120photo··on Dear Red Hat: Are you dumb?
How about everyone chip in so that Rocky/Alma can get a subscription to RHEL and get the source that way? The GPL does not say they have to publish the code in the wild just that they have to provide it when they distribute. There are many companies that use OSS, make modifications, and since they never distribute are not required to make that source available.

120photo··on CRISPR cancer trial success paves the way for personalized treatments
Not me but my wife. Will just put this out there for anyone else, the advancements made in Cancer treatment in the past few years are impressive. Don't lose hope.

Also, listen to your doctors as all of the sudden everyone is oncologist. Listen to your doctors, seek second opinions, do research but question everything as there is a lot of snake oil for sale.

I trust Rossmann, He will give Apple (or any company) credit when they do something right. Apple lost my trust years ago.
120photo··on Google Fiber plans 5-state growth spurt, biggest since 2015
I have AT&T fiber right now (500 plan) and Google has become available in the past couple months. AT&T has been great but if my intro rate goes up next month I will switch to Google. The only thing I am not happy with AT&T is that I can't use my own modem/router combo and the options on their router are lame (can't even setup my own DNS network wide). 500mb is more than enough but if my rate goes up Google will only be $5 more for 1GB.

Did some research and Ridgid is king. Also seen that HF Bauer vacs are also a strong competitor. Do love that I can wash the filter on my Redgid and install those bags.
120photo··on That time when I accidentally social engineered myself to a film set
I'll one up this one.

Years ago I worked IT at a film lab that also did onsite digital capture. There was a photo shoot going on and I needed to go onsite to troubleshoot a computer. The onsite Tech told me the stage number and streets. I said I know where that is and drove off. The location of the studio they were shooting at was across the street from Paramount Studios in Hollywood. I pulled up to the gate and explained to the guard that there was a shoot going on and I needed to get there ASAP to fix a issue that was holding up the shoot. The guard did not question much and let me through. I parked and made my way to sound stage 2 and found the set empty (giant hanger style set). I quickly realized something was off and called the on site Tech where he told me no their location was at a studio across the street. When I finally got to my location I fixed the issue then I got to sit next to the former Miss Israel. I was surprised how easy it was for me to get onto the Paramount Set and how much potential access I would have had.

120photo··on Learning Go as a Python Developer: The Good and the Bad
I tried porting a Python utility I wrote to Go specifically because I did not want people to have to install any 3rd party libraries (in this case just one). If anything I had a much deeper appreciation as to how much Python does for you and just lets you work. I would still like to port someday. For now I can containerize my app but that would still require people to install docker and learn how to use docker.

You can think of it as free work, of you can think of it as people building something they care about. When I post on here I don't think of it as free work but more as contributing to a community I want to be part of.

I was a old Final Cut Pro guy (never really got into the new X version). I was able to pickup resolve just fine and they make great improvements each year. If all you are doing is YT videos with titles this may be overkill, maybe Kdenlive.
120photo··on Apple Discontinues macOS Server
OSX server was nice, but I saw the writing on the wall years ago when they killed xserver and other products. I learned long ago never to put long term faith in their products.
120photo··on My free-software photography workflow
I look into what it going on from time to time, they are in the process of moving from GTK v2 to v3. Apparently it is not a easy transition but when it is done (GIMP v3) implementing adjustment layers and other new features should not take as much effort. I am going off memory so don't quote this as fact.
120photo··on My free-software photography workflow
Affinity is great but there is also not as much training as PS, but for the price it is worth having. One thing that Affinity and PhotoLine can do that PS can't is make curves adjustments in the Lab color space without having to change the entire document from RGB to Lab. I am sure there are plenty of other things XYZ apps do better than PS, but I will say this again, PS has so much training and tutorials out there which save you time.

To be fair to GIMP, I used PS back to when adjustment layers were not a thing. The work that team does is amazing and I give them props (though I still would love to see adjustment layers).

1) > (Oh, and to address your specific point, the designers spend exactly zero hours watching training and tutorials on the Adobe website).

Yes, most of the time when you know your tools you will not spend much time going through training material, but if you needed to there are plenty of options and not just from Adobe. If you want to learn and get started there are plenty more options.

2) > I know the open-source evangelists live in a rose tinted world where open-source automatically equals better.

I don't recall stating that OSS = better, but in many cases it is. RawTherapee may not be as easy to use compared to Lightroom of Capture One but if used properly you can achieve superior results. One closed source RAW processor I can think of that lacks much training material but achieves great results in Raw Photo Processor (better than LR of RT in many ways). GIMP is great but until they can implement Adjustment layers it will never be a good alternative to Photoshop. IMO PhotoLine is much better than Photoshop in many ways, but also lack much training material or a large budget (being developed by two brothers in Germany). I can keep going.

I should add to my original comment that the amount of training and getting a product out for users to use is major for a company to succeed. Adobe and Microsoft have done a great job at getting their products in front of students and making sure they are comfortable with their products before going into the working world.

120photo··on My free-software photography workflow
I am going to plug Andy Astbury's YouTube channel here, specifically his fantastic RawTherapee tutorials. Where Adobe, MS, and other big companies thrive is the amount of high quality training and tutorials for inferior software. RawTherapee is an amazing piece of software that is hard to use with limited learning resources (compared to Adobe or Capture One) but people like Andy are fixing some of that.

120photo··on Affinity 1.10
I got PhotoLine running under Wine. The interface is not as "sexy" but the capabilities of PL are great and in many ways better than PS or Affinity Photo. PL has been around almost as long as PS but is not as known. I believe two brother from Germany maintain the software. It is much better than GIMP too.
120photo··on OpenBSD Router Guide (2020)
Building a OpenBSD router has always been one of those projects in the back of my head but just never had the time. I plan on upgrading my home network in the next year and am considering MikroTik / RouterOS or a Ubiquity router. Anyone have experience with any of those and a custom OpenBSD build? What would be the advantage of going OpenBSD and is it worth it for your setup?

When I first heard of Linux in the late 90's, one of the main selling points for Linux was that it came with a free compiler. It is strange to think there was a time when people had to buy a boxed copy of a compiler to code.

120photo··on Moving from Macbook to Linux
It great until something breaks. I had a Arch Linux system going for a while and at some point (probably my own fault) broke graphics. I'm technical enough to where I could have probably fixed it on my own but honestly just did not have the time.

Not sure if something like this already exist (especially with ZFS and Btrfs) but it would be nice if there was a easy to use system restore manager you could boot into and restore your system to a last known working state. Again, keyword easy. Yes I'm technical enough to where I could fix it but I just don't have the time.
