yea see I run my own business and I don't consider the gender or race of people applying (aka not racist/sexist)

> It's hard to even find women to interview, let alone hire.

from my perspective this is a subtle admission of active positive discrimination on your part, frankly if i was a woman maybe i would find it a little off putting that a bunch of old guys were real keen to get me under their supervision

if there is a movement to get men into nursing, it's not nearly as vocal (and why would there be?)

zzzzzzzza··on Ask HN: What is something that had the largest positive impact on your life?
i'm just sad I can't talk to him about anything more interesting than a marvel movie anymore

there's plenty of venues where you can find people advocating for those lifestyles, hn shouldn't be. the replies to this should be something more like "wrote my own emacs extension" or maybe like "took venture capital from some specific vc" or something...

this kind of ironic self hatred stuff is a big part of why leaving reddit is on my list...

zzzzzzzza··on Ask HN: Are You Religious?
raised independent bible church/southern baptist, probably 80% fundamentalist.

Now I guess you could consider me a deist, since I think if we are going to define God as some kind of infinite extension of some aspect of humanity then God would have to be a hyper turing machine then in my estimation.

Seems like such a thing could not exist in this universe, but I do actually choose to, loosely, believe something along that line exists, but we couldn't actually interact with or understand an entity like that... on like a mathematical level we couldn't.

So I explicitly disbelieve in a personal god of any kind. There could be a demiurge but I see no reason why it would have moral authority or anything, maybe it could torture you endlessly I guess XD.

zzzzzzzza··on What Happened to San Francisco, Really?
for any given dollar a middle class/poor household would be more likely to spend it on housing or additional square footage than a richer household
zzzzzzzza··on What Happened to San Francisco, Really?
my suspicion would be that more equitable wealth distribution would make housing even more expensive

in some scenarious even taxing third homes could ultimately reduce the supply of housing

a land value tax on the other hand...

wish this had a better title relating to "her 1925 doctoral thesis that stars were composed primarily of hydrogen and helium"
zzzzzzzza··on The Techno-Optimist Manifesto
"The biggest problem I have with this manifesto is that there's nothing actionable in it. What are we, the little people who aren't techno-elite billionaires, supposed to do now? Just wait for techno-Jesus to save us?"

maybe politics is a support vector machine and the division is the hyperplane XD
zzzzzzzza··on The Techno-Optimist Manifesto
i have some spiritual practice suggestions:

1. maintain and improve your emacs&nixos configurations,

2. create a personal database and add new capabilities to it (for example you could start by making a database to track github stars that could for instance store hashes of specific commits)

3. with your newfound data model and programmable/configurable environment, slowly integrate AI into your life

would different users have different schemas in their vcs db? would every pull request be a db migration XD?

zzzzzzzza··on PLJS – JavaScript Language Plugin for PostreSQL
the ddl that creates the views/tables/triggers that replace the "idempotent code" should also be idempotent so you should be able to roll it back without rolling back any data

actually i wrote a couple tables/stored procedures that (should probably mostly) do this for postgres after looking at some other patch management libraries by depesz and steve purcell a couple weeks ago

i am suggesting the two strategies might have similar trade offs/benefits though I am not familiar enough with attention mechanisms to say for sure.

it's a comparison/analogy?

zzzzzzzza··on GPT-4 API General Availability

zzzzzzzza··on Scaling Transformers to 1B Tokens
this sounds to me like a dollar cost averaging strategy - only buy in when the current price falls below an n-day moving average.

I doubt there is any risk adjusted alpha to the strategy - in practice it's my, newbie, understanding that the only thing that differentiates such strategies in the broader scheme of things is tax efficiency.

however I am also not a ML expert

zzzzzzzza··on The hardest part of building software is not coding, it's requirements
in an ideal world the code is the best, first, and foremost specification of the requirements.

you should be able to parse the abstract syntax tree and just look at top level definitions to get a good overview.

zzzzzzzza··on Introducing Superalignment
you don't need to believe in exponential growth per se, all you really need to believe is that humans aren't that capable relative to what could be in principle built - it's entirely possible logistic growth may be more than enough to get us very far past human ability once the right paradigm is discovered.
zzzzzzzza··on Why is there no government-built social media?
honestly not a bad idea either, a universal laptop program could probably almost recoup it's cost just be obsoleting a bunch of badly negotiated or thought out school hardware/ipad programs lol.

something modular like framework laptop would work well

zzzzzzzza··on U.S. Navy says Iran tried to seize two oil tankers, fired on one
Saudi buys a lot of US weaponry and sells like 70% of their oil to Asia. If anything they conspire with the United States against India/China to keep oil prices high in exchange for supporting US military industrial complex - or something along that line
zzzzzzzza··on Why is there no government-built social media?
I think the government should provide every citizen with their own cloud compute instance. universal basic compute allowance.
