zweifuss··on Why modern software is slow
Having a list of all audio recordings always shown on the right pane is kinda an optimization (VoiceRecorder.exe). The usefulness is limited, because VoiceRecorder can't edit them, only play back and set markings.
zweifuss··on Risk Everything (2007)
This story was told in 2007. A used entry level marine GPS was in the $700 range at that time. Current map was $200 extra. In the boondocks there often isn't much price difference between used and new, so the price could have been in the $1000s also.

A used long-range radio could be cheaper, but not that much.

Both could easily be a year's earnings.

Satellite Phone was in the $10000s.

zweifuss··on Nobody wants to teach anymore
We have tried automation. B.F. Skinner (programmed learning) was neither the the first nor the last.

More recently researches found that the completion rate of most of the MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses) was below 13%.

It doesn't work for most students beyond what good teachers are doing already.

zweifuss··on Nobody wants to teach anymore
The "Rockstar Professors" I know were overhyped.

Some of my best teachers had only a so-so reputation, but were hard workers, curious, and honest and expected as much from their pupils.

zweifuss··on Nobody wants to teach anymore
Learning is social. Very close to 100%.

That is why the Nuremberg funnel was never really invented. Technology as a teacher substitute has never proven itself in practice (i.e. outside of laboratory environments). There are a few students that are exceptionally driven, but even they learn socially.

That we have tried to get better schools by economy of scale and standardized testing is reason for some of the problems and therefore cannot be solved with more of the same.

* Social learning is more enjoyable and motivating. We learn from people, with people and because of people.

* Interaction with others gives meaning to ideas. Ideas mean little without a social context. This has been proven again and again.

* Discussing ideas increases understanding and retention of those ideas.

zweifuss··on Edible insects role in transmission of parasitic diseases to humans (2019)
Prion transmitted diseases similar to Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease seem to be not that rare in nature. You need to cook the brains extremely well and long to be on the safe side.

Thankfully BSE (Mad Cow Disease) was not as transmissible as feared.

zweifuss··on Show HN: I made a web-based notepad with a built in unit calculator
400 inch^2 -> 400 inches² 10 km^2 -> 10 km²

... works for me.

zweifuss··on Ask HN: Why don't web browsers discourage words that not everyone will know?
You can install the Grammarly addon to do that, if you want. It shouldn't be a core browser feature.
zweifuss··on Excel is pretty dang cool
Yes, this happened in Excel 5/95. The first version with VBA in addition to Excel 4.0-Macros. By the way, Excel 4.0-Macros were also localized. The backlash was nearly immediate because localized xls-files were not always interchangeable. Support for localized VBA was removed in Excel 97.
zweifuss··on Excel is pretty dang cool
Namend cells and ranges was one of the major features of Microsoft Multiplan (1982). See p. 60 in [1].

MS Excel 2.0 (1987) could do the same, but entering names for ranges was not as easy as in Multiplan. Look in the menu for Formula | Names…

zweifuss··on Having, a less understood SQL clause
Cube gets all possible combinations of grouping sets. It´s like showing all subtotals in a pivot table. That´s different than just grouping on the lowest level without totals.
zweifuss··on Having, a less understood SQL clause
Yes, PostgreSQL (9 and later), SQL Server (2008 and later), Oracle, SQL Anywhere and DB2 support grouping sets. All had it for longer than a decade.

Some also support the MySQL/MariaDB with rollup syntax introduced in 2018.

zweifuss··on Solein – Protein out of thin air
Conversion efficiency from solar radiation to dry matter is estimated for soy beans at 2.1%. Solar Foods claims 10 times more energy-efficient per hectare than photosynthesis with soy production. If you assume 22% efficient solar panels and a longer growing season, because solar panels are less temperature and water dependent than plants, this might just work out.
zweifuss··on George Orwell’s 1940 Review of Mein Kampf
As a small child in Essen, my mother lived through the bombing nights of 44/45 and the also harsh post-war period. The trauma that people close to her can suddenly disappear (e.g. suicide, abandonment, sometimes result of canibalism) still shapes her behavior today.
zweifuss··on Photos Always Pointing at the Pointer (2012)
Me too.
zweifuss··on Ask HN: GPT-3 reveals my full name – can I do anything?
In principle, the Internet should support a "digital eraser" for personal information. But since that's illusory, I've always been against requiring clear names in forums and social media. Given the dangerous nature of social media, I would also be in favor of a minimum age of, say, 18.
zweifuss··on 7-zip 22.00 – APFS, Posix TAR, high precision timestamps
Yes. It's mostly LGPL: https://www.7-zip.org/license.txt Compiling it yourself used to be difficult. Should be better now.
zweifuss··on Logitech MX Mechanical Keyboard
What I don't like about the MX keyboards is that they don't have an IBM compatibility mode. For example, the pause key is Start+Fn+B. So the familiar break combination in Visual Studio CTRL+Pause is CTRL+Start+Fn+B. The Fn key is on the left, so it requires two-handed operation. Some key combinations can not be reached at all, not even as a macro. The macro facility (progammable key) is near useless anyway.
zweifuss··on Majority in Japan backs nuclear power for first time since Fukushima
If I remember correctly the tested uranyl ion collectors were not very specific and they concentrated other radioactive heavy elements to a dangerous degree for the lifeforms flowing through.
zweifuss··on Germany bans Russian broadcaster RT’s German-language channel
RT dosen't have a valid permit. They should have asked for one in Germany: https://apnews.com/article/business-europe-russia-media-germ...
zweifuss··on Groups never admit failure
> Meanwhile the F35 is an overpriced hangar queen that should never have been built (the F22 is a solid stealth plane).

From what I read, the F-22 is the hangar queen. F-35 can do several supersonic missions per day and is not afraid of rain. It is overpriced, though.

zweifuss··on Hubris – A small operating system for deeply-embedded computer systems
I haven't looked at Oxide in depth. Hubris seems to be about reducing the Attack Surface of a server by

* decreasing the active codebase by at least three orders of magnitude

* using no C-Code (Rust only?)

* most code is kernel independent and not privileged (e.g. drivers, task management, crash recovery)

Also: Administration is mostly done by rebooting components.

zweifuss··on Duff’s Device in 2021
The line

  Clang 12.0 -O3 1.2955e-1 1.2553e-4 –3.1%
seems wrong to me. Is there a mistake?
zweifuss··on Individuals Matter
1x is defined as the least productive engineer in a team. But I know what you mean. Sometimes a team can be more productive with fewer people.
zweifuss··on One Man’s Quest to Preserve the World’s Smallest Oil Refiner

zweifuss··on Submarine cable map rendered onto a globe
I'm suprised how well connected Guam is. Are there reasons?
zweifuss··on Do not leave XPS laptop in any sleep/hibernate/standby mode when placed in a bag
On my MateBook 13 (2020) the Fn and Shift Lock lights are turned on, while the laptop is still powerd on, but not under OS control anymore: Sleep takes 6 seconds down and 2 seconds up. Hibernation is 9 seconds down and 20isch seconds up. Shutdown is 20isch down and Boot is 22isch to desktop (fastboot=off).
