zyberzero··on Fairphone is now officially available in the United States
Ah, that makes sense, thanks! I tried that way back when Windows phone was a thing (using my phone as a desktop), I even had a small dock for my Lumia 925. It worked well enough for presentations and RDPing into my workstation.

How often do you connect stuff to your phone, and for what purposes? I genuinely wonder!

I can't remember the last time I connected my phone to my computer for other purposes than charging the phone, but that's me and we all use our stuff different ways

zyberzero··on Immich 3.0
Yes, at least for a year. There is a ”external library” feature, I think that does what you want.
zyberzero··on You can run a DNS server (2025)
I selfhost DNS as well, but I just use plain old bind zone files and it works well enough across a bunch of domains (and RFC2136 for my dynamic IP at home) that I haven't bothered to look into database stored records. I just need to remember the pesky serial number so that the changes get properly replicated :)
zyberzero··on My astrophotography in the movie Project Hail Mary
Not the parent, but I've seen the movie and read the book. I think there are a few gaps in the movie that's explained by the book, but there are some artistic freedom as well between the book and the film.

I would recommend reading the book first at least.

But a copy of production data in the test environment isn't production data... It's test data! :)
zyberzero··on Root System Drawings
It says cm, so centimeters (1/100 meter) - slightly less than 0.4 inches
zyberzero··on Revisiting Image Maps
Really? I'd say image maps was the name I haven't heard in a long time... As in I read a couple of paragraphs before it dawned on me that it was _that_ type of image maps that post was about - I first thought it was something regarding rasterized maps (like OpenStreetMap or something)
zyberzero··on The Alexa feature "do not send voice recordings" you enabled no longer available
Yes, there is functionality to create groups in music assistant. You can even create groups between different types of sinks (so you can combine say Chromecasts together with home assistants media player together with airplay). However, I have not played around with that too much so I don’t know how well the players will sync with each other.

Timers works fine.

Music - yes, albeit a bit finicky to set up.

There's an addon called Music Assistant that controls the music, you can connect it to your provider of choice (local files, Spotify, etc), and you can let it connect to several types of sinks.

OOB the HA only knows a few commands (pause, next, etc) but there are some community driven effort to improve the support, such as "Play the album Dark side of the moon". [0].

We do have credit scoring, but I don’t think it is in the same sense as in the US though. If you look at ”your” UC (for example using the app Kreddy) you will get a credit score back.

I noticed, but everything is fine on https://portal.office.com/servicestatus

zyberzero··on Spotify's Beta Used 'Pirate' MP3 Files, Some from Pirate Bay (2017)
I was using Spotify Beta way back when, and they absolutely had songs named like that as well. I specifically remember one of Pink Floyd's albums (pretty sure is was a copy of the wall) as such.
zyberzero··on My washing machine refreshed my thinking on software estimation
Same. My (fairly modern, ~3 yo?) Husqvarna only show lies; it can show seven minutes left for ~30 minutes and then go straight to 0.
zyberzero··on Xiaomi Home Integration for Home Assistant
> What I'm missing out on is an (Android) app, and I think that this would be a good reason to think about moving over to HA.

There is! The Home assistant companion - it brings you a lot of functionality in terms of location, notifications, sensors and what not into the HA world.

zyberzero··on Why is the Oral-B iOS app almost 300 MB? And why is Colgate's app even bigger..?
The protocol has already been reverse engineered. I’m using Home Assistant with bluetooth and it picks up one of my neighbour’s Oral-B toothbrush…
zyberzero··on Alexa is in millions of households and Amazon is losing billions
Fun fact: my local store uses different units for the comparisons. Not that you can choose from that many different units, but for example brand A corn flakes comparison price is price/serving while brand B corn flakes is compared by price/kg. Sure, the serving is based on weight but I still need to do some math to figure out which one is cheaper :)

This is one of the biggest food chains in Sweden.

zyberzero··on Affinity's Adobe-rivaling creative suite is now free for six months
I have been looking for Affinity Photo for a while - but can someone recommend a good alternative to lightroom? Perhaps something that integrate with Affinity reasonable well?

For mac. Plus points for linux support. Even more plus points if it can easily share the library between different devices.

zyberzero··on Convert an existing wired doorbell into a smart doorbell using ESPHome
I did something similar, but as I didn’t have access to mains in an easy way (read: close enough to the doorbell) to power the ESP I built a small PSU that took the very unregulated 8VAC from the doorbell transformer into 5VDC (using a rectifier, LM7805 for regulation and some capacitors to smooth everything out). Everything was small enough so I could hide it in the actual doorbell as well!
zyberzero··on A Beginner's Guide to the ESP8266 (2017)
This is amazing! Thanks for the tip. My ESP32 dev board with a display is in the hands of Fedex right now, so this is perfect timing :)

My favourite game, all categories. Endless hours of gameplay, and you can play it on almost anything!
zyberzero··on Ransomware attack affecting Tietoevry's services to some customers in Sweden
Yeah, and parts of Vellinge Kommun as well. Apparently a lot of their day-to-day-systems are affected [0].

Also, a HR system called primula is affected. It is mostly used by universities from what I can gather.

zyberzero··on Ransomware attack affecting Tietoevry's services to some customers in Sweden
Yeah. From what I know at least Filmstaden (Swedens biggest cinema chain, owned by AMC) can’t sell a thing right now. No tickets can be sold at all, and no snacks can be sold at the cinema either :(

Rusta is another affected store chain. I guess there is a lot more affected customers unknown to the public right now

zyberzero··on Juniper Networks to Combine with HPE
My 4000N from october -98 is still running strong. It only has around 140K impressions so far, so I guess I’ll die before the printer :)

zyberzero··on Removal of MyQ Integration
It makes me so sad to see more companies actively disrupting their own customers usage of the products the customer has bought. Not long ago (not even a month) the Mazda integration was removed due to Mazdas hostility towards their customers.

I'm not in the market for a garage opener in the foreseeable future, but it ain't gonna be one from Chanderlain Group.

zyberzero··on Home Assistant 2023.11
You can do most of the setup right from the UI nowadays. I rarely resort to yaml-files, and if I do it is because the integration is old (and probably not that many that uses it - I can think of two integrations on top of my head that I needed to configure with yaml, traccar for tracking my bike and my local public transport organization) or it's something really special special (I have a thing that calculates the block of the cheapest two hours every day to schedule my dish washer, that was tricky to do OOB in the UI).

Otherwise it's pretty straight forward nowadays!

zyberzero··on ZFS for Dummies
I bought a cheap HP Microserver with four 4 TB spinning disks that I placed at a relatives house ~1000 km from where I live. I do nightly replication to the off-site location, with an account on the receiving end that only has enough permissions to create snapshots and receive data, so even if that ssh key somehow got out in the wild things could not be deleted from the remote store. I hope :)

Clarification: Remote end also uses ZFS, so I can use cheap replication with encryption
