zzzbra··on The Playacting over Masks Needed to End
Just because people aren't wearing them consistently doesn't mean more people aren't wearing them more as a result of the mandate. This has a net positive effect. Human nature accounted for.
zzzbra··on The Playacting over Masks Needed to End
So little substance to this argument. And he cherry picks various points?

> Medical experts admitted that, once the hyper-infectious Omicron became the dominant variant of COVID, cloth masks were perhaps better than nothing, but not by much.

Yes, "cloth" masks. Do not wear cloth masks. K95 and other medical grade masks that actually work as a barrier? Yea those are effective.

Rest of the argument seems to boil down to people not actually following the mandate consistently, which is not actually any argument against the effectiveness of mask wearing per se.

the reasoning in these pieces (by the same author?) always feels so specious. I wish I could understand the Musk idolatry.
zzzbra··on Light mode, Dark mode, and Gen-Z mode?
I remember the first time I realized I was no longer interested in “interesting” UI when I tried out Snapchat. Later I read a Gen Z user saying that the obtuseness of the interface was a plus. I wonder how much is a factor if biology and how much is a factor of having a million responsibilities like maintaining a home, working at a non-entry level in your job, etc., and just not having any interest in needlessly expending mental bandwidth on interacting with an app for yet another few precious moments of my increasingly limited time.

zzzbra··on Ride or Die: George Hotz against the institutions
I went to high school with George Hotz. He was nothing if not an iconoclast even back then, someone who refused to do anything he didn't really feel had any value. I remember one year we had a combined English and History class assignment that was meant to introduce us to the kind of research papers that academics in the humanities and social scientists write in higher ed. We were meant to read widely and conduct research over the course of many months and turn in a well cited paper between ten and fifteen pages in length. Instead, George decided to loudly dictate his entire paper in the engineering class we had the period before the assignment was due, basically just riffing on Harry Potter and LOTR, to the amusement of everyone in the computer lab. He then converted the entire Word doc into Zapf Dingbats and submitted it with a printed out decoder mapping the symbols to their English letter equivalent, like some puzzle on the back of a cereal box. Dunno what he received as a grade, though I do know the assignment counted for a considerable piece of our overall grade for both those subjects that semester.
zzzbra··on Over-reliance on CGI in movies
while I am 100% in the "more practical effects please" camp, I would also wager that criticism of the state of CGI in films today is in large part a matter of survivorship bias: we are only noticing the bad CGI, and not appreciating just how much more happens to be CGI. Case in point, no one has probably seen even half as many real animals in a film in the past ten years as we think we have.
zzzbra··on Fight Club author praises Chinese cut of film: ‘Super wonderful ’
I think we need some air quotes around "praises" in the title here...
zzzbra··on Brain surgeon: There's no point wearing bicycle helmets (2014)
I would have died if I weren't wearing a helmet a couple years back. The conjecture on the part of this brain surgeon about how people _would_ act is a flimsy supposition.
zzzbra··on Spotify sides with Joe Rogan, removes Neil Young’s music
I think they are just articulating NY's actual reasoning.
zzzbra··on I was deceived about Covid vaccine safety
ranks pretty high in the realm of psychosomatic symptoms. I had an anxiety disorder that primarily manifested itself that way in my mid-20s. went away when I recognized it as such and took on a meditation practice for handling my panic attacks.
zzzbra··on Does News About Omicron Make You More Likely to Get a Covid-19 Vaccine?
I don’t understand people who would have held out to this point to begin with. what motivates vaccine hesitancy in 2022?
zzzbra··on Are soundtracked books a stunt or the future of ebooks?
Stunt.
zzzbra··on Buy Things, Not Experiences
I think the author here is either being willfully obstinate, or they just don't get it. Paying expensive rents is patently a service, rather than something you own. And a lot of these experiences don't have to be expensive. Traveling is something that can be done on the cheap, and I would guess that many folks who celebrate privileging experiences over things aren't any more likely to want their experiences to be examples of "conspicuous consumption," thought of course enough do and Instagram is rife with that sort of shallow consumption. But that's not at all what the ethos is about. When the author shifts their definition of things to be "tools" or "investments" (notably in scarce resources), the comparison becomes even less honest. If those are the sorts of things the minimalists are telling us to forego, then at least acknowledge that a popular "experience" folks are investing in is taking classes, in other words, skills.
zzzbra··on Rhodes scholar who claimed she was poor loses place at Oxford
A sign of the times it seems. This is what happens when so much of how one constructs oneself is as a mere product of circumstance. We are of course, but something in the culture is weirdly centering it.
zzzbra··on Colors in movies and TV: What happened to them?
counterpoint: B&W was all we had for almost half a century and many of the greatest works of (B&W) cinema came out after that -- notably Film Noir. Maybe B&W is good, and muting color in "color" movies is a recognition of that fact.

I've been wondering how DHH intends to re-enter the tech industry in his adjunct role as a thought leader. This is a nice piece -- and clever product announcement too.
zzzbra··on New Year, New CEO
wonder what Moxie will get up to next, given his web3 skepticism and the state of the tech industry today.
zzzbra··on New Year, New CEO
I can't imagine they intend to sell Signal but then when I say "they" it's always been a stand in for Marlinspike. We can only hope he's correct in terms of the team he's built continuing the mission that had formerly been guided by his judgment.

zzzbra··on I'm getting tired of modern meme culture
I dunno. I think OP may be right about changes in meme culture, but I don’t think OP is being anything but nostalgic in any of the examples given. memes are more sophisticated insofar as they’re more self aware and self referential but they’re not necessarily meaner or more degenerate. YTMND anyone?
