0ldskool··on Web3 is centralized and inefficient
Using blockchain ontop of IPFS is to provide incentives. I don't know what is "questionable" about Filecoin, it seems fine to me. I used IPFS before blockchain but mostly just to play around with, never for any serious projects. Filecoin is simply a way to get more people to use IPFS. NFT.storage is the same, they see a market they would be a perfect fit for and try to get more and more people using IPFS.

I think you are mistaken in 2 aspects. Blockchain != web3. Blockchain + cryptocurrencies make up a large part of web3 because they provide an incentive mechanism to be decentralized. Web3 is about decentralization, other solutions that follow the goals of decentralization of the web can fall into web3. I would say IPFS falls into this category. Other possible solution/algorithms that focus on decentralization could also fall into this category.

Blockchain provides incentives, those incentives can be transformed into cash for the end user. Web2 basically focused on 2 aspects. Transforming the browser into a OS that can run on any computer, using advertising for the generation of money for stakeholders. In regards to advertisement the reason why this was use d was because it worked in the past. Printing press --> newspaper --> advertisements, Radio --> audio advertisements, Movies --> pre-movie advertisements, tv --> commercials. This mechanism has worked before and worked for web2.0. The problem now is that so many companies are involved in data collection on individuals that it has become quiet scary, this was not possible with previous mediums (not to the same degree). Game companies have tried to transition to micro-transactions, psudo-gambling, upgrades as a payment form. Web3 offers a different incentive model that if successful can replace these arguably more scary methods.

well the case is that if github keeps going down and becomes completely unreliable you can take your decentralized code and more it to a different provider. Those other providers will also have value added stuff and you will not lose the core of your business/work (your source code).

If it was a pure central authority + protocol you would be doomed to live and die with them. Imagine if instead of git + github you had some source code protocol that only allowed you to checkout the latest commit of some branch. All code history needed to be viewed by connecting to the central servers. Why not make it even worse, you could only view+edit a specific file of the latest commit on your machine. All other files must live on the central server, you are not allowed to build/compile code locally either... Centralization is the process of you giving up control to a "trusted" entity. If they fail you lose everything

I personally think facebook saw itself dieing which is why it focused so hard on the Metaverse and acquiring companies. Facebook as its own product may die but the company will probably live on in some form or another. I feel like unlike Yahoo, Facebook is full of very capable and technical people. Even if they make a bunch of misteps and bad predications they will find alternatives and will make a come back.

Without decentralization you wouldn't have "A few Telco's" you would have 1 global telco. The most hardcore form of decentralization usually means that there is no centralization ontop of the decentralize medium. I think this is in general unlikely. People are lazy and tend to congregate together and therefore there will always be some form of centralization. Not everyone wants to think about the implementation details and just wants stuff to work without caring how. Whats important with decentralization is choice and future proofing. When one company dies or becomes untrustworthy you can jump onto a different one.

Proof of Work is one implementation but not the only one, there are many more efficient versions now. You might as well complain about Dial-up saying internet is a waste and will never amount to anything because the phone line is always tied up....

0ldskool··on Web3 is centralized and inefficient
My opinion is that the backbone should always be decentralized and open. i.e. the internet.

What is built ontop of it can be pseudo-centralized and/or regulated if needed but there is always the technical ability to re-decentralize if needed. My main concern is that I want the creation to outlast the creators/controllers. What happens if an important company gets bought and its IP split up? What if the new owners simple disable the product or put it behind a paywall. Look at bittorrent, the new owners completely screwed it up but the protocol + previous implementations could continue to be used. Look at Facebook's double standard of how they censor content.

I personally think anything that is popular + important enough to be used by much of the world should always have an open backbone should things go wrong with the current company+implementation. Open source is a form of decentralization. I also think decentralization of networks (backbones) is important to prevent one organization from achieving a "network affect" that makes them the central authority on a given resource (facebook, twitter, etc...)

I don't think so. They are creating the metaphor that banks == blockchain implementation + stakeholders, money == blockchain tokens. Currently most of the cryptocurrencies you see with ICOs are just erc20 tokens ontop of ETH (therefore centralized). For banks they leverage SWIFT + other more local mechanisms (double entry accounting, etc...) to resolve transfers.

Its possible in the future we will develop a mechanism that allows two completely unrelated & unconnected blockchains to transfer tokens between eachother. I assume there would have to be either an intermediate chain specific to this purpose or both chains would need to follow a similar implementation. So far we started with Proof Of Work, we now have Proof of Stake and Proof of History. There may be more mechanisms in the future.

