. If I don’t buy one of those single-family homes, why does the poster not consider me a true homeowner? That was my specific concern with their remark.

Curious, why does a condo not count as true ownership in your opinion?

Linen Club | Business Development & Sales | Onsite in Chicago | $15/hour + Bonuses

We are an early-stage, pre-seed startup looking for our first salesperson. This is a one-month role with the potential to extend depending on sales growth and additional fundraising.

Our company provides hotel linen and housekeeping services to premium apartment buildings in Chicago. We own all the bed linens and towels and change them out from subscribers’ apartments every week, just like housekeepers at a hotel. We sell the service as a free amenity to buildings, and then we sign up individual tenants for a weekly recurring subscription. They can also sign up for housecleaning. We're looking to land our first few buildings, and that’s where you come in.

The job is a combination of inside and outside sales (prospecting, calling, and going on meetings with property and asset managers) with an hourly base rate and a bonus for every building you sign up.

We’ll provide prospecting support, promotional materials, and everything you need to be successful. You'll be selling alongside the co-founders and we'll pay for your desk at the River North Level Office location. The job starts immediately.

Email us with questions or your resume! Looking forward to hearing from you: hello@joinlinenclub.com

1stcity3rdcoast··on Operation Elop: The final years of Nokia’s mobile phones
I just switched from my final BlackBerry after 10 years in the B.B. ecosystem to an iPhone X. The Android app compatibility extended the life of my Classic for an extra year but was hamstrung by being painfully slow. I could run Spotify or Google Maps but only just so, and forget about multitasking.

I still miss the BB10 workflow. Messaging, multitasking, swiping was all perfected ahead of the mediocre implementation of those in iOS 11, but the X is so fast, I can just brute force my way around the UI gaps and get shit done more quickly.

Nothing will ever replace the Hub, though.
