zura··on Bolt: A low-level key/value database for Go
Hey Ben, what (refs/books/lectures) would you recommend for someone who is interested to learn theory behind these kind of DBs and implement it from scratch?
zura··on How common is it to work remotely as a programmer?
Thanks, but under "systems" I meant systems programming, not sysadmin stuff. At the moment I'm working on a great gig, I just shared my experience of finding good remote gigs in general.

Also, one thing to remember - jobs are not constant entities, you could have find them in this month but half of them would disappear for next month... i.e. timing matters.

In my experience, finding remote jobs for popular techs are quite easy (mobile apps dev, web dev). But it is a challenge to find some good remote job for non-web, e.g. C++/systems/desktop dev.

I wander how many of them accept overseas (Europe) candidates...
zura··on Ask HN: "Math is hard!" - The limits of individiual mathematical ability
Yes, personal experience and watching other people around me as well. Mostly, hard is boring, i.e. when you don't have enough interest to pursue it. As for math - it is not just about being good, but also the process itself - of becoming good, i.e. learning. When this process seems interesting and fun, I doubt someone will say it is hard.

E.g. for many people, literature classes or some other humanities stuff is hard.

zura··on Ask HN: "Math is hard!" - The limits of individiual mathematical ability
It is not. Nothing is hard if you are interested i.e. have fun out of it. It is about personal preferences, what you enjoy and what you don't. That's it.
zura··on Metaprogramming with Modern C++: The Haskell Metaphor
I've first encountered these techniques in Alexandrescu's Modern C++ Design. The most interesting for me was how one arrives to such solutions [in C++]. Later, I read SICP (which was the first time I touched FP) and everything got much more sense...
zura··on Idea Sunday – have an idea you want to see executed?
Google Play store publishing service from a credible HN user. Allowing devs from unsupported countries to sell apps.
zura··on Ask HN: How much recurring income do you generate and from what?
Thank you for the detailed answer. Handling copyrights and exclusiveness sounds bad to me... Did you try first to sell your videos independently?
zura··on Ask HN: How much recurring income do you generate and from what?
Interesting, how is pricing decided?
zura··on Quicksort in 3 lines of shell
I meant that the canonical quicksort algorithm which Hoare came up uses in-place partitioning. Probably you can still call "quicksort" to these nice snippets (be it in Prolog, Erlang or Haskell), but mentioning the fact about the deviation from the canonical implementation could be useful for readers.
zura··on Quicksort in 3 lines of shell
Maybe we should all learn to always prepend "Pseudo" to these "quicksorts"?
zura··on Big things to expect from Emacs 25
One question for long time Emacs users - do you notice any significant changes compared to e.g. 10 or 20 years ago versions of Emacs? Same question applies to vim users I believe...

Like, for instance, there are huge advancements from MSVC 97 to MSVC 2013...

zura··on Interactive map shows where native and new Berliners live
Hm, is it normal in Berlin to live at some place for many years and still renting the apartment? Instead of buying/owning it...

zura··on Ask HN: Devs, what career would you have chosen before the computers existed?
I wanted to underline that Computer Science is not about computers... I think even if computers didn't exist this branch of mathematics still would evolve.

But to follow the original intent of the poster - other professions I'd be interested: Pure mathematics, Music, Chemistry and Mechanical Engineering.

zura··on Ask HN: Devs, what career would you have chosen before the computers existed?
Computer Science
zura··on Orbital Sciences Antares rocket explodes after liftoff
Glad to hear it was unmanned!
zura··on Meteor hits 1.0
If only this was built in Dart... or at least TypeScript.
zura··on Ask HN: Workarounds for selling apps from unsupported countries?
It is frustrating that most people here don't care about this...
zura··on Ask HN: CoffeeScript or ClojureScript for writing a game in JS?
Why not Dart? or at least TypeScript?
zura··on I Hate Puzzles: Am I Still a Programmer? (2011)
> I write them because I like creating things, and it's a >lot easier to create things with programs than with a machine shop.

Exactly. This is one of the main reasons for me as well - creating things without buying or manufacturing physical materials.

zura··on Music Theory for Musicians and Normal People
I'm surprised nobody mentioned that terrible font... Any chance you could fix it?
zura··on C++ unified call syntax: x.f(y) vs. f(x,y) [pdf]
Well, to follow your line - virtual functions can also be implemented with some function pointer stuff within C. We're not discussing implementing various C++ stuff in C, we're talking about C++ itself.
zura··on C++ unified call syntax: x.f(y) vs. f(x,y) [pdf]
Having access to private data (implementation details) is another reason to have a member function.

Unless you're a fan of `friend` keyword ;)

zura··on C++ unified call syntax: x.f(y) vs. f(x,y) [pdf]
Well, the key thing is the `reason` here. In C++ we use RAII, so this is the reason to have a member constructor/destructor functions instead of non-member create_something(...)/destroy_something(...) (aka C style).

But, for instance, `sort` is a good candidate to have outside of a class - and it actually is a global function - std::sort.

zura··on C++ unified call syntax: x.f(y) vs. f(x,y) [pdf]
I'd also prefer "intersect(s1, s2)" if C++ had multimethods...

But to follow the line of Bjarne's advice (I've also heard same from Stepanov): One should prefer non-member functions. i.e. there must be some real reason for some function to become a member of a class.

zura··on Ask HN: My app makes around $30,000 per year. Would anyone like to buy it?
Drop me an email please (in profile), with App Annie statistics if possible.

Any thoughts why iOS version didn't take off?

zura··on Show HN: Paymo 3 – Project management, time tracking and invoicing
Nice project!

How is it going? Any jumps in user signups count after posting on HN?
