Censorship resistant money is a nice use case. The lightning network will create microtransactions, I imagine devices negotiating for bandwidth and paying few satoshis for the privilege. Its too bad there is such an energy requirement built into the system, that's my I'm keeping my eye on Chia.

0x4f3759df··on Ask HN: Who's starting new towns in the US?
Yes that's a major reason people move to the suburbs (but not actually why they were created in the first place), but on the other hand you can build a safe town where the buildings are close together.
0x4f3759df··on Ask HN: What are some good resources to learn how to invest and build wealth?
The greater point is if you become a landlord, you get rich with the bank's money.

People argue that we will just block ads at the transport level, but I don't see why the site won't just add an extra hop and serve the ads from their server.

The founder of Dominos pizza built the city of Ave Maria, FL -- It gets high marks in the child safety/friendly category from the local press but feels suburban to me. The most famous example is probably Seaside, FL built buy Duany Plater-Zyberk, it was the set of "The Truman Show". The story is interesting they had to fight all these dumb zoning laws (eg. The Fire Department buys the biggest truck they can find and then think that every road in the state must accommodate it) -- DPZ has other stuff worth checking out: https://www.dpz.com/Projects/All

My favorite is in Jakriborg, Sweden https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jakriborg

You learn about this sort of stuff if you are plugged into the urbanist blogs / podcast scene

0x4f3759df··on The Koch brothers are campaigning against tax rises for public transit projects
A self driving car takes up as much space as a normal car. People tend to know how much the new lightrail is going to cost but don't know how much it costs to turn a two lane road into a three lane road, or the general costs of the automobile infrastructure. When I went digging around I found each traffic light pole unit cost $150k, so a normal intersection is $600k
0x4f3759df··on Elon Musk emails employees about 'extensive and damaging sabotage' by employee
There's $10B in TSLA short positions, when the numbers get this big its not unthinkable.
0x4f3759df··on Ask HN: How did you deal with the fact that you were growing old
Many of the downsides about 'being old' can be staved off with proper diet, fitness, (don't smoke, don't do drugs) moderate alcohol, and some common sense like don't destroy your knees with running. If you are fortunate by the time you are old you will have wisdom and grandchildren.
0x4f3759df··on Ask HN: Will Microsoft ever become cool again?
You left out that .NET Core is just as fast as Node.js [1] and .Net runs on linux. Its pretty cool that I can write Linux programs now even though I am terrible at c (to my neverending shame).

I think there's a big difference here.

0x4f3759df··on Google Renounces AI for Weapons, but Will Still Sell to Military
China is a leader in AI and they will develop AI weapons (does anyone doubt this?) Isn't the logical conclusion the country with AI weapons will become militarily superior to one without?
0x4f3759df··on Ask HN: What is your favorite way of setting up online store in 2018?
It seems like a good way to learn Python, but after you've learned enough you will lose interest in maintaining your friend's web store for practically no money.
0x4f3759df··on Tesla Faces Accelerating Rate of Model 3 Refunds
Is it unwise to buy the first version of car? Seems like you wouldn't want to buy something until they get the kinks out, maybe a few years after production.

NVidia has a self-driving software stack that they can drop into a 3D sim. Same stack works in the sim (ie real world has a real camera, sim world has a sim camera, real world has a real lidar, sim world has a sim lidar...) They will drive billions of sim miles with their stack.
