0x4f3759df··on YouTube's tendency to push everyday users toward politically extreme content
I've only ever heard the term 'echo-chamber' as a pejorative against people who hold anti-establishment views, ie 'Hillary lost because middle America is stuck in right wing / alt-right echo chambers.' It's appears to be a derivation of the 'conspiracy theorists are mentally ill argument' or 'Yes, people hold these views, but its not their fault, choose one (mental illness/echo chamber).
0x4f3759df··on Twitter bans Alex Jones and Infowars for abusive behaviour
Hate speech is a phony political category. Hate Christians and white people? Well that's just fine. Have a Twitter account that retweets verified people saying 'kill all whites'? That'll get you banned.
0x4f3759df··on Twitter bans Alex Jones and Infowars for abusive behaviour
I don't see why he can't just terraform Mars and built his own Internet and Twitter there.
0x4f3759df··on Americans are changing their relationship with Facebook
Maybe Americans figured out it's not that much fun to post when you have to consider that your mom, your aunt, your employer, your future employers, law enforcement, the TSA, the NSA and foreign governments are going to read it. Long live pseudonyms.
0x4f3759df··on Ask HN: Your subjective takes on living a non-boring and pleasant life?
Understanding the arc of life. Life in your 20s can be more about horsing around with your friends, but after 40 its more about spending time with your family (your friends become less available because they all started families).

Discovering fitness. Imagine someone who sits in their car on the way to work, then sits at work, then comes home and watches TV while sitting. That person is unhappy because they are sitting all day. Think of kids, they want to run around and play soccer, go to karate, do gymnastics... we're not so different. Hit the gym, hit the bike machine/trail, hit the weights, do a 5K, hit the climbing gym, stretch, do a handstand, do a butterfly kick, do an aerial

Live in a walk-able area if possible. Learn a foreign language. Eliminate vices

0x4f3759df··on Loneliness is pervasive and rising, particularly among the young
Most of the US is low-density and built for cars, so not a lot of walking happening. Also some people in the city will take a Bird or Lyft scooter automating out walking
0x4f3759df··on Loneliness is pervasive and rising, particularly among the young
I keep thinking along these lines. Like Friday night run and beer. You do a 5k run and then you all get a beer and you can bond over the run.
0x4f3759df··on Loneliness is pervasive and rising, particularly among the young
Someone once made the same point about fitness, you used to have to roll down your windows manually, but now its automatic. More and more muscle functions being eliminated by automation. Add them all up and it makes a difference.
0x4f3759df··on What Airbnb really does to a neighbourhood
That's a bit of a reduction. More like 'Any neighborhood in a world class city with a reputation ...' Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Kansas City could develop cool areas, but probably won't be overrun by AirBnB tourists.
0x4f3759df··on Locals reportedly frustrated with Waymo's self-driving cars
People also hate sidewalks [1], bike lanes, scooters, gentrification

0x4f3759df··on Microsoft Bug Testers Unionized, Then They Were Dismissed
I've heard that the UK does this as well, still get insurance from work because the free one is terrible.
0x4f3759df··on Buzzfeed journalist denied China visa following coverage of Xinjiang crackdown
One infers their systems are highly integrated (tax/crime/social/banking/education/gps all unified)
0x4f3759df··on Bitcoin, Ether Sink as ‘Sense of Panic’ Grips Crypto Investors
The latest Trace Mayer podcast is worth a listen: "Wall Street veteran Caitlin Long discusses the sixth network effect of financialization with Wall Street and institutional investors." https://www.bitcoin.kn/

Also Bitmain is basically insolvent.

