0xFFFE··on US to build six nuclear power plants in India
You are absolutely right, casting large objects with homogeneous composition and mechanical properties is very difficult practically. Slightly off topic, but the turbine blades used in the aircraft/marine/power engines are grown from single crystal for similar reasons.

0xFFFE··on India Imposes Complete Ban on Solid Plastic Waste Imports
That problem is being fixed, aforementioned article is one of the steps being taken towards that goal. Funny how "waste everywhere" automatically translates to let's dump more garbage in that country.
0xFFFE··on Boeing 787 Suffers Rare Dual Engine Failure on Landing
Seems like reasonable choice on the Boeing's part, the objective of the reverse thrust is to provide additional braking to the aircraft, if shutting down the engine has similar effect (albeit to a lesser extent), why not? Better than getting stuck in a dangerous situation if the reverse thrust was deployed prematurely.
0xFFFE··on Chinese Spacecraft Nears Landing on Far Side of Moon
It's Syd Barret who got there first though.
0xFFFE··on Chinese Spacecraft Nears Landing on Far Side of Moon
I think you meant Kuiper belt.
0xFFFE··on Mystery Math Whiz and Novelist Advance Permutation Problem
Ah, I see it now. Thank you for explaining it.
0xFFFE··on Mystery Math Whiz and Novelist Advance Permutation Problem
Apologies if this sounds dumb. But isn't P(n) = n! In this case, n=14 (episodes), which translates to factorial(14) = 87178291200. Which covers every possible arrangement of the 14 episodes? Where is this 93,884,313,611 coming from? Or am I making a fool of myself here?
0xFFFE··on My Amazon Interview Horror Story

0xFFFE··on OpenBSD 6.4 released
Indeed, as an example "ls --help" on Linux prints at least 3 pages of information on stdout. I would rather read top quality man page and have a succinct "-h" message.
0xFFFE··on Ask HN: YouTube down?
Kudos to the Ops team indeed, can't wait to read the PM report.
0xFFFE··on Business networking for nerds (2017)
Same, I wouldn't have clicked otherwise, kinda proves the article's point :)
0xFFFE··on Mathematicians confirm the possibility of data transfer via gravitational waves
C'mon, we can already transmit data across different dimensions using a wrist watch & morse code. Yeah, bandwidth isn't that great but hey, we could use a wall clock.
0xFFFE··on Administrative Purgatory
> US-friendly Western country.

Wouldn't that be Eastern countries, technically speaking? unless you used it as a synonym for "First" world countries.

0xFFFE··on Show HN: Interactive guitar scales diagrams
Thank you for the wonderful work.
0xFFFE··on Microsoft Is Said to Have Agreed to Acquire GitHub
Maybe this is an unpopular question.

People unwilling to pay for a service they think is important for their work, yet lose their shit when the the said service does what is best for them. That is, to be sustainable.

AFAIK, GH charges for private repos and yet they are not-profitable. Gitlab offers free private repos, how will the story end differently?

EDIT: Typo

0xFFFE··on The illusion of time
Please don't say coffee is an illusion, I basically run on coffee. :)
0xFFFE··on Post-Mortem and Security Advisory: Data Exposure After travis-ci.com Outage
Not being snarky. How hard is it to setup DB replication and do testing/QA on that DB? Isn't it the SOP?

Why the remediation list doesn't include it?

0xFFFE··on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Will Default to the X.Org Stack, Not Wayland
I have been using awesome, but I often see people recommending i3. Any advantages of i3 over awesome?
0xFFFE··on Microsoft cURLs too
Precisely. Why would anyone do that is beyond me.
0xFFFE··on Microsoft cURLs too
Brilliant, thanks for sharing.
0xFFFE··on Things I have learnt as the software engineering lead of a multinational
Nitpicking.

> 20. The Sith are right, rage propels. But the Jedi are right, you must not let it control yourself. What nobody tells you is that the rage game is intrinsically tiring and rage will take control as soon as you get too tired, so stop well before.

37. Don't assume everyone reading your article gets the Star Wars reference.

0xFFFE··on Unknown Mozilla dev addon "Looking Glass 1.0.3" on browser
Running 57.0.1, and I don't see it either.
0xFFFE··on Western Digital to Use RISC-V for Controllers, Processors
I am relatively new here, obviously I don't have enough karma points to down vote, but even if I did, I wouldn't down vote for an opposing view point. This is one thing I don't like about the commenting system here. It discourages people from presenting their opinion without worrying about getting down voted. Secondly, I would expect people who have accumulated enough karma points to down vote, to have an open mind about entertaining different takes on the matters being discussed.
0xFFFE··on Why your programmers just want to code
I couldn't agree more, once team members start focusing on personal glory they lose the big picture. From that point onwards team becomes an inefficient machine with sustained decay.
0xFFFE··on What Happens If China Makes First Contact?
What if we are the first/only intelligent beings in the universe and it is upon us to spread to other galaxies and stars?

Probabilistically unlikely for us to be the only ones, but just a thought.

0xFFFE··on A CEO's Guide to Emacs (2015)
Thanks, but "upgrade"? ;)
0xFFFE··on A CEO's Guide to Emacs (2015)
Now, Vim. But I would definitely like to give Emacs another try, just for kicks. Do you think emacs with evil is the path with least resistance for a long term Vi/Vim user?
0xFFFE··on A CEO's Guide to Emacs (2015)
I started off with Emacs and a month a later tried Vi. I found Vi to be a better fit for me than Emacs and haven't looked back since. I have huge respect for both editors, they both are much older than me :) I wish I could write something that people would find useful for years to come. Having said that, I love to jab(friendly) at Emacs users in my circle of friends and colleagues. Makes the conversation even more colourful with a bit of booze inside ;)
0xFFFE··on Company gives non-smokers six days holiday to compensate for cigarette breaks
> the smokers at this company are actually healthier and more productive

More productive perhaps, but healthier? I don't think so.

EDIT: Typo.

0xFFFE··on Learn to use Awk with hundreds of examples
I use sed & awk all the time. It is an invaluable tool while debugging issues, extracting fields from log files etc. I am not dissing python or perl, I use python extensively as well. But while you are in the middle of an incident, hard to beat a quick oneliner, like this random example.

awk -F":" 'BEGIN{total=0}{if($3>240)total+=$3}END{print total}' /etc/passwd