0ldskool··on You, your parents, and the hotness of who you marry
I guess that's what meeting the parents is all about? You can get an idea of what your potential spouse might look like when they are older?
0ldskool··on Scientists say they can read nearly the whole genome of an IVF-created embryo
Well the governments job is to create laws to make it easier for humans to live together. Even if Gattaca style gene selection is available, laws can be put into place to prevent discrimination.

I.e. it is 100% illegal to do genetic testing for anyone other then yourself or your under-aged children. Those tests can only be done by a doctor and cannot be transferred or shared with anyone other than another doctor. Any employer or person that attempts to do a genetic test on someone can face jail-time.

0ldskool··on Russians Are Racing to Download Wikipedia Before It Gets Banned
I was thinking the same thing when I saw this article. Just need 1 russian to pin it to a local russian based IPFS node and they are good. Get others to pin it from there as needed.
0ldskool··on Why America can’t build quickly anymore
I would rather have a government that tries and builds solutions that are not the most optimal rather than giving up and not doing anything. Solutions do not have to be the best all the time, just better than what exists. Constant iterative improvements over time
0ldskool··on Building games through natural language using OpenAI’s code-DaVinci model
I don't think the poster said anything about goodness. Goodness is subjective, originality implies creativity. I personally also want to see more original works in books, movies, tv, and games. After getting into any medium for awhile you realize that most stuff is just a rehash of existing versions & ideas you hadn't come across before (usually because its just a bit older).

Seeing something that could be argued to be "bad" or "dumb" yet completely unique would be my preference.

0ldskool··on Ask HN: Is Public WiFi Dangerous?
Well you could just setup a VPN at home + DDNS using something like duckdns. No need to buy a VPN
0ldskool··on LibreWolf – A fork of Firefox, focused on privacy, security and freedom
libreWolf seems to be built regularly using the latest version of Firefox. If it ends up using the nightly build of of firefox nightly or dev edition in the future it could release security updates even faster then firefox "mainstream" itself. LibreWolf does not appear to be maintained by a single person like you implied. Its a relatively new project it can either go one of two ways: become popular and gain lots of supports + maintainers, die a slow death. After having actually used it for a few days it seems good to me. I'll continue to evaluate it as my daily browser.
0ldskool··on LibreWolf – A fork of Firefox, focused on privacy, security and freedom
I also end up reading pocket even though I hate it. I'm pretty sure the articles come from places like hackernews, reddit, and digg since I noticed overlap. Its basically an "aggregate aggregator". Android's Newsfeed that comes up my pixel phone is even more annoying because it seems to track everything I read using the same latest techniques they use for ads. If anyone on my intranet or a private intranet I have connected to likes to read something, they'll recommend that category of news to me. I hate it but I end up reading some of the news anyways since it does interest me...
0ldskool··on France ends gas heaters subsidies

France is only going to continue fund the Russian military for 5 more years. It is nice that they are speeding up the process away from fossil fuels, but 5 more years of funding a military invasion is 5 years too much.
I didn't realize that Russia invading Ukraine was caused by France. /s

Even if every single country in Europe was willing to kill their own citizens (removing cheap heating during cold seasons) by stopping using Gas today the Russian invasion of Ukraine would not stop.

0ldskool··on Ask HN: Anyone have stock option horror stories?
"crypto winters" should only be a term if there is no technological progress (similar to ai winter) but because of crypto exchanges they refer to investment $$$..... The value on crypto exchanges in just dumb, pointless, and manipulated.

Personally i always felt stock market and crypto exchanges are just mirror images of each other. Both are just scammy/scummy and its sad the the stock market isn't seen as such because its older and so ingrained into our society + economy. While there are legitimate uses for such a market (food and energy futures) they make up such a tiny tiny percentage of what its used for.

0ldskool··on New Capabilities for GPT-3: Edit and Insert

the U.S. military most likely having an interest in suppressing information to avoid someone else creating AI first.
someone else creating ai first? You make it sound like they are trying to create general ai skynet...

there are strong incentives for secrecy (trade secrets)
they do not have the right to call themselves "open" if they are focusing on secrecy. They are trying to paint themselves in a positive opensource light when really they are no different then any other corporate overlord hiding in the shadows. Open implies developed in the open, free for use + modification, and/or key details NOT being hidden from the public. Simply sharing details of things created or research done is no different than what researchers at any other ABC corporation/organization do.
0ldskool··on White Castle wants to install robot cooks in 100 new locations
Couldn't we have self-driving food trucks, each specializing in a specific food? People could have events and schedules a couple of food trucks to drive by while cooking food on the way. Fast food takes on a new meaning (fast vehicles cook+deliver food on demand).