0x4f3759df··on Bitcoin, Ether Sink as ‘Sense of Panic’ Grips Crypto Investors
I expect the money will come from Wall Street once adequate custodial / regulatory framework is in place.
0x4f3759df··on U.S. Attorney Moves to Dismiss Murder-For-Hire Charges Against Ross Ulbricht
I wonder if the case would have played out differently if Silk Road hadn't coincided with the rise of synthetic drugs.
0x4f3759df··on Monsanto ordered to pay $289M damages in Roundup cancer trial
Not sure if it causes cancer or not, but this is like a security hole in the scientific process (ie mostly only the company that produces X will fund studies of X). It's interesting to think security holes more generally - Nick Szabo got me thinking along these lines with his recent pinned tweet: "Giant companies are the security holes of capitalism. The more centralized industries get, the more they attract socialist political activists. The Bolshevik Revolution was a violent version of this vs. railroad stations, newspapers, etc. Now activism is focused on tech giants."
0x4f3759df··on Brazil sets new record for homicides
Another crazy stat: 132 politicians in Mexico murdered since September.
0x4f3759df··on Are Facebook and YouTube quasi-governmental actors?
Great point, also I would add payment processors to the list.
0x4f3759df··on Cities’ Offers for Amazon Base Are Secrets Even to Many City Leaders
How I wish we could build European block housing (is this the correct term?) in this country. The buildings are shoulder to shoulder and take up the whole block.

0x4f3759df··on Ask HN: What are some niche communities you enjoy?
His level 4-2 vid is pretty crazy, 20 minute video about 9 seconds of gameplay https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i1AHCaokqhg
0x4f3759df··on Ask HN: Had anyone already had to deal with the GDPR fines / abuse?
The first one frames it as lucky because the fine could have been 20mil€...
0x4f3759df··on Nearly Half of Americans Are Lonely
I think you have to be a regular somewhere (gym, your kid's soccer games, dogpark, neighborhood bar, etc), people generally won't warm up to you until they've seen you a few times. Of course we've made it really easy to stay indoors.
0x4f3759df··on Ask HN: How to overcome fear of flying?
There's a show called 'Air Disasters' that you might be interested in, answers your questions for other flights.
0x4f3759df··on The Pension Hole for U.S. Cities and States Is the Size of Japan’s Economy
You neglected to include the possibility that the Fed bails out the major players (State of Illinois) with money printing.
0x4f3759df··on Another German regional government is switching from Linux to Windows
I'm under the impression that its more to do with external hardware compatibility like printer drivers (do industrial printers have linux drivers?), license plate scanners, etc.
0x4f3759df··on Show HN: Kontext – Learn new words by watching movies in a foreign language
I guess you start the movie on Netflix and mute it, and then read the subtitles taken from 'Open Subtitles DB' The UI using a list is a bit jarring, I would prefer a smooth scoll, like a very large page scolling down, not a listbox populating.

"Find more movies in German" button not working as expected, takes you to a screen where you have to choose your language.

0x4f3759df··on Ask HN: What were/are you doing at age 25? What would you change?
There's so much to be said about the topic. Its a universal topic like food, pretty much everybody can connect over a fitness discussion. We inherit so much research and equipment. Arnold Schwarzenegger had to invent his own gym equipment, likewise somebody came along and figured out the Russians were getting huge results with kettlebells, all this knowledge and equipment just right there waiting for us. David Belle crafted freerunning, there's all these climbing gyms and knowledge, if your really ambitious you can learn the fun ariel moves from the wushu guys. Really amazing if you take it all in.
0x4f3759df··on Ask HN: What were/are you doing at age 25? What would you change?
Advice to my younger self: Get really fit. Like do upside-down-handstand-push-ups fit. Fitness is an easy way to get status that requires essentially no luck. Women are attracted to high status individuals. It shows you are a hard worker, a trait that people respect. It gives you energy and health, and is much more fun than being on a computer.

Family advice: life after 40 for most people is about family and the children (that they presumably had in their 20s and 30s)

Biz advice: People will happily pay you much much less than your worth if you put up with it.

0x4f3759df··on Fake sultan was scamming a Miami billionaire. Then he ate pork
Christophe Rocancourt is also an interesting con artist. There's a great show on available on Amazon Prime called Vanity Fair Confidential where I learned about him.
0x4f3759df··on Tesla strikes another mammoth energy storage deal in California
One issue is that they need to stay cooled and so there's an entire cooling apparatus which of course takes power.
