Nexus hardware (LG made) was crap. Both mine and my wife's phones bootlooped at 12-14 months of purchase. Never had such issues with any of the other smartphones we have owned.

I had a similar brush with ambiguity sometime back when there was an article about a bill being tabled. The verb table has two opposite meanings per merriam webster:

https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/table#:~:text=tab...

a: to remove (something, such as a parliamentary motion) from consideration indefinitely b British : to place on the agenda

I did grow up in a religious vegetarian family but my rationale for remaining vegetarian is simple. We derive all our energy from the sun. The more hops between myself and the source, the less efficient the energy transfer. For now plants to me is the most efficient way I know. I still eat dairy and eggs but no meat for that reason.

Didn't know that either.

The article certainly lacks interesting details. Why did it take 9 months to edit the image? What nuances were involved?

Also would it have been better to capture the full moon?

0xcafecafe··on Tell HN: Amazon shopping is racing to the bottom of quality
I recently got an email from amazon saying they are charging my card again for items which I have already returned to them (via the whole foods store). I even have confirmation email of the said returns. Now the email claims they haven't gotten it (which I don't care about as I was only responsible for dropping them off to whole foods).

I am sure this is a glitch and I can contact them and get this fixed. However as a new dad this takes time away from other stuff and I would rather not have to deal with this. Will be more wary of purchases from now on.

I remember some liquor site in the US (totalwine IIRC) used to ask are you born after <date> to ascertain age and it worked pretty well.

But if that same restaurant started having different wait times for something as arbitrary as country of birth, we would have a problem.
0xcafecafe··on My journey through the American immigration system as a computer engineer
We are talking about 14% of the total annual green card quota, 140,000/1,000,000.Everybody is not coming from same place and it will be a pure FCFS system if these archaic quotas are gone.
0xcafecafe··on My journey through the American immigration system as a computer engineer
Diversity can be preserved for 86% of the green card quota. Why does need to be there for the other 14%?

Already this is forcing companies to make investments in offshore centers as it is difficult to hire here. There is enough proof this is bad for Americans but the current political climate makes any change impossible.

0xcafecafe··on My journey through the American immigration system as a computer engineer
Attributing all the problems to those bodyshops is a bit disingenuous IMO. Yes they are part of the problem. Even Chinese nationals face 5+ years backlog for their green cards. Limiting immigration from populous countries based on arbitrary country caps for employment based immigration makes no sense. As it is it is a small piece of the overall immigration pie (14% and if we count only primary applicants, ~5%).

What is happening due to this is all advocacy to fix this has to be done by the folks in backlogs (Indians & Chinese) and the rest of the world folks can happily go about business as usual. Yes, H1 reform is needed but green card reform is needed yesterday.

0xcafecafe··on My journey through the American immigration system as a computer engineer
Why though? If Google is hiring an engineer, it doesn't make a distinction and does so purely on skill. Why should it matter if said engineer is from Argentina (arbitrary example) instead of India?

The US issues roughly 1 million green cards each year. 86% of those go to family based immigration. The rest 14% are for employment based immigration. Even in there the dependents (spouse + kids) are counted against that quota. So net effect is close to 5% employment based immigration if we count only primary applicants. What purpose is discrimination by country of birth serving here?

0xcafecafe··on Google could have updated the Pixel 3 until Android 13, it just didn't want to
>With these options for updates available, there’s only one conclusion to draw: Google just doesn’t want to keep updating the Pixel 3. That three-year promise has been satisfied, and it's not making more money from Pixel 3 customers. Why go above and beyond?

To retain if not grow customers. We are looking for a phone for my wife's mom who has a moto G5 plus. For her user profile (calls, texts and video calls using whatsapp), a moto G5 was perfect at that time. We (pixel users ourselves) are lobbying her to use an iphone especially due to this BS EOL policy by google. She is very careful and can easily use a phone for 5+ years if the device lets her. Only iphone fits the bill as of now.

0xcafecafe··on Happy New Year HN! What are your plans for the new year?
We're about to have our second kid in spring so that is the biggest thing to look forward to. In prep for that, planning to switch out our sedan for a minivan (due to 2 carseats).

Apart from that, try to keep learning. Pickup something new I didn't know, last year it was chess, this year haven't picked anything yet (maybe swimming).

>>>and your performance may now also be judged on the performance of your students.

What is stopping them from passing all students then thereby degrading the whole quality of education? Accountability is good but if other states don't implement this, GA is at a disadvantage as professors would prefer other states now. Among all disadvantages I can think of this rule, this is the most immediate.

0xcafecafe··on France grants citizenship to 12,000 Covid frontline workers
Honestly I don't think it is. However a lot of opponents to removing country caps are always concerned with this. Hence I was saying if anything country caps may be justified for family based GCs. There is no viable argument for them to remain for employment based GCs.
0xcafecafe··on France grants citizenship to 12,000 Covid frontline workers
" In absence of a secondary differentiation criteria,"

I was addressing the concern of the PP who mentioned immigration being dominated by a few populous countries in absence of country caps. Ideally the immigration system should be revamped bottom up to include a point based system which gives points to educational qualifications as well as familial ties.

The current political climate leaves that option out of the window. Hence at least removing country caps from employment based immigration (which is 14% of the total annual quota) is a reasonable common sense fix.

0xcafecafe··on France grants citizenship to 12,000 Covid frontline workers
The US issues approximately 1 million green cards per year. 86% of those (860k) are for family based and 140k are for employment based. Country caps for family based GCs is not a bad thing and in fact it does address your point domination by populous countries. In absence of a secondary differentiation criteria, per country caps are a good thing for family based GCs.

But for the 140k employment based GCs, it depends on the company hiring the individual based on a skillset/qualification and sponsoring them for permanent residency. Google doesn't differentiate between an engineer from Argentina and an engineer from India (arbitrary example). Why should one get a greencard within a year and the other have to wait 10+ years?