No more need for fast food restaurants because they just can transformed into a fleet of trucks.

0ldskool··on Rich Like Me: How Assortative Mating Is Driving Income Inequality
Bring back harems where the well off have multiple spouses? I feel like the way inequality is going some places might end up like this or already are. Its usually religion that prevents this. Would sugar babies fall into this category (pay for a relationship and them using that money for school). Maybe a slightly more modern approach would be group relationships, each person specializing in a different life area/role? Anybody watch The Expanse?

The problem with such setups is that they are often rife with abuse in some form or another. The person who controls the money controls the group/harem. Isn't this how the world worked before women gained voting rights and ability to work in the labor force. Seems the best way to have an equal partner relationship is to make similar amounts of money with similar amounts of education.

0ldskool··on It happened to me: I accidentally attended a crypto bro dinner
Don't think thats useful in terms of currency exchange. In order for a crypto currency to be transferred it has to be committed to the public ledger. If you are cut off from the rest of the internet you can never have a successful transfer. I don't think people in Russia and Ukraine can wait years to convert cypto to local currency. What could happen is a fork of that cryptocurrency could be created in Russia with a completely different set of transactions. It could never rejoin the main chain otherwise that full transaction log would be lost.
0ldskool··on Bug 1758773: MITM in Russia
Hmm I had never heard of Certificate Transparency, looks like its a relatively newish tech added onto how SSL/TLS certs work. It seems only Google Chrome & Safari require SCT chains (not used by Firefox). Maybe I've never heard of it because I'm a Firefox user? You mentioned blockchain, does that mean there is a public blockchain for these Certs? I didn't see that mentioned anywhere but it does seem like blockchain features overlap with the desired features of "Certificate Transparency".

Large Companies like Epic don't by smaller companies like Bandcamp because they want the revenue stream that comes in from Bandcamp. They want the technology, engineers (acqi-hiring), data, or to kill possible competition. Keeping Bandcamp operating would take away from their main reasons from buying them. My personal guess is they want the technology + engineers for some new feature set they want. They won't want any bad press + they need time for planning/organizing before actually doing anything.

This is my guess of what will happen...

0ldskool··on Bug 1758773: MITM in Russia
Centralized trust is the mechanism used by the current version of the web. It is a broken system by design. Who says I can trust verisign or any other CA. Russia creating their own CA and asking it to be installed just emphasize how broken the current mechanisms are. Its not new, its always been broken.
0ldskool··on Russia Preparing for MitM
What about having more western stuff published onto IPFS? As long as there are one or two nodes in Russia that can get any content it can be easily spread.
0ldskool··on Stainless steel leaches nickel and chromium into foods during cooking (2013)
I exclusively use my cast iron for cooking eggs & bread. There is zero sticking. I also use grape-seed oil.

I make french toast, omelettes, over easy eggs, and toast. I have never had sticking that you are talking about...

Can you say which vehicle you drive? electric vehicles platforms are very different from each other
0ldskool··on Why is California wasting millions on hydrogen fuel pumps?
Everything you described would be a problem with hydrogen as well if not more so. You would need much much more insulation + special pipes for hydrogen usage. I don't know about slow ramp up times, I've never heard this. It takes mine about 10-30seconds for a 3 story house to start up. "So no more opening the windows at night for fresh air, then getting the house back up to temperature in the morning." I don't understand, how does hydrogen solve this problem? How is this not a problem for other sources?

Random note: I'm all for heat pumps & all for hydrogen. They just aren't for the same use cases. Heat pumps are good for heating+cooling of spaces. Hydrogen is good way to store electricity when care about energy-to-weight and/or need quick fuelling.

0ldskool··on Why is California wasting millions on hydrogen fuel pumps?
What safety risks exist that do not exist for other forms of fuel and energy?? Wouldn't marine be the perfect use of hydrogen? The only output is water. Energy storage of hydrogen is cheaper by weight then battery. If there are some solar panels and/or wind generators on part of the vessel then couldn't it technically stay adrift from shore forever (temporarily forget food for humans or degradation of the boat without maintenance).
